CMES was honored to host a considerable number of outstanding lectures this year by eminent scholars from throughout the U.S. as well as from the Middle East and Europe. I mention only a few highlights below. Our new Middle Eastern Literatures initiative was advanced by several events: campus visits by Arab novelists Mai Nakib (Kuwait), Ahmed Khaled Towfik (Egypt), and Ali Bader (Iraq); academic lectures by a range of literary scholars including Hannan Hever (Yale) on Zionist literature and Sheida Dayani (NYU) on contemporary Persian theater; and a highly successful seminar on intersections between Arabic and Turkish literatures held at Bilgi University in Istanbul, which included our own Professor Cemal Kafadar, several of our graduate students, and myself. In early April, CMES along with two Harvard Iranian student groups hosted the first Harvard Iranian Gala, which featured a lecture by Professor Abbas Milani of Stanford University and was attended by over one hundred guests from the broader Boston Iranian community. Also in April, CMES co-sponsored an international multilingual conference on The Thousand and One Nights with INALCO, Paris. Our new Arabian Peninsula Studies Lecture Series was inaugurated with a lecture by Professor David Commins of Dickinson College, and we are happy to report that this series will continue in both the fall and spring semesters of next year thanks to the generous support of CMES alumni. -

For Ummi and Abbi: I love you both. ABSTRACT: This thesis uses the case study of the Arab-Islamic Fulla doll to examine the relationships among globalization, consumption and cultural identities. Beginning with the question of how cultural products like the Fulla doll come to exist, I argue that the Fulla doll serves as an example of the process of creolization whereby non-Western peoples mobilize local customs and beliefs to transform globally-distributted consumer goods, thus re-contextualizing and assigning new meanings to these goods. Through an analysis of thirteen animated Fulla doll advertisements, I argue that the Barbie doll’s ethnic, religious and gendered identity has been re-contextualized to transform her into an Arab-Muslim woman, the Fulla doll. -

Revisiting the Etymology of Zanni
REVISITING THE ETYMOLOGY OF ZANNI Anna Moro It has long been maintained that the etymology of zani, zanni – the servant or buffoon of the commedia dell’arte – is a northern Italian variant of the proper noun Giovanni, or its shortened form, Gianni. In Tommaseo and Bellini’s Dizionario della lingua italiana , published in Turin between 1865 and 1879, it is stated that the term is “voce bergamasca, accorciata dall’intero nome Giovanni, che rappresenta un Servo semplice e goffo bergamasco.” 1 Tommaseo and Bellini’s explanation of the origin of the term is basically what is found in modern etymological dictionaries, such as Battisti and Alessio’s Dizionario etimologico italiano (DEI) and Cortelazzo and Zolli’s Dizionario etimologico della lingua italiana (DELI). The earliest attestation of the term appears to be the 15th century, according to Battisti and Alessio, but a precise reference is not given. 16th century attestations of zani / zanni corresponding to the servant character of the commedia dell’arte , of course, abound. There is no doubt that the term zani was widely used in the 16th century in Italy to designate the servant character of the commedia dell’arte ; and it is during the 16th century that the term spread outside of Italy: it is found in French, for example, as zani from 1550, and in English, as zany , later in the century (Migliorini 1983: 426). In the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) , the noun zany (with various spellings), which preceded the use of term as 1 Cited in M. Cortelazzo and P.
