The following chapters appeared in the pages of " The Scottish Chronicle " in 1915 and 1916, and it is owing to the courtesy of the Proprietor and Editor that they are now republished in book form. Their original publication in the pages of a Church newspaper will explain something of the lines on which the book is fashioned. The articles were written to explain and to describe the origin and de\elopment of the Armorial Bearings of the ancient Dioceses of Scotland. These Coats of arms are, and have been more or less con- tinuously, used by the Scottish Episcopal Church since they came into use in the middle of the 17th century, though whether the disestablished Church has a right to their use or not is a vexed question. Fox-Davies holds that the Church of Ireland and the Episcopal Chuich in Scotland lost their diocesan Coats of Arms on disestablishment, and that the Welsh Church will suffer the same loss when the Disestablishment Act comes into operation ( Public Arms). -

The Holy See MESSAGE OF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO CARDINAL WINNING ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF ST NINIAN IN SCOTLAND To my Venerable Brother Cardinal Thomas Winning Archbishop of Glasgow As the Church in Scotland returns in memory to its origins and celebrates the 1600th anniversary of the arrival of St Ninian in Galloway in 397 A.D., I send you cordial greetings in the Lord and ask you to convey to your brother Bishops and to the clergy, religious and lay faithful the assurance of my prayerful participation in this joyous commemoration. The life and apostolate of St Ninian are traditionally considered as marking the introduction of Christianity into your country. This then is a time for all Scottish Christians to give thanks to our heavenly Father who, through his chosen instruments, especially Ninian, Mungo and Columba, caused to shine in your hearts "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ" (cf. 2 Cor 4:6). A Briton by birth, Ninian’s education was essentially Roman and after his ordination as a Bishop, probably in Rome, he returned to Scotland as its first missionary. His foundation of Candida Casa in Galloway in south-west Scotland, later to be known as Whithorn, was the beginning of a vital centre of monastic spiritual life and evangelizing activity which, under Ninian’s inspiration, spread the Gospel message northwards and eastwards over much of the country, as witnessed to in so many place-names and local traditions which refer to him. Ninian’s mission to Scotland should be seen as a part of the wider picture of the great missionary enterprises which brought Christianity to every corner of Europe during the first millennium. -

'T'HE long period of four hundred and twenty years of our -*- ecclesiastical history of which I have to give an account is marked by the rise and growth of so many institutions, and the occurrence of so many important events, as to preclude an exhaustive treatment of it in the limited space at my disposal. All that I can here attempt is to sketch in outline the recon- struction of the Scottish Church in the twelfth century after the pattern then prevailing throughout Western Christendom, and the further development of this system onwards to the time when, through internal corruption, it had lost its energy and usefulness, and only awaited the shock by which it was to fee overthrown. Students of the history of this period enjoy one signal advantage, which is denied to explorers of the previous ages. Of the four centuries extending from the days of Cumin and Adamnan, who wrote Lives of St Columba, to the death of Malcolm Canmore, we possess scarcely any of those native : 66 Sf Giles' Lectures. contemporary chronicles in which England and Ireland are so rich ; and the inquirer must have recourse to the meagre and too often misleading information supplied by foreign annalists, or by legends and traditions which were not committed to writing till many centuries after the death of those to whom they refer. But when we reach the twelfth century we enter upon a new era. -

A Forgotten Aberdeenshire Monastery
A FORGOTTEN ABERDEENSHIRE MONASTERY W. DOUGLAS SIMPSON, M,A. PRINTED AT THE ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY PRESS 1922 'o A Forgotten Aberdeenshire Monastery. UR Celtic Christian sites in Aberdeenshire have usually been ascribed to St. Columba and his Scotic disciples from lona, but recent research has shown that most if not all of them belong to a different source and may claim a higher antiquity. The whole question of the introduction of Christi- anity into Pictland has recently been exposed to searching investigation by the Rev. Archibald B. Scott, minister of Kildonan in Sutherland. Mr. Scott, in his book on the " Pictish Nation," and in his smaller work on "St. Ninian," ^ has shown that much of the credit commonly awarded to Columba and the Scottish School of lona, is really due to Ninian and his British missionaries from Strathclyde, who were actively spreading the Gospel in Aberdeen- shire a full century and a half before Columba set foot on the pebbly beach of lona. Ultimately, with the political ascendancy of the Scots over the Picts, the Scottish or Columban church absorbed its pre- decessor. While the Columban Church conformed early to Rome, the remnants of the native Pictish Church, founded from Strathclyde, con- tinued dissidents to the last as the Culdees of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Hence all through the later Middle Ages the Roman Church writers systematically garbled the records of Celtic Christianity, ascribing to Columba and the lona brethren much of the work which was in fact performed by Ninian and Kentigern and their disciples. Thus, to take one instance only, the famous Monastery at Deer in Buchan was believed in medieval times to have been founded by Columba, whereas in reality it was founded, a full genera- tion before Columba even landed in Scotland, by one of Ninian's disciples, Colm, who also established churches at Oyne, Daviot, Birse, and Belhelvie, at each of which places he was afterwards confused or equated with Columba. -

Richard III and St Ninian Sandra Pendlington
Richard III and St Ninian Sandra Pendlington Thomas Turpie, one of the leading Scottish historians of the early Scottish saints, describes Richard, duke of Gloucester, as ‘the most high profile patron’ of the cult of St Ninian in the fifteenth century1. Who was St Ninian2 and why did Richard III choose him as his patron saint? This article explores these questions and also includes information about a new collaboration between the Whithorn Trust, in Galloway Scotland, and the Scottish Branch of the Richard III Society. St Ninian and Whithorn The earliest written records about St Ninian were produced in the eighth century. They included a long poem, probably written at Whithorn, called Miracula Nyniae Episcopi3, which tells the stories of the miracles performed by the saint, and the account by the Venerable Bede of Bishop Nynia, who had built a famous church at Whithorn and was renowned for his holy life and healing miracles4. Both are believed to be based on an earlier lost ‘Life’ of St Ninian written at Whithorn. Tradition says that St Ninian originally came from south‐west Scotland and went to Rome, where he was made a bishop. He arrived in Galloway in the late fourth century and established Candida Casa – the ‘shining white shack’ – from which the name Whithorn is derived. The exact location of Candida Casa is not known5. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of an early Christian Church at Whithorn, as well as a substantial Christian secular community. By tradition, Bishop Ninian went out to preach to the Picts, who lived in the area south of the Antonine Wall between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth. -

The Living Tradition of Saints in the British Isles 4 Dumfries and Galloway Community of St Bega, St Mungo and St Herbert Fr John Musther, 16 Greta Villas, KESWICK, Cumbria CA12 5LJ www.orthodoxcumbria.org St Ninian's Cave 2 One of my favourite 'holy' places is the cave of St Ninian on the east side of the Whithorn peninsula in Galloway. To get to it one has to get out of the car at Physgill and walk. The path takes us down a small wooded glen before we arrive at the stony beach and the waves of the sea. Turning right and looking up a little we see the cave at the end of the beach. We still have a hard ten minute walk on the shingle before we get there. But to sit in it, all alone, ah, what a pleasure! People are, naturally, wary of romantic imagination. But a disciplined use of the imagination is permissible. The peace and quiet at this cave encourages indulgence. Was St Ninian ever here? We do not know. But after a little while of prayer we feel he is here. On the walls of the cave are early crosses picked into the stone. A number of ancient cross slabs were found here, now in the museum in Whithorn. The cave has brought people here from early times. As we look from the cave along the beach across the bay we can see why. INTRODUCTION This project was inspired by the work of Deacon John Woodside and his book ‘Together in Christ: Following the Northern Saints’. A small book group, based at St Anne’s RC church in Thurso, Caithness, read this book and were surprised at the number of saints with connections to Caithness. A fairly light-hearted comment about the desirability of bringing these saints to the attention of modern Caithnesians developed a life of its own and grew into a work that we think has answered Deacon Woodside’s own wish, expressed in the final paragraph of his introduction ‘It is hoped that this short book will inspire you to do some saint researching of your own and discover the Christian genes that inform the history of several peoples who would eventually unite to become the Scottish Nation.’1 In addition to the general aim of making the early Christian history of Caithness more widely appreciated, we added other aims. Firstly, we are keen to remind the various Christian denominations of our common heritage in the hope of furthering the already positive ecumenical spirit in Caithness and the Highlands in general. Another aim that was adopted early on was to persuade tourists to spend some time in the county. We need to give them a reason to pause and explore Caithness rather than treating it as a place to go through on the way to somewhere else. Our first task was to find a structure through which to present our material. The most cursory of initial researches had shown that there was an embarrassment of material on our subject.
