A distinctive persistent World for Neverwinter Nights Introduction n a far distant time when the multiverse was new formed the various planes and dimensions were linked. Minions from each were free to travel at will between them through gateways that formed where the physical manifestations of the planes intersected with each other. One such gateway existed in a place that shall forever be known as Shadow Mountain where a prime material plane intersected with the Plane of Shadow. It was here that many ancient wars were fought and the gods themselves were almost deposed. R ENÉ R EINHOLD S CHALLEGGER Game Changers – Representations of Queerness in Canadian Videogame Design _____________________ Zusammenfassung Aufgrund der sich verändernden Demographie der Spielenden, sowie der Domestizie- rung und Entmystifizierung von Videospielen, ist das Medium in der Mitte der Gesell- schaft angekommen. Weite Teile des bisherigen Zielpublikums, die Gamer, reagieren aggressiv auf den resultierenden Autoritätsverlust und den wahrgenommenen Identi- tätsverlust. Besonders Darstellungen sexueller und geschlechtlicher Identitäten sind zu einem Schlachtfeld in diesem Kulturkrieg geworden, während sich die Industrie an ein kollabierendes imaginäres Publikum klammert. Zusammen mit einer Diversifizierung der Designer-Community müssen inklusive Repräsentationsregime über den Indie-Sek- tor hinaus zum Standard werden. BioWare hat mehr zu diesen notwendigen Verände- rungen beigetragen als irgendein anderes Studio. Mit Mass Effect und Dragon Age haben sie die Grenzen des Akzeptablen in der Darstellung von Geschlecht und Sexualität im Videospiel verschoben. Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014) ist das erste völlig inklusive Spiel der westlichen Designtradition, und es kommuniziert zudem noch zutiefst kanadi- sche Werte und Normen in seiner Identitätspolitik, seinem Repräsentationsregime und seiner sozio-politischen Ethik. Large parts of the formerly privileged demographic, ‘The Gamers’, react aggressively to the resulting loss of authori- ty and a perceived loss of identity. Especially representations of sexual and gender iden- tities have become a battleground in these culture wars, with the industry still holding on to a collapsing imagined audience. Together with a diversification of the designer community, inclusive representational regimes must become the standard. -

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition Amn Survival Guide 1 Dedication to Daniel Walker Dan Walker was the second employee of BioWare, having started work at the company in late 1995. He passed away June 6, 1999 of natural causes related to a physical disability he had since birth. We have dedicated Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn to Dan. It’s quite hard to find the words to describe how we all felt about him, but it has fallen upon me to try, so I’ll do my best. Dan was a spiritual giant, who battled a severe physical impediment since birth with patience and stoicism. I can’t recall him ever complaining about anything, though he certainly had more reason to do so than most. Many times I felt humbled by his patience and his Zen way of looking at things. He was, and is, an inspiration to me and many others at BioWare. Dan was an artist in the purest meaning of the word. He enjoyed, more than anything, that people could see and take pleasure in the art he created. And the art he created was very, very good. He lived his life like it was a work of art. In retrospect, it is clear that he was one of the seminal influences around which BioWare has grown and blossomed.
