The Nationalists drew their power from China's citizens, but they also subjected them to a regimen of training and control. Petitions from the ``Nanjing decade'' highlight the resulting tensions between government and the governed. Citizens from all walks of life accepted the ruling party's invitation to participate in the construction of the republic. Yet they also used petitions to seek redress when they believed the Nationalists had fallen short of their obligations. These documents mark a turbulent period of transition from imperial rule to representative democracy. They also characterize an era when new political ideas, new media, and new social organizations helped people take an old device and transform it into a useful weapon for asserting their rights as modern citizens. Genre and Empire: Historical Romance and Sixteenth-Century Chinese Cultural Fantasies Abstract Chinese historical romance blossomed and matured in the sixteenth century when the Ming empire was increasingly vulnerable at its borders and its people increasingly curious about exotic cultures. The project analyzes three types of historical romances, i.e., military romances Romance of Northern Song and Romance of the Yang Family Generals on northern Song's campaigns with the Khitans, magic-travel romance Journey to the West about Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India, and a hybrid romance Eunuch Sanbao's Voyages on the Indian Ocean relating to Zheng He's maritime journeys and Japanese piracy. The project focuses on the trope of exogamous desire of foreign princesses and undomestic women to marry Chinese and social elite men, and the trope of cannibalism to discuss how the expansionist and fluid imagined community created by the fiction shared between the narrator and the reader convey sentiments of proto-nationalism, imperialism, and pleasure. -

The Sin Wai-Kin Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Humanities Lecture delivered at The University of Hong Kong on 12 November 2018. China’s South: Changing Perspective* Wang Gungwu When I took my first course in Chinese history, I thought everybody knew where China was and saw the 5,000 years of history of China as straight forward. That was at the National Central University 中央大學 in Nanjing in 1947, where one of the compulsory subjects for first-year students was General History of China, Zhongguo tongshi 中國通史. The three volumes by Miao Fenglin 繆鳳林 covered some 5,000 years down to the 20th century. I also read another three volumes of the Cultural History of China, Zhongguo wenhua shi 中國文化史 by Liu Yizheng 柳詒徵. They were both leading historians of the time and I took for granted that reading these two books was more than enough. It took me sometime to realize how wrong I was. Literature had been my first love and I did not expect to be a historian. After my first year, the civil war was going badly for the Kuomintang and the People’s Liberation Army reached the north banks of the Yangzi. In November 1948, the university was disbanded and I went back to Malaya. A year later, I went to the new University of Malaya in Singapore. Its Arts Faculty was very small and only four subjects were available. For the three-year BA General degree, we did three subjects. I chose English literature and economics. For the third subject, I did not want to take geography and thought that history would be more interesting. -

The Chinese Path to Modernisation Discussions of “Culture” and “Morality” in Republican China Tze-ki Hon HCM 2 (3): 211–228 DOI: 10.1557/HCM2014.3.THON Abstract In this paper, I will examine the notion of “alternative modernity” that was prominent during Republican China. In the first section, I will discuss “the debate on science and the philosophy of life” (1923) and the debate over total westernisation (1935), highlighting the two main areas of contention be- tween the May Fourth intellectuals and their critics: scientism and populism. In the second section, I will compare the writings of four thinkers: Liang Shuming (1893-1988), Wu Mei (1894-1978), Liu Yizheng (1880-1956), and Chen Yinke (1890-1969), focusing on how they used “culture” (wenhua) and “morality” (daode) to chart a Chinese path to modernisation. In the third section, I will discuss the reasons for a lack of support for alternative modernity in Republican China. Keywords: alternative modernity, culture, May Fourth New Culture Movement, morality, westernisation Introduction Of the many momentous events in Republican China (1911-1949), the May Fourth Movement is most important in shaping the contours of modern Chinese intellectual history. Combining three historical episodes – a lan- guage reform to replace classical Chinese with the vernacular (1916-1917), a series of student protests to defend China’s sovereignty against foreign imperialist powers (1919), and a totalistic critique of the Confucian tradi- tion launched by the writers of New Youth magazine (1915-1923), the May Fourth Movement strongly expressed the determination of Chinese intel- VOL. 2, NO. 3, 2014 211 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR HISTORY, CULTURE AND MODERNITY lectuals to rebuild their country based on the European model.1 With the language reform, the May Fourth intellectuals expanded the cultural field such that the production of knowledge was no longer dominated by edu- cated elites steeped in classical learning. -

Iwo Amelung Popularizing science and technology in late Imperial and Early Republican China In this paper I will look into efforts to popularize science and technology during the last years of the Imperial era and during the early Republic. I will show that popularization of science and technology in China began earlier than commonly assumed and already during the last years of the late Imperial era was quite widespread and had a lasting impact on the Chinese perception of the function and power of science. Making use of recent Western approaches to the popularization of science in the 19th and early 20th century (Schwarz, Bayertz etc.), I will try to assess motivation, media, actors and goals of the popularization of science. Specifically I will point out that for early Chinese popularizers “science” almost exclusively was a “Western” affair, and that “traditional” Chinese science during this stage rarely was incorporated into the discourse. As in England or in France some dozen years earlier popularization of science can be viewed as part of a process of societal transformation (or “modernization”). For a newly emerging class of people, who wanted to be “modern” it was fashionable to pose and function as “amateur scientists”. At the same time science and technology was closely linked with desirable goals such as national “wealth and power”. Chinese popularization of science, which during this early period largely took place without the existence of an indigenous group of scientists thus from early on was closely linked to the goal of “national salvation”, an idea, which would remain dominant for many years to come. -

It traces Nanjing Library’s development from its predecessor Jiangnan Library, National Central Library to Nanjing Library, and examines each stage from three perspectives: 1) book collection; 2) service measures and bibliography writings; and 3) consulting service cases and senior experts. It also anticipates Nanjing Library’s reference service in the next 3 to 5 years, observing four trends of development: 1) domestic and foreign cooperation, 2) service for party and government organizations, 3) service for scientific research and production, and 4) new technology and new media application.
