Annual Report 2010 The Public Trustee Annual Report 2009-2010 i The Public Trustee The Public Trustee is an independent statutory authority that reports to Queensland Parliament through Queensland’s Attorney-General and Minister for Industrial Relations. Operating as a corporation sole constituted under the Public Trustee Act 1978 we provide professional, accessible and reliable, trustee, financial and related services to Queenslanders. Year in review The 2009-10 financial year, has seen us build on our 94 years of tradition to ensure we will have a strong and sustainable future. The Public Trustee has endured since 1916 because of the relevance and quality of the services we provide to Queenslanders. During the year, my team of over 500 dedicated staff located across the State, have worked hard to ensure we achieve our vision – To be Queensland’s best providers of trustee and administration services. Sir Walter Campbell is well remembered for his term as the Governor of Queensland, particularly for his deft and effective handling of the state’s 1987 constitutional crisis, when Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen refused to resign after losing the support of his party. Campbell’s career, however, intersected with a range of historical events, including political, legal, constitutional, diplomatic and even military incidents of significance to the nation.

Gray stocked Hughenden Station with 3,000 sheep. Mrs Gray was the first pioneer white woman on the Flinders.

  • The History of the Queensland Parliament, 1957–1989
    1. Inside the Queensland Parliament Before Queensland was established as a separate colony in 1859 ‘separationist settlers’ in the Moreton Bay region had pushed for independence and self-rule. Ideas about self-government and the establishment of a local parliamentary democracy were important inspirations in the formation of colonial Queensland. Early settlers in the territory then known as ‘Northern Australia’, the ‘Northern Districts’ or ‘Cooksland’ showed a strong preference for separation from Sydney and New South Wales and campaigned vigorously for recognition as a new colony. Although nine representatives from the Moreton region sat in the NSW Assembly, separation from the ‘tightly-drawn’ strings of New South Wales became the subject of much local political activity and petitioning to the monarch after 1856 (Pugh 1859). The desire to create a local parliament was not, however, just a philosophical commitment to regional democracy and self-rule. Rather, it reflected an economic desire to manage their own interests, attract additional settlers and develop the northern lands themselves without waiting for the NSW governors to determine their fate. And, the emerging colonial political leaders were prepared to take on the risk of forming a new colony. They knew they would have to make a substantial material commitment over time and impose a major financial burden on the new colony to establish its embryonic political institutions. They also had to inherit a large public debt of some £20 000 as part of separation—the so-called ‘Moreton Bay Debt’, which was transferred from New South Wales to Queensland. It’s time for a clear, visible pregnancy health warning on alcohol. For families, the most important thing in life is the health and wellbeing of our children. That’s why it matters to all of us that our families have access to clear information about the health and safety of the products they buy – especially products that may harm our children. Alcohol can cause brain damage in unborn babies when consumed during pregnancy – a condition known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Alcohol can also lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, low birth weight and developmental problems. Yet these products have never before been legally required to carry a health warning. Thankfully, that’s about to change. We are all in agreement that we need a mandatory label. Now our independent food authority has developed a clear and visible label that, with your support, will soon appear on all alcohol products sold in Australia and New Zealand. This will replace the ineffective and confusing label applied inconsistently by some alcohol producers to date. You will soon be meeting to decide whether to support this carefully designed label. As you do so, we ask that you put the health and wellbeing of Australian children first by supporting the evidence-based design in full. Watering down the label through changes to its colour, size or wording, would be risking the health and wellbeing of thousands of Australians for years to come.
