The past year has without doubt been one of considerable but necessary change at the Club as we pursue our ongoing goal of creating and delivering an environment that is relevant and engaging for members and guests. The Committee year began with the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer, Paul Grainger who quickly intro- duced operational discipline and demonstrated his vast experience in Club management. Paul is a consummate professional and a pleasure to work with. From a governance perspective, the Club is very fortunate to have a group of strong business professionals across a variety of industry disciplines and backgrounds and a very committed Principal Committee to guide overall policy, however the Committee is also very committed to the notion that the Chief Executive and his team operate the Club on behalf of all of our members on a day to day basis, with full Committee support. This is fundamental to our ongoing success. Financial Results One of the primary goals of the Committee this year has been to reverse the past few years of trading loss and I am very pleased to report that significant progress has been made with a nominal loss of ($27,045) being reported after income tax and Depreciation. If the depreciation is left to one side, the Club is trading profitably. With the num- ber of covers remaining stable, food revenues up by 5% on last year and beverage lower, primarily due to lower Cellar sales, overall trading revenue was slightly reduced by 3% on last year. However and importantly daily man- agement of food, beverage and wage costs have resulted in a hugely significant turnaround in profitability in Food and Beverage operations. Private Functions for the membership, an integral part of our Club business achieved a notable uplift of 6% in revenues. Positive influx of new members also contributed to increased revenues in the area of Membership. It is also pleas- ing to note a net asset value of $19,153,698 and an increase in the cash balance of the Club to $1,355,166, demon- strating the solid financial position and foundation of the Brisbane Club. The Principal Committee is now in the final stages of being able to create an ongoing capital reserve fund for essential future equipment replacement and facility improvement projects. Membership Services and Facilities A proactive approach has been taken this year in continuing to grow membership and to better understand the specific segments of our membership growth areas such as female and young executive categories. This began towards the end of 2015, with the Membership Committee and CEO doing a wonderful job researching and developing a Membership Strategy Paper identifying capacity and financial needs for the future. This has led to the recent membership promotion campaign – GOAL 250, with the aim of members potentially introducing a further 250 members to the benefits of the Club by the end of 2017, to achieve a target of 1200 Town members. Various initiatives designed to create greater long term engagement with members have been delivered, these include the recent launch of a new website for the Club, which better reflects the current qualities of the Club facili- ties, the introduction of an on line Cellar ordering option and the ability to take a “virtual tour” of the Club, particularly important for those interested in joining the Club or holding a private function. Greater activity has been generated on social media, specifically around Club events which has certainly assisted in the popularity and bookings for events offered. A relaxation of the dress code in the members Dining Room, where ties are now optional to reflect the Brisbane corporate environment has been adopted and the Club Lounge is now open from 8am for breakfast and early morning catch ups. 6 Club Events and Interest Groups Member events are the cornerstone of quality private Club’s and the variety and volume of events offered at the Club is second to none. The year kicked off with the successful “Presidents At Home” dinner, with first class enter- tainment generously supported by QPAC. The Brisbane Club luncheon series has seen a whole host of quality and topical speakers grace the Club including the Governor of Queensland his Excellency Paul De Jersey, the Hon Law- rence Springborg MP, Karina Carvalho, Menna Rawlings the British High Commissioner, the Queensland Treasurer, the Hon Curtis Pitt, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and informative speakers communicat- ing the virtues of the Brisbane changing Queens Wharf development. Sporting identities also featured heavily on the calendar with Wallabies Head coach Michael Cheika, English rugby union Head coach Eddie Jones, Queensland Reds legends, AFL legend Simon Black, and Brisbane Lions Head coach Justin Leppitsch generously giving of their time to entertain the membership. Signature events such as Melbourne Cup and Easter and Christmas Family nights were sold out and a full schedule of food and wine centric events dominated the annual calendar. Gourmet Enthusiasts evenings created by the kitch- en crew offered Italian, Cajun, French, East meets West and New York themed nights, with the Cellar securing wine makers from Torbreck, Yabby Lake, Broken Wood, Fox Creek and Tahbilk to name but a few. One of the truly unique elements of Brisbane Club life is the ongoing activity of the various specific interest groups created over time and these continue to flourish as do the first Thursday dining groups. Over 70 Club events are offered annually in addition to the 200 interest group activities during the year, creating an active and vibrant environment. Closing and Thank you During a very much transformational year, I would like to thank firstly you the members for supporting your Club, to my fellow Principal Committee members, Senior Vice President Mr Andrew Noble, Vice President Mr Peter Cowley, Committee members Mr Peter Costantini, Mr Mike Gould, Dr Sally Pitkin and Mr Hamish Dee. Your professional abili- ties, valuable time and unwavering support is truly appreciated. Mr Nigel Chamier AM will sadly depart the Committee after eight years of outstanding service to the Club. Nigel’s long friendship and constant advice around Club matters will always be remembered and on behalf of all members I thank him most sincerely. To the Chief Executive, Paul Grainger and his highly professional team may I thank you all for the daily care you take with all members in delivering a first class service and product. It has been a true honour to serve as your President. After thirty seven years as a member I learned a great deal about “back of the house” issues, but what will stay with me is the extraordinary support and loyalty of our Club members.
