This study is aimed to analyze the pollen morphology of angiosperm species present in the study area of the “Unidade de Conservação Parque Estadual do Espinilho”. Botanical material was collected, and herbaria were consulted to obtain pollen material, processed by acetolysis technique. Pollen grains of the 45 species are presented (one magnoliid, five monocots and 39 eudicots). Among the species are Prosopis affinis Spreng., Prosopis nigra Hieron., Vachellia caven (Molina) Seigler & Ebinger and Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco Schltdl that characterize the formation “Savana Estépica Parque” . The results of this work contribute to studies of Quaternary palynology under development in “Savana Estépica Parque” vegetation , besides enabling the determination of the areas once cov ered by the “Savana Estépica Parque” in the past, in Rio Grande do Sul, since it is estimated that the area of occurrence of this vegetation decreased significantly from the beginning of Holocene. Keywords: Pollen morphology, “Savana Estépica Parque”, “Pampa” Biome.

Species highlighted in RED are the ones illustrated with photos in this report. INTRODUCTION Not everyone is fortunate enough to visit Peru; a marvelous country that boasts a huge country bird list, which is second only to Colombia. Unlike our usual set departure, we started out with a daylong extension to Lomas de Lachay first, before starting out on the usual itinerary for the main tour. On this extra day we managed to 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-0514 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report PERU: Manu and Machu Picchu Aug-Sept. 2015 find many extra birds like Peruvian Thick-knee, Least Seedsnipe, Peruvian Sheartail, Raimondi’s Yellow- Finch and the localized Cactus Canastero. The first site of the main tour was Huacarpay Lake, near the beautiful Andean city of Cusco (accessed after a short flight from Lima). This gave us a few endemic species like Bearded Mountaineer and Rusty-fronted Canastero; along with other less local species like Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal, Andean Negrito and Puna Ibis. The following day we birded along the road towards Manu where we picked up birds like Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Spot-winged Pigeon, and a beautiful Peruvian endemic in the form of Creamy-crested Spinetail. We also saw Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Black-faced Ibis, Hooded and Scarlet-bellied Mountain- Tanagers, Red-crested Cotinga and the gorgeous Grass-green Tanager.

(Fabaceae) suggests flexibility of the reproductive system in isolated populations within the Brazilian Pampa. Ann. For. Res. 61(1): 37-47. Abstract. Prosopis affinis is native tree of the Brazilian Pampa, recognized as an important species to local culture and economy. Despite the ecologi- cal and the economic potential of this tree, studies in Brazil are limited to descriptions of the occurrence sites of P. affinis. Aiming to determine the existence of diversification at floral and/or at population levels for this spe- cies, morphological characteristics of inflorescences and flowers of Prosop- is affinis growing in the Pampa biome were measured, while the pollen/ ovule ratio and the outcrossing index were determined as an indirect esti- mate of the species breeding system. No clear reproductive specialization related to flower position in the inflorescence was observed, although basal flowers in the inflorescence presented reduction of the androecium. The results also showed that P. affinis presents a breeding system intermediary between facultative autogamy and xenogamy, with upper stamens support- ing self-pollination, reduced stamens supporting outcrossing and the likely occurrence of an evolutionary shift at geographical level. These findings highlight the importance of conserving the remnants of P.

While the number of escaped individuals in Israel is still limited, Prosopis has invaded large areas in Jordan and has become the main invasive alien tree in the Jordan valley. It is also now spreading in the canyons of south Jordan. The distinct prosopis invasion patterns in Israel and Jordan are discussed. Control programs are urgently needed in order to contain the proliferation of Prosopis, which now poses a major threat to natural habitats as well as to fallow fields. The ongoing establishment of dense thickets of Prosopis along wadis with year-round water flow is likely to displace native species such as Acacia raddiana Savi, and to alter the function of natural ecosystems. Montane and submontane forest patches in the state of Bahia, Brazil, are among the few large and preserved Atlantic Forests remnants. They are strongholds of an almost complete elevational gradient, which harbor both lowland and highland bird taxa. Despite being considered a biodiversity hotspot, few ornithologists have surveyed these forests, especially along elevational gradients. Here we compile bird records acquired from systematic surveys and random observations carried out since the 1980s in a 7,500 ha private protected area: Serra Bonita private reserve. We recorded 368 species, of which 143 are Atlantic Forest endemic taxa.

  • Diversity and Endemism in Tidal-Marsh Vertebrates
Studies in Avian Biology No. 32:32-53 DIVERSITY AND ENDEMISM IN TIDAL-MARSH VERTEBRATES RUSSELL GREENBERG AND JESúS E. MALDONADO Abstract. Tidal marshes are distributed patcliily, predominantly along the mid- to high-latitude coasts of the major continents. The greatest extensions of non-arctic tidal marshes are found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, but local concentrations can be found in Great Britain, northern Europe, northern Japan, northern China, and northern Korea, Argentina-Uruguay-Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. We tallied the number of terrestrial vertebrate species that regularly occupy tidal marshes in each of these regions, as well as species or subspecies that are largely restricted to tidal marshes. In each of the major coastal areas we found 8-21 species of breeding birds and 13-25 species of terrestrial mammals. The diversity of tidal-marsh birds and mammals is highly inter-correlated, as is the diversity of species restricted to saltmarshes. These values are, in turn, correlated with tidal-marsh area along a coastline. We estimate approximately seven species of turtles occur in brackish or saltmarshes worldwide, but only one species is endemic and it is found in eastern North America. A large number of frogs and snakes occur opportunistically in tidal marshes, primarily in southeastern United States, particularly Florida. Three endemic snake taxa are restricted to tidal marshes of eastern North America as well. Overall, only in North America were we able to find documentation for multiple taxa of terrestrial vertebrates associated with tidal marshes. These include one species of mammal and two species of birds, one species of snake, and one species of turtle.

Tropical Birding Trip Report Southern ECUADOR: Nov-Dec 2019 (custom tour) Southern Ecuador 18th November – 6th December 2019 Hummingbirds were a big feature of this tour; with 58 hummingbird species seen, that included some very rare, restricted range species, like this Blue-throated Hillstar. This critically-endangered species was only described in 2018, following its discovery a year before that, and is currently estimated to number only 150 individuals. To illustrate this, we managed to record just over 600 bird species on this trip (601) of less than three weeks, including over 80 specialties. This private group had a wide variety of travel experience among them; some had not been to South America at all, and ended up with hundreds of new birds, others had covered northern Ecuador before, but still walked away with 120 lifebirds, and others who’d covered both northern Ecuador and northern Peru, (directly either side of the region covered on this tour), still had nearly 90 new birds, making this a profitable tour for both “veterans” and “South American Virgins” alike.
