Class Instructor Time Room Length Limit Fee Description Beginning Drawn Thread Work Ygraine of Kellswood 11:00-1:00 4 2.0 12 This class will cover the basics of drawn thread embroidery for decoration, stabilizing cutwork openings, and creating hemstitched edges. We will prepare a small fabric sample and do several stitches. Introduction to Appliqué Elizabet Marshall 11:00-12:00 3 1.0 10 $2.00 Hands on class to make an appliquéd needlebook. Kit will include felt or felted wool (depending on shopping success), wool and silk threads, materials for finishing and detailed instructions (kit materials may vary). Couching Fenice Autun 11:00-12:00 2 1.0 8 $0.00 This class will talk about how to use couching to add a quick embellishment to a hem or cuff. We will look at general techniques as well as some more decorative techniques (such as specialty stitching to add interest, and tracing shapes). The class size is small so the class can be tailored to the interests and experience of the attendees. I will also bring an assortment of currently available modern embroidery threads that could be used as a replacement for no longer available medieval decorative elements. it is recommended that attendees bring scissors and needles. If you wish to bring fabric and threads that you might use in practice, those are also welcome. Handout will include stitch diagrams and Stitch bibliography of "how to" books. The focus will be on stitches and techniques used in the Viking era. Scraps will be available to try stitches, or bring your own. No fee, no limit. The works are mostly late period; a few are early 17th c. and include blackwork, tent stitch, and others. Introduction to Petit Point Aleksei Dmitriev 1:30-2:30 2 1.0 10 $5.00 Petit point—in French meaning "small point"—was popular form of needlepoint in 16th century France and England that Embroidery uses closely woven canvas or fabric and small stitches to create very detailed embroidery motifs. It is a counted technique, and was often used to create slips, where the motif was cut out and appliquéd onto a larger piece. The class will teach how use petit point to create a slip. Kits will be available for $5.00 or bring your own hoop, 28-count fabric, floss, and pattern. Kits are limited to 10, but there is no limit on handouts, which will include some patterns. The Oxburgh Hangings Briony of Chatham 1:30-2:30 4 1.0 $0.00 A fascinating and unique set of Elizabethan-era embroidered wall hangings, the Oxburgh Hangings offer a fascinating glimpse into the culture of the time, and into the lives of the two famous women who embroidered them: Mary Queen of Scots and Bess Hardwick. This class offers an overview of these pieces. Bayeux Embroidery Elizabet Marshall 1:30-3:00 3 1.5 10 $3.00 Hands on class for learning the stitches that make up the bulk of the embroidery on the Bayeux Tapestry – stem stitch and the laid-and-couched work often referred to as “Bayeux stitch.” Class includes opportunity to look at books. Kit will include a practice square, threads and a motif to take home and work. Introduction to Goldwork Vienna de la Mer 1:30-3:30 1 2.0 10 $4.00 This two hour class provides an overview of the history and different styles of metal thread embroidery, as well as a hands on using later period materials and embroidery techniques. Tenerife Lace Barbeta Kyrkeland 2:30-3:30 4 1.0 10 $0.50 Student will leave with a piece of lace started on a form, with instructions to finish it at home. May not be suitable for under age 12. Quilting Sarah Davies 2:30-4:30 2 2.0 10 Donations Quilting may be as American as apple pie, but the true origins of this needle art stretch back over 2,000 years. Come accepted learn about the history and techniques of quilting during the SCA period, plus start a small project you can work on at home. A listing of the items, with the information the V&A has on each piece, will be provided. Because of low light conditions, the colors of the photos are sometimes poor, but the pictures are sharp enough to see the stitches.
