    3 Lag fever, flash men, and late fashionable worlds Clara Tuite Our story starts not in the southern colonies but with a canonical scene of literary expatriation and scandalous celebrity: Lord Byron in Genoa, spend- ing the spring of 1823 with the so-called ‘Blessington circus’, a tight little entourage of idler-adventurers who cast their web across Ireland, England, and continental Europe. The ‘circus’ was named for the Irish author and lit- erary hostess Marguerite Gardiner, Countess of Blessington, and her second husband, Charles John Gardiner, the Earl of Blessington. It also included Blessington’s daughter, Lady Harriet Gardiner, and Alfred, Count D’Orsay – Marguerite’s companion, supposed lover, and surrogate son, supposedly the Earl’s lover as well, and Harriet’s husband for a few years. It was a tangled web they wove. Lady Blessington had a shadowy past. Born Margaret Power in Tipper- ary, she had been married off young by her father, an abusive minor land- owner. Having left her drunken husband, she later became, as she put it, ‘that despised thing, a kept mistress’, excluded from respectable London society even after her marriage to Blessington in 1818.1 In autumn 1821, she met twenty-year-old Alfred, the second son of a general in Napoleon’s Grand Armée. Alfred had taken up a position in the army of the restored Bourbon monarchy, but in 1823 resigned his commission to travel with the Blessing- tons in Italy and France. A spectacularly beautiful Regency Adonis, D’Orsay was known as ‘the king of dandies’, with all the ambiguity that entails: ‘mannish rather than manly’, he was ‘resplendent like a beetle’ and ‘like some gorgeous dragonfly skimming through the air’.2 Representations of D’Orsay often featured him on horseback, as in the background of the 1834 lithograph by the Irish artist Daniel Maclise, published in Fraser’s Magazine (Figure 3.1).

Young adults help furnish mission hospital Wahroonga, New South Wales Seventh-day Adventist hospital on Malaita in the Solomon Islands will receive 24 new beds Athanks to the generosity of six young adults from Fiji. Nathan Vari, an elder at the Fijian Adventist church in Cabramatta, secured the beds from a nursing home in Sydney that has since closed. Dr Lemuel Lecciones, the chief executive officer of Atoifi Adventist Hospital, says he needs the A church beds “because many of ours are falling apart.” One of the Fijian young adults, Nemani Bura, provided his own truck to transport the beds to the South Pacific Division (SPD) office. Stanner On this first inhabited spot, from that time tranquillity ceased, and the foundation of a new country usurped the seat of silence. — The History o f New South Wales, George Barrington, 1810. The Instructions given in 1787 to Captain Arthur Phillip, the Governor-Designate of the intended penal colony in New South Wales, required him ‘by every possible means to open an intercourse’ with the Aborigines. He was ordered to begin barter with them, to estimate their numbers, and to report how association could be turned to the colony’s advantage, but these practical aims were to be attained in a humanitarian way. He must ‘conciliate their affections’, enjoin every­ one to ‘live in amity and kindness with them ’, and punish all who should ‘wantonly destroy them, or give them any unnecessary interrup­ tion in the exercise of their several occupations’. Phillip, before leaving England, thought the instructions entirely possible of performance. He nagged the authorities about scores of matters, but took the racial problems in his stride. I shall think it a great point if I can proceed in this business without having any dispute with the natives, a few of which I shall endeavour to persuade to settle near us, and who I mean to furnish with every­ thing that can tend to civilize them, and to give them a high opinion of their new guests. He even nurtured the hope that he might ‘cultivate an acquaintance with them, without their having an idea of our great superiority over them, that their confidence and friendship might be more firmly fixed’.
