THE WORKS OF ART IN THE AGE OF DIGITAL REPRODUCTION THE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND The Impossible Exhibitions project derives from an instance of cultural democracy that has its precursors in Paul Valéry, Walter Benjamin and André Malraux. The project is also born of the awareness that in the age of the digital reproducibility of the work of art, the concepts of safeguarding and (cultural and economic) evaluation of the artistic patrimony inevitably enter not only the work as itself, but also its reproduction: “For a hundred years here, as soon as the history of art has escaped specialists, it has been the history of what can be photographed” (André Malraux). When one artist's work is spread over various museums, churches and private collections in different continents, it becomes almost impossible to mount monograph exhibitions that give a significant overall vision of the great past artist's work. It is even harder to create great exhibitions due to the museum directors’ growing – and understandable – unwillingness to loan the works, as well as the exorbitant costs of insurance and special security measures, which are inevitable for works of incalculable value. Impossible Exhibitions start from these premises. She was the daughter of Count Jerzy Detloff Fleming and Princess Antonina Czartoryska. She married Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski on November 18, 1761 in Wołczyn. Kochański and the Jesuits
ORGANON 14 LA SCIENCE BAROQUE ET WILANÓW Ludwik Grzebień (Poland) KOCHAŃSKI AND THE JESUITS Adam Kochański belongs to those Polish Jesuits about whom we do not have much information. The works he devoted himself to extend beyond the usual limits of the work undertaken by the Jesuits, they were not very striking, and did not afford the college chroniclers the material they required. Besides, frequent changes of his permanent place of residence did not promote his glorification in domestic annals. The few archival documents were destroyed or scattered as a result of the suppression of the Society of Jesus, wars and national cataclysms. None the less, it is possible today to trace fairly clearly the changes in his life, to present his works, acquaint oneself with his troubles and problems, and finally to become acquainted with his influence upon the environment in which he lived and worked1. Kochański was born on the 5th August, 16312 in Dobrzyń district (or in Dobrzyń itself). He completed his secondary education in the Jesuit College in Toruń where in the lower classes he took grammar, syntax, poetics and rhetoric3. The Jesuit College in Toruń was not especially remarkable at that time. But Copernican traditions were strong in Toruń and there was a well established Protestant School there during this period. On the 24th August, 1652 Kochański entered the noviciate of the Society of Jesus in Wilno4. Why was Wilno his choice? The Jesuits had two provinces at this time. The Polish one, to which Toruń belonged, and the Lithuanian with Wilno and Warsaw. The noviciates were only in Wilno and Cracow. -

REKONESANS I Katalog pamiątek złożonych w Domu Gotyckim w Puławach jest ukoronowa- niem działalności Izabeli Czartoryskiej, związanej z prowadzonym przez nią opisem zbiorów muzealnych. Dzieło ma formę trzytomowego ilustrowanego rękopisu. Ilustracje do niego, często kopie zmieszczonych w Domu Gotyckim portretów, wykonał Józef Richter, malarz związany z książęcą parą, zwłaszcza po roku 1804, w którym Polskę opuścił Jan Piotr Norblin. Zanim dzieło Czar- toryskiej uzyskało ostateczny kształt, miało dwie wersje wstępne i formę skró- coną, będącą inwentarzem pamiątek. Pierwszy wariant wstępny to wersja francuskojęzyczna: Cataloque historique et détaillé des objets réunis à la Maison Gotique à Puławy, achevé l’an 1809, drugi stanowi jej tłumaczenie: Katalog rozumowany Domu Gotyckiego. Wersją będącą tylko rejestrem pamią- tek opisanych w dziele Czartoryskiej jest Poczet pamiątek zachowanych w Domu Gotyckim w Puławach, z którego Przedmowy wynika, że w roku wydania książki, a więc w 1828, Katalog pamiątek złożonych w Domu Gotyc- kim w Puławach był dziełem ukończonym, powstającym, jak większość przy- gotowywanych przez Czartoryską opisów pamiątek, z myślą o publikacji1. Praktykę opisu pamiątek rozpoczęła Czartoryska wraz z powstaniem Świą- tyni Sybilli i Domu Gotyckiego. Sam zamysł utworzenia zbiorów Świątyni 1 Spis wszystkich wersji opisów pamiątek Domu Gotyckiego wraz z sygnaturami sporządził Z. Żygulski. Zob. Z. Jan Zamoyski Dzieciostwo i młodośd Jan Sariusz Zamoyski urodził się 19 marca 1542 roku w Skokówce. Był synem Stanisława Zamoyskiego i Anny Herburt-Zamoyskiej. Uczył się w szkole katedralnej w Krasnymstawie, a następnie wyjechał na naukę do Paryża. Studiował też w Strasburgu i Padwie. W 1563 został wybrany rektorem akademii padewskiej. Tam też napisał po łacinie swe dzieło „De Senatu Romano Libri II” („O Senacie Rzymskim Księgi Dwie”). Dwór królewski i elekcja viritim Po powrocie z Włoch został przyjęty na dwór królewski w Krakowie jako sekretarz Zygmunta Augusta. Sumiennie wykonywał swoje obowiązki takie jak np. redagowanie listów i pism władcy, uczestniczenie w obradach senatu czy porządkowanie archiwum skarbca. Dzięki temu otrzymywał od króla kolejne majątki ziemskie. Po śmierci władcy w 1572 roku, Zamoyski wysunął koncepcję elekcji viritim. Był przejęty sytuacją Rzeczypospolitej i chciał, aby cała szlachta decydowała o wyborze nowego króla. Elekcja została przyjęta, a Zamoyski jako przywódca szlachty stał się aktywnym politykiem. Tron na krótki czas objął Henryk Walezy, a następnie Stefan Batory, który uczynił Zamoyskiego podkanclerzym koronnym i swym doradcą. Współpraca ze Stefanem Batorym Zamoyski pomagał królowi w realizacji jego śmiałych planów. 1 marca 1578 roku został kanclerzem wielkim koronnym. Wkrótce stał się także potężnym magnatem i zmienił swoje poglądy polityczne w kierunku władzy monarszej. Zaczął naukę sztuki wojennej, a od 1579 r. uczestniczył w wojnie z Moskwą. W 1580 r. stał się założycielem Zamościa, gdzie później utworzył Akademię Zamojską. 11 sierpnia 1581 r. został mianowany hetmanem wielkim koronnym. Po zwycięskiej wojnie z Moskwą doprowadził do traktatu pokojowego. Opozycja do władzy W 1586 r. umarł Stefan Batory, a nowym królem miał zostad Zygmunt Waza.
