Sunday (May 2, 2021), marks the centenary of Ray, the Indian master who won an honorary Oscar in 1992, shortly before his death, and remains the country’s best known filmmaker internationally. Ray debuted with “Pather Panchali” (1955) the first part of the magisterial Apu Trilogy, which won best human document at Cannes. The Trilogy includes “Aparajito” (1956) and “Apur Sansar” (1959). Berlin was a particularly happy venue for him and he won top awards at the festival numerous times, for “Pather Panchali,” “Aparajito,” “Mahanagar” (1963), “Charulata” (1964), “Nayak” (1966) and “Ashani Sanket” (1973) At Venice he won for “Aparajito” and “Seemabaddha” (1971), culminating in a career Golden Lion in 1982. He also won a British Institute Fellowship in 1983 to go with the London Film Festival’s Sutherland Trophy for “Apur Sansar.” In 1987, the government of France made Ray a Commander of the Legion of Honor. In India, Ray’s films won 36 times at India’s National Film Awards and he was also accorded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest film and civilian awards respectively. The Indian government has newly instituted a Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Cinema, and the country’s various film bodies are organizing year-long centenary celebrations, necessarily virtual-physical hybrids because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. -

Some of Soumitra Chattopadhyay’s memorable works were crafted by none other than Satyajit Ray, whose films received critical acclaim and brought home several prestigious awards worldwide, and put India on the world cinema map. But not many people know Soumitra who passed away on November 15 after his long battle against COVID-19 once appeared as a rival to Ray, his mentor, on the 22 yards! “Soumitra Chattopadhyay was a big admirer of cricket. He, my father Dileep Mukherjee, and Soumendu Roy (Satyajit Ray’s most trusted cinematographer) used to live nearby and were addicted to sports. They would often meet each other to have a game of cricket. Not just the gentleman’s game but also badminton, football. They were sports fanatic and to see them trying their hands in sports was a treat to watch,” recalls former Bengal cricket team all-rounder Joydeep Mukherjee in an exclusive chat with ETimes. Have a close look at this particular photo from the 70s. You can see ahead of a charity match, it’s march past – among others Master Babloo (holding aloft the flag), Satyajit Ray leading the Hemanta Kumar XI, and Jahar Ganguly the captain of Kanan Devi’s XI. While Uttam Kumar walks just behind Satyajit Ray, it was Soumitra Chatterjee who can be seen as Jahar Ganguly’s deputy. -

Many Roads, One Journey There are probably hundreds of streets named for various individuals, some obscure, some noted. There are certainly far more than could ever be included in a single exhibit. What we have tried to do is offer a representative sampling of the diverse and fascinating people and their stories, those who created and developed Los Angeles. Although we say these names almost daily, we never stop to consider where they came from, yet we owe them a debt of gratitude. There are certainly many more, who, for various reasons or no reason at all, are not commemorated in this way. That doesn't make them less important, just not as obvious to the casual observer; but by learning the stories behind street names, we honor their contributions and history. In the early days, as now, people came to Southern California for opportunities which didn't exist elsewhere, due then to the social structure of East Coast Society, which was still rigid and traditional: the lower and middle classes stayed lower and middle class and the upper class treated them both as second class. Even financial success didn't always buy social acceptance. The Nouveau riche—those who made big money in industry or earned money rather than inherited it—might have been tolerated, but they were not considered in the same league as those born with a Silver Spoon. Life—and status—was circumscribed from birth. But in California, and especially Southern California, it was different. Far enough away from class distinctions and restrictions, a man was free to reinvent himself in a society that had no such confines. -

Manoj Kumar to be conferred Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015 By : INVC Team Published On : 4 Mar, 2016 09:30 PM IST INVC NEWS New Delhi, Veteran Film Actor and Director Shri Manoj Kumar is to be conferred the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015. Award is conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The Award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs and a shawl. The Award is given on the basis of recommendations of a Committee of eminent personalities set up by the Government for this purpose. This year, a five member jury viz. Latha Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Salim Khan, Nitin Mukesh and Anup Jalota, unanimously recommended Shri Manoj Kumar for the prestigious Award. Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Shri Arun Jaitley spoke to Shri Manoj Kumar today and congratulated him on being conferred the Award. Shri Manoj Kumar is an Award-winning actor and director. He is remembered for his films Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Upkaar, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and Kranti. He is known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes. Manoj Kumar was born in July 1937, in Abbottabad, then part of Pre- Independent India. When he was 10, he shifted to Delhi. After graduating from Hindu College, University of Delhi, he decided to enter the film industry. After making a début in film Fashion in 1957, Manoj Kumar got his first leading role in Kaanch Ki Gudia in 1960.
