Dillon -iii- Abstract This thesis examines the lives of the convict workers who constituted the primary work force in the Campbell Town district in Van Diemen’s Land during the assignment period but focuses particularly on the 1830s. Over 1000 assigned men and women, ganged government convicts, convict police and ticket holders became the district’s unfree working class. Although studies have been completed on each of the groups separately, especially female convicts and ganged convicts, no holistic studies have investigated how convicts were integrated into a district as its multi-layered working class and the ways this affected their working and leisure lives and their interactions with their employers. Research has paid particular attention to the Lower Court records for 1835 to extract both quantitative data about the management of different groups of convicts, and also to provide more specific narratives about aspects of their work and leisure. -

Francis Grose, Ed.] Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue
A landmark in the lexicography of slang in its first edition [Francis Grose, ed.] Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue. London: S.[Samuel] Hooper, 1785. 8vo, [208] pages. Francis Grose (ca. 1730–1791) was the son of the Swiss jeweler who created the coronation crown of George II. With assistance from his father, Grose (who developed a precocious interest in antiquities) was appointed to be Richmond Herald in the College of Arms, a post he held from 1755 to 1763. After attaining the rank of captain in the military, Grose set out to research and produce drawings for his first book, The Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was commercially successful. Grose’s next work, A Guide to Health, Beauty, Riches, and Honour (1783) contained a collection of contemporary quack advertisements with a satirical preface. In the compilation of his Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, Grose, accompanied by his amanuensis and fellow artist Tom Cocking, collected slang terms during late-night visits to London’s roughest neighborhoods and drinking establishments. Grose went on to author A Provincial Glossary (1787) “with a collection of local proverbs and popular superstitions,” Rules for Drawing Caricatures (1788), The Antiquities of Scotland (1789–91), and A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons (1791). While traveling in Scotland making preparations for The Antiquities of Scotland, Grose made the acquaintance of poet Robert Burns and was subsequently immortalized in Burns’ “Verses on Captain Grose” and “On the late Captain Grose’s Peregrinations.” Francis Grose was a corpulent and convivial person who took great pleasure in food and drink; it is fitting that in 1791, soon after traveling to Dublin to start a book on Irish antiquities, he died at the dinner table (reputedly by choking). -

Nussbaum, Co-Chair This dissertation examines how late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British novelists—major authors, Laurence Sterne and Jane Austen, and lesser-known writers, Pierce Egan, Charles Jenner, and Alexander Bicknell—challenged Henry Fielding’s mid-eighteenth-century critique of caricature as unrealistic and un-novelistic. In this study, I argue that Sterne, Austen, Egan, and others translated visual tropes of caricature into literary form in order to make their comic writings appear more “realistic.” In doing so, these authors not only bridged the character-caricature divide, but a visual- verbal divide as well. As I demonstrate, the desire to connect caricature with character, and the visual with the verbal, grew out of larger ethical and aesthetic concerns regarding the relationship between laughter, sensibility, and novelistic form. ii This study begins with Fielding’s Joseph Andrews (1742) and its antagonistic stance towards caricature and the laughter it evokes, a laughter that both Fielding and William Hogarth portray as detrimental to the knowledge of character and sensibility. My second chapter looks at how, increasingly, in the late eighteenth century tears and laughter were integrated into the sentimental experience. -

Antiquaries in the Age of Romanticism: 1789-1851 Rosemary Hill Queen Mary, University of London Submitted for the degree of PhD March 2011 1 I confirm that the work presented in this thesis and submitted for the degree of PhD is my own. Rosemary Hill 2 Abstract The thesis concentrates on the work of fourteen antiquaries active in the period from the French Revolution to the Great Exhibition in England, Scotland and France. I have used a combination of the antiquaries’ published works, which cover, among other subjects, architecture, topography, costume history, Shakespeare and the history of furniture, alongside their private papers to develop an account of that lived engagement with the past which characterised the romantic period. It ends with the growing professionalistion and specialisation of historical studies in the mid-nineteenth century which left little room for the self-generating, essentially romantic antiquarian enterprise. In so far as this subject has been considered at all it has been in the context of what has come to be called ‘the invention of tradition’. It is true that the romantic engagement with history as narrative led to some elaboration of the facts, while the newness of the enterprise laid it open to mistakes. I have not ignored this. The restoration of the Bayeux Tapestry, the forged tartans of the Sobieski Stuarts and the creation of Shakespeare’s Birthplace are all considered. Overall, however, I have been concerned not to debunk but as it were to ‘rebunk’, to see the antiquaries in their historical context and, as far as possible, in their own terms. -

Southern hemisphere . Some of the papers deal with Irish and Catholic subjects. They are written in a racy and elegant style, and contain an amount of highly nteresting matter relative to our co-religionists and fellow -countrymen under the Southern Cross. Lawrence Mitchell Many lexicographers found some words unsuitable for inclusion in their dictionaries, thus the examination of general purpose dictionaries alone will not give us a faithful history of changes of the language. Nevertheless, by taking into account cant and slang dictionaries, the origins and history of such marginalized language can be truly examined. Despite people‘s natural fascination with these works, the early slang dictionaries have received relatively little scholarly attention, the later ones even less. This dissertation is written to honor those lexicographers who succeeded in a truthful documentation of nonstandard language. One of these disreputable lexicographers who found joy in an unending search for new and better ways of treating abstruse vocabulary was John Camden Hotten. -
Introduction
Introduction In his third Boyer Lecture of November 2009, General Peter Cosgrove, the former Chief of the Australian Defence Force, noted several points on the subject of ‘Leading in Australia’, based on his own forty years of military experience. It was ‘a universal truth’, he said, that leaders ‘are accountable’. ‘Leaders who fail to appreciate this fundamental precept of accountability must also fail to muster the profound commitment true leadership demands’. Furthermore, leadership required a keen understanding of the nature of teamwork, and of the fact that ‘teamwork is adversarial’, whether the team be pitted against another, against the environment or against the standards that the team has set itself. The key to successful leadership is ‘to simply and clearly identify the adversary to the team’ and to overcome the team’s or one’s own shortcomings to forge a cohesive unit united against the adversary. Finally, a leader must be an effective communicator. ‘Communication is the conduit of leadership’, and ‘Leadership uncommunicated is leadership unrequited’. ‘Leadership messages must be direct, simple, [and] fundamentally relevant to each member of the team’.1 While Cosgrove was speaking broadly of contemporary leadership in the military, government and business, his general statements were as applicable to the late eighteenth century as they are today. This thesis examines the subject of leadership in the colony of New South Wales (NSW) for the period 1788 to 1794. The two principal leaders for that period were Captain Arthur Phillip R.N. and Major Francis Grose, the commandant of the New South Wales Corps who assumed command of the colony on Phillip’s departure in December 1792.
