Bohdan Hawrylyshyn (Богдан Гаврилишин), October 19, 1926 – October 24, 2016, Canadian, Swiss and Ukrainian economist, thinker, benefactor and advisor to the governments and large companies worldwide. He was a full member of the Club of Rome, a founder of the European Management Forum in Davos (now World Economic Forum). Antares* – research project of the non-military components of new generation wars, the wars of the 21st century, implemented by the Center for Global Studies “Strategy XXI”. The project was launched in 2014 by the research “Hybrid war in Eastern Europe. Non-military dimension. Energy component”. In 2015, a report was prepared with consequent publication of the brochure «Energy component of new generation warfare». In 2016, “Putin’s Hybression. Non-military aspects of new generation wars” brochure was published. The forerunner of this research was the Center’s project “Energy resources and their delivery infrastructure: the potential for inappropriate operation in Europe”, realized in 2010 with support of the NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine. The project proposes an energy-centered approach to explaining the phenomenon of war, its energy forms. Also, research on the use of energy resources and energy infrastructure as a tool for keeping the hidden warfare, was carried out. The Antares project gives the chance to play a puzzle of new generation war phenomenon of Russia’s hybrid type aggression against Ukraine and Russia’s multi- frontal crypto war against the West.     Romanian Folk Magic: Bewitching Ideology Daniel Bird Potions swirling in cauldrons, midnight spells, curses and hidden covens: the witch is a fgure entrenched in our myth and memory. It is, however, a little-known fact that today many witches still reign supreme over parts of modern Europe, holding seats of power in lavish abodes. These supernatural practitioners have refused to be relegated to history and instead have transmogrifed their talents to ft into a capitalist arena where magic fourishes and their arts embed them- selves in an industry of their own. Associated most frequently in European memory with Satanic worship, witchcraft has held a curious grip on the human psyche. The archetype has surfaced world- wide in many cultural iterations, having even received a post-mortem resurgence and transformation in Western pop-culture flm and television. Witches in this medium have been portrayed equally as relatable adolescents and as the more traditionally horrifying hags of the thriller genre, showing the fgure of the witch to be a durable and fexible one. Much the same can be said of witchcraft in the country of Romania, where the practice and sociocultural perceptions of witch- craft have evolved, expired and been subsequently revived in the last century. To properly articulate the historical trajectory of Romanian witchcraft, I begin by describing its birthplace in the agrarian countryside. I then examine the strug- gles of the practice under the Romanian Communist system which sought to oppress this tradition. The discussion delineates the resurgence of the trade after 1989, and the Golden Age of witchcraft in the new neoliberal setting.

It does not exceed the prescribed word limit of 80,000 words. ii ABSTRACT Bohdan Tokarskyi ‘A Fragment of Wholeness’: The Making of the Poetic Subject in Vasyl Stus’s Palimpsests My PhD thesis investigates the exploration of the self and the innovative poetical language in the works of the Ukrainian dissident poet and Gulag prisoner Vasyl Stus (1938-1985). Focusing on Stus’s magnum opus collection Palimpsests (1971-1979), where the poet casts the inhuman conditions of his incarceration to the periphery and instead engages in radical introspection, I show how Stus’s poetry foregrounds the very making of the subject as the constant pursuit of the authentic self. Through my examination of unpublished archival materials, analysis of Stus’s underexplored poems, and the contextualisation of the poet’s works within the tradition of the philosophy of becoming, I propose a new reading of Palimpsests, one that redirects scholarly attention from the historical and political to the psychological and philosophical.

In 1951, Max Millikan, the first director of the Office of Research and Reports (ORR) in CIA, identified five objectives for foreign economic intelligence in support of US national security: • Estimating the magnitude of potential military threats to the United States and its allies by calculating the level of military operations a potential enemy's economy could sustain . • Estimating the character and location of future military threats by examining how the potential enemy is allocating its resources. • Assisting in judging the intentions of a potential enemy by monitoring changes in its economic policies. • Helping policymakers to reduce possible military threats by telling them how economic measures could impair a potential enemy's economic capabilities. • Assisting in the estimation of probable development of the relative strength of the East and West blocs in the near term, assuming hostilities are avoided._!_ When Millikan formulated these objectives, the Korean war was on, and the possibility of conflict with the USSR was real. At the same time, knowledge of the Soviet economy was sketchy. As Millikan put it, his office in the first half of 1951 "was engaged in taking an inventory of its ignorance concerning the economy of the Soviet Bloc."1 Soviet economic statistics were of little help. Publication of detailed statistics had ceased for all practical purposes after World War II.

The thesis examines the place of counterinsurgency in Soviet military thought and compares the Swiet counterinsurgent campaigns in Soviet Central Asia, the Ukraine, Lithuania, and Afghanistan.
