While the number of escaped individuals in Israel is still limited, Prosopis has invaded large areas in Jordan and has become the main invasive alien tree in the Jordan valley. It is also now spreading in the canyons of south Jordan. The distinct prosopis invasion patterns in Israel and Jordan are discussed. Control programs are urgently needed in order to contain the proliferation of Prosopis, which now poses a major threat to natural habitats as well as to fallow fields. The ongoing establishment of dense thickets of Prosopis along wadis with year-round water flow is likely to displace native species such as Acacia raddiana Savi, and to alter the function of natural ecosystems. This study is aimed to analyze the pollen morphology of angiosperm species present in the study area of the “Unidade de Conservação Parque Estadual do Espinilho”. Botanical material was collected, and herbaria were consulted to obtain pollen material, processed by acetolysis technique. Pollen grains of the 45 species are presented (one magnoliid, five monocots and 39 eudicots). Among the species are Prosopis affinis Spreng., Prosopis nigra Hieron., Vachellia caven (Molina) Seigler & Ebinger and Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco Schltdl that characterize the formation “Savana Estépica Parque” . The results of this work contribute to studies of Quaternary palynology under development in “Savana Estépica Parque” vegetation , besides enabling the determination of the areas once cov ered by the “Savana Estépica Parque” in the past, in Rio Grande do Sul, since it is estimated that the area of occurrence of this vegetation decreased significantly from the beginning of Holocene. Despite the ecologi- cal and the economic potential of this tree, studies in Brazil are limited to descriptions of the occurrence sites of P. affinis. Aiming to determine the existence of diversification at floral and/or at population levels for this spe- cies, morphological characteristics of inflorescences and flowers of Prosop- is affinis growing in the Pampa biome were measured, while the pollen/ ovule ratio and the outcrossing index were determined as an indirect esti- mate of the species breeding system. No clear reproductive specialization related to flower position in the inflorescence was observed, although basal flowers in the inflorescence presented reduction of the androecium. The results also showed that P. affinis presents a breeding system intermediary between facultative autogamy and xenogamy, with upper stamens support- ing self-pollination, reduced stamens supporting outcrossing and the likely occurrence of an evolutionary shift at geographical level. Familia Fabaceae o Leguminosae La familia Fabaceae es considerada claramente monofilética en análisis tanto moleculares como morfológicos, sin embargo según Takhtajan 1997 era tratada como tres familias distintas. En las actuales reconstrucciones de filogenia, la subfamilia Caesalpinioideae es considerada parafilética, mientras que las subfamilias Mimosoideae y Faboideae (o Papilionoideae) son consideradas monofiléticas. Sin embargo, actualmente el reconocimiento de la subfamilia Caesalpinoideae se mantiene por razones meramente prácticas. (Steven, 2009) Los estudios filogenéticos llevados a cabo hasta el momento no fueron suficientes para la elaboración de una clasificación aceptable a nivel de subfamilias en Fabaceae. De cualquier forma es evidente que la subfamilia Caesalpinoideae al ser considerada parafilética debe ser redefinida. Así uno de los grupos que aparece claramente disociado de las Caesalpinoideae es Cercideae, al cual pertenece el género Bauhinia. Sin embargo es muy prematuro el reconocimiento de nuevos grupos formalmente (Lewis, 2005). Lo que queda claro hasta el momento es que el número de subfamilias dentro de Fabaceae debe ser superior de las tres tradicionalmente reconocidas y que el clado Cercideae podrá constituir una de las nuevas subfamilias.(Souza & Lorenzi, 2008) A nivel de familia, las leguminosas se encuentran cercanamente relacionadas con las familias Polygalaceae, Suraniaceae y Quillajaceae, las cuales forman el orden Fabales (Stevens, 2001) Clave artificial para el reconocimiento de las subfamilias 1. Assessment of new biocontrol agents of Parkinsonia Abstract MLA contracted CSIRO (2010-2013) to assess potential new biocontrol agents of parkinsonia, a serious weed of the northern beef industry. The objectives were to select the top three species and conclusively determine whether they are suitable for release and to submit release applications. We exceeded these objectives by determining the suitability of the ten previously-identified highest priority agents. Six were rejected based entirely onnative range work and five (including a new species) were assessed further in an Australian quarantine facility. Of the latter two were shown to be suitable biocontrol agents, both looper caterpillars (family Geometridae). The first of these, Eueupithecia cisplatensis, has been approved for release and the first releases have been made in northern Australia; it is too early to know the results of these releases.
