GSA PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT Did your kid recently come out as LGBTQ+? Are you looking to learn how to be a better ally? Still just can’t get the hang of this whole pronoun thing? The SEHS Gender and Sexuality Alliances invites you to come to their Parent Education Night on Tuesday, April 16, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Library for a crash course on all things LGBTQ+. Snacks will be provided. Parents and students of all identities and levels of familiarity with the LGBTQ+ community are welcome!

DONATIONS FOR COUNSELING OFFICE The counseling office is in need of some donations: • Up to four nice, comfy, good condition armchairs for the tranquil portion of the counseling office. • Assorted tea bags and paper cups that students can have while spending time in the counseling office. Please note that we are looking for paper to-go cups for hot beverages, not reusable mugs. If you're able to donate tea or paper cups, please bring them to the counseling office. If you have an armchair donation, please email a picture to Melinda Shull at [email protected].

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES • AP TESTING ~ This year we have an abundance of AP testers! We need several volunteers to assist our paid Proctor with the variety of tasks involved in the testing process. Family members cannot volunteer in tests with their student, but we have several tests that are large and need help. o The following morning tests need help: May 7, 9, 10 and 16. Volunteers should arrive at 7:45 AM and usually tests conclude around 12 noon. o If you are able to help us, please contact Kathy Ruggles at [email protected]. Thank you!

• ROOSEVELT MIDDLE SCHOOL is having their Annual Showcase on Friday, April 26, 2019, from 6-8:30pm. We immensely appreciated your help in the past years and will very thankful if you can volunteer during our event this year. • GRAD NIGHT 2019 ~ Each year parents organize a grad party on graduation night in order to give South seniors a safe and fun place to spend graduation night after the Hult Center ceremony is over. The event is usually from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Usually, junior and senior parents assist with organizing. Several parents are still needed to help with the planning for this event on June 7. It is not a large time commitment but there are some pieces that need to come together now and new ideas and energy are always welcome. SOUTH EUGENE ROWING CLUB SUMMER CAMP The local Eugene rowing club is having a learn-to-row summer camp the last two weeks of July. The camp would run July 22nd through August 2nd with a regatta (race) against other summer camp programs on August 3rd. Kids that are interested would be picked up at South Eugene High School at 8:00 a.m. on a bus each week day and returned to South Eugene High School at 2:30 p.m. on the same bus. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY and this camp is open to 8th -12th graders. SENIORS~LCC PLACEMENT TESTING AT SEHS Friday, April 12th & 19th, LCC Placement testing will be held in Room 4 at 2:45 pm. The Reading/Writing test will be given. Sign up in the College & Career Center. Bring your L# and photo ID. When you sign up, check the information on the Testing clipboard to be certain this test is a requirement for you. Go to accuplacer.org for Study Questions, since you will want to score as high as possible for this test. See Kathy Ruggles in Room 302 for more information.

WORK STUDY FOR SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS Sophomores & Juniors: As you are considering classes for next year, please consider the opportunity to work for 4j where you earn both credit (.5 elective credit per term) and pay! Students must be 16 years old, have a 3.0 GPA, good attendance and making progress towards graduation. There are positions for one and two periods, and seniors are eligible to apply for positions at other South region schools. STUDENT VOLUNTEERING • YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a free community-wide event geared towards helping children and families create healthier, happier lives. The Y is currently looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways including setting up or cleaning up, face painting, welcoming families, helping at the raffle table, assisting with games, and more. The event, itself, runs from 11am to 2 pm at the Eugene Family YMCA (2055 Patterson St). Set up and clean up happen before and after the event. To sign up: click here. For more info, email Amber Alexander, [email protected]. • Nearby Nature is looking for high-school-age Outdoor Leaders to help their staff run summer day camps for children ages 3-13. Outdoor Leaders help with outdoor adventures, games, crafts, storytelling, scientific discovery, and more. Volunteering as an Outdoor Leader is a great way to earn community service credit and develop leadership skills -- and it's lots of fun! Students interested in becoming Outdoor Leaders should read the job description and fill out an application. Required training will be held from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on June 8 and 9. Questions? Email [email protected]. • High Hope Haven is a nonprofit in Eugene that provides nonverbal mental- health therapy to individuals. The therapy includes feedback from horses. The program has many spring cleaning opportunities including tack room cleaning/organizing, tack cleaning, water trough cleaning, clearing drainage ditches, tool organization, obstacle building, and fence clearing. Text 541-520- 9389 or email [email protected] you are interested in helping out. • Registration now open for students ages 14-17 interested in the Eugene Family YMCA Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program. This is an opportunity for youth to gain hands-on experience while working with campers and being guided by camp leaders. The applications can be filled out and turned in to the Youth Development Office at the main YMCA location on Patterson or they can be filled out online and emailed back to Maritza Ruiz, Multi-Site Coordinator, Eugene Family YMCA (2055 Patterson St, 541-686-9622, [email protected]). • Willamalane Volunteer Program has many spring volunteer opportunities available for students. • 4/12-4/14/19: Friends of the Eugene Public Library Annual Book Sale. Volunteers needed to set up books on tables, re-stock tables, keep books in good viewing order, and help customers as needed. • 4/26/19: Edgewood Elementary School Fun Night from 5:15-8 pm. Seeking volunteers to work at simple carnival games and help our elementary school have fun and raise funds for the school. Please sign up here, https://signup.com/go/izwBuJE, to help us make this night a success! • 5/18/19: Head Start of Lane County's Annual Family Fishing Day will take place from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in Alton Baker Park. They are seeking volunteers to help run their carnival games. They feed volunteers lunch, and volunteers get a break from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Sharpf (LKS) Educational Scholarship Foundation is new local scholarship offering up to $20,000 a year to 8 to 12 students planning to attend school in Oregon and whose household income is $50,000 or less. The renewable awards support students attending two- year, four-year, and vocational schools from Benton, Lane, Linn and Marion counties. The award amounts are tied to tuition. Application includes personal essays, two letters of recommendation, transcripts and FAFSA. Please visit the Career Center with your completed application to confirm with the staff that you have included all required parts before submitting application. o Please give at least two weeks' notice (preferably four weeks!) for requesting any letters of recommendation, and if you specifically want a counselor recommendation, submit the yellow Scholarship Recommendation Request form, available in the counseling center and in the career center.

• PSAT Scores (paper copies): are now available in the career center. To view your full score report online, go to psat.org/myscore.

• Oregon Promise Grant: Breaking news--Seniors with an EFC at or above 18,000 are not guaranteed to receive the Oregon Promise in 2019-20. Please plan accordingly.

• Selected for FAFSA Verification? Contact the college/university you plan to attend ASAP in order to complete the verification process. The process must be done before you can receive any state or federal aid.

• Elite Colleges, Entitled Teens and Guilted Parents: article by Lynn O’Shaughnessy, author of The College Solution blog.

• Summer Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL) Program at the U of O is now accepting applications. SAIL offers FREE week-long day and residential academic summer programs on the campus. Learn about various topics through fun, social, and interactive activities from distinguished University of Oregon faculty members. They offer sessions on the college admissions process, scholarships, and how to navigate financial aid, as well. Applicants must be current 9th through 11th graders who come from low-income families, will be first-generation college students, come from underrepresented minority backgrounds, are "unaccompanied youth," are returning SAIL students, or are siblings of returning students. • Oregon Private Colleges Week: is open for registration. There is no better time or opportunity for students to explore Oregon's private colleges while earning application fee waivers. This year, OPC Week will take place from 7/29-8/2. • Oregon Summer Programs 2019: Don't be bored this summer! Summer camps and programs across Oregon help you learn something new, build your leadership skills, explore careers, and have fun. Many programs are no or low- cost and/or offer scholarships. But hurry! Many deadlines are coming up soon.

• Rites of Passage Summer Youth Academies @ LCC. These programs are designed to inform and inspire high-school and middle-school students of color in Lane County. African-American, Asian and Pacific-Islander American, Native American, and Latinx students are immersed in their own respective summer programs focusing on cultural history, literature, folklore, and traditions. These programs are based in an academic framework that promotes positive self-image and self-esteem.

• Americorps: Considering taking a gap year after graduation? This federal service program is dedicated to building young leaders, serving disadvantaged communities, increasing job skills, and providing opportunities to earn money for education. Through AmeriCorps, young adults are assigned to work in non- profits, government agencies, and community-based organizations throughout the . In exchange for their 10 months of service, students receive money for college, living allowances, health benefits, and new job skills. • Northwest Youth Corps and Idaho Conservation Corps: Are you looking for summer work? Do you love the outdoors? The Northwest Youth Corps and Idaho Conservation Corps’ 2019 youth application is now open! All of their spring through fall conservation programs based in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho can be found in this portal.

• At YEBW (Young Entrepreneurs Business Week) students live on an area university campus for a week during the summer to learn about business fundamentals, as well as leadership, teamwork, networking, public speaking and more. During each program, YEBW incorporates inspirational speakers, interactive learning exercises and other professional growth activities. Register to attend. • 4/15/19: Application due for the OSU Summer Veterinary Experience, a hands- on learning experience for academically talented (current) sophomore and junior high-school students interested in veterinary medicine. • 4/15/19: Applications to attend Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership camp) due in the career center. This free camp will take place in Dorena from 6/22- 6/27/19 and is for rising juniors (current sophomores) with an interest in developing their leadership skills. Ideal RYLA campers should exhibit flexibility, resilience, compassion, a willingness to work hard, the ability to think outside the box, and the courage to step out of their comfort zone. The application, a recommendation form to be completed by a school official, and a petition form to be signed by 3 teachers are all part of the application. • 4/17 and 4/18/19: Free Resume-Building Webinar. 5-6:30 pm PST. Learn how to build your most compelling resume with the help of the college admissions experts at Story2! This course is FREE for Naviance students. Sign up.

• 4/27/19: Conference re: House Bill 2016 State of Emergency for African- American Students in Oregon. This conference will take place from 10-2:30 on LCC's main campus in the Center for Meeting and Learning. Its purpose is to bring together parents, teachers, and students to learn about the state of emergency and generate possible solutions to the issues.

• 5/7 and 5/8/19: Start dates for RTEC 101, a FREE 1-2 credit course offered by LCC to help students become familiar and comfortable with the campus, its resources, and the ways to access them most easily. • 5/10/19: LCC's Industrial Trades Day: Come learn about LCC's Diesel Technology, Fabrication/Welding Technology, and Automotive Technology programs with these 5-6-hour hands-on tours. • 5/13/19: Critical Care Awareness Day from 9 am-6 pm at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend, conference room 200. The expert team in the intensive care unit (ICU) integrates knowledge, clinical skills and technology to ensure the best possible care for the sickest patients in our community. Critical Care Awareness Day is a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like!

• 5/15/19: Willamette High School Career & College Knowledge Night from 6-8 pm. Open to all area students. Light dinner provided. At 6:30 families will be able to visit booths for local businesses, colleges, and the military to gain information about different career paths and opportunities. WHS is still looking for additional local businesses to partner with them for this event. • 5/16/19: Job Fair at LCC (Center for Meeting and Learning, Main Campus in Building 19) from 10 am-2 pm • 5/30/19: WISE Symposium rescheduled to this date due to the weather. Registrations for the original February symposium will remain valid for the May date; those who want to participate in May but did not register can register between now and 8 pm on Wednesday, May 29th. The symposium will run from 3:30-7:30 and will be a series of workshops taught by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) professionals, to take place in the Churchill HS auditorium. Free and open to ALL Lane County students. WISE Symposium schedule and workshops.
