Censor Board revamped

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Cinematograph Act 1952 (37 of 1952) read with rule 3 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 1983, the Central government has appointed Shri Pahlaj Nihalani as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification in an honorary capacity for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Further, In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rulers, 1983, the Central government has appointed the following persons as members of the Central Board of Film Certification with immediate effect for a period of three years and until further orders:- Shri Mihir Bhuta, Prof Syed Abdul Bari, Shri Ramesh Patange, Shri George Baker, Dr. Chandra Prakash, Dwivedi, Ms. Jeevitha, Ms. Vani Tripathi Tikoo, Shri S.Ve. ‘Padma’ Awards announced

The government has announced the ‘Padma’ Awards which are given to personalities for their exemplary contribution to their respective area of work. The awards are announced every year on the eve of the Republic Day. The film personalities who have been honoured this year are;-

The Lunchbox nominated for Bafta

Ritesh Batra’s The Luncbox, starring , and bagged a nomination in the non-English best film category at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. The film, which won widespread international acclaim, following its screening at in 2013, is the only Indian film to be nominated for the Baftas. will be competing against Pawel Pawlikowski’s drama Ida, Russian film Leviathan, Brazilian-British adventure thriller Trash and Belgian movie Two Days One Night in the Film Not in the English Language category. Indian Panorama Film Festival

The Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting organized an Indian Panorama Film Festival at the Siri Fort Auditorium, from January 31-February 8, 2015. The festival is having a public screening of the films screened under the Indian

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the presence of Shri Bimal Julka, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ananth Mehadevan director/actor and Shri , actor were also present on the occasion. 13th Pune International Film Festival

The 13th Pune International Film Festival was held from January 8-15, 2015. The eight day festival was jointly organized by the Pune Film Foundation and the government of . Over 200 films from 75 countries were screened in various sections of the festival. Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu () was the opening film of the festival. There were four competition sections this year. While the World competition had 14 films, the Marathi competition had 7 films. The student competition had two sections: the Animation section had 12 films while the Live Action had 13 films. The Maharashtra Tourism and Development Corporation’s Short Film Competition had three sections: National Heritage, Manmade Heritage and Culture of Maharashtra. There were as many as 81 films in the Global cinema section from 28 countries including Finland, Croatia, Netherlands, , Hungary, France, Serbia, Czech Republic, , Ukraine, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Bosnia, Herzegovina, , Slovenia, , , Iran, Poland, Philippines, Canada, Israel, Latvia, Estonia, Macedonia, Austria, , Brazil, , Angola, Ethiopia, Morocco and Palestine. There was also a Kaleidoscope of films from South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Sweden, China, Taiwan and Denmark. The French Grand Classic section had 11 films of noted directors like: Jean Renoir, Jean 3 Bulletin on Film, January 2015 Luc Godard, Jacques Becker, Julien Duvivier, Robert Bresson, Francois Truffaut, Jean Vigo, Jacques Tali, Marcel Carne, Jacques Demy and Max Ophuls. There were also some war films in the sections: 25 years fall of Berlin wall and 100 years of World War. The Country Focus this year was on Algeria, Brazil and Egypt. Retrospectives of celebrated film makers like Krzysztof Zanussi, Francisco J Lombardi and were organized during the festival and select films of these film personalities were screened. The Indian segment of the festival had contemporary films from across the country including: by , Manjunath by Sandeep A Varma, Njaan by Ranjith, Swapaanam by Shaji N. Karun, Oraalppokkam by , Kuttram Kadithal by Bramma G and Teen Kahon by Bauddhayan Mukherji. A section was devoted to Legends We Remember in which biopics made on K.L. Saigal, , , Rafi, and Soumitra Chatterjee were screened. Tribute was paid to film personalities who passed away recently including: Deven Verma, , , , Smita Talvalkar, Balanathan Benjamin Mahendran and UR Ananthamurthy by screening their select films. Malayalam film actor N. L. Balakrishnan passes away

Malayalam film actor and still photographer, N. L. Balakrishnan passed away in on December 2015. He was 72. A diploma holder in painting, Balakrishnan entered the as still photographer and appeared in major and minor roles in around 100 films. His performance in movies like: Kakkothikkavile Appooppam Thadikal, Pattanapravesham and Joker won him accolades. He was also associated with film makers like G. Aravindan, , and who pioneered the parallel film movement in the state in the 1970’s and 80’s. Screen (2 January 2015; 38)

Telugu comedian Narayana is no more

Versatile Telugu actor M. Narayana passed away on January 23, 2015. He was 63. Narayana was born in Nidamarru, a small village near Bhimavaram. A Telugu lecturer by profession, he tried his luck as a writer in . He penned scripts for 8 Telugu films. He later started working as an actor. M. Dharamaraju MA was his first film as an actor. He became popular with the character of a drunkard in Maa Nannaki Pelli. He never looked back after this. Narayana acted in over 700 films in his career. His recent and successful films as a comedian include ’s last film Manam, Jr. NTR starrer Badshah, starrer and starrer among others. He won the Nandi Award for Best Comedian as many as five times. V.S. Raghavan dead

Veteran film and theatre actor V.S. Raghavan passed away on January 24, 2015. He was 90. The actor began his career with Vairamala in 1954. Some of his memorable roles were in films directed by K. Balachander. His role in Iru Kodugal, where he played a father with negative shades earned him critical acclaim as did his role as Anglo- Indian dad in Nookrukku Nooru. He starred in popular films such as: Kadhalikka Neramillai Pattanathil Bootham and Urimai Kural and Idharkunthane Aasaipattai Balakumar..In all, he had acted in more than 1000 films in his long career. Baby Shakuntla passes away

Well known actress Baby Shakuntla passed away in Kolhapur on January 16, 2015. She was 82. Better known as Baby Shakuntla, Umadevi Nadgonde started acting when she was only 6. Her first film as an actor was Daha Vajata. She had acted in almost 60 Marathi and films and had worked with stalwarts of her time like , Anant Mane, Dinkar D. Patil, and B.R. Chopra. Ahuti Prasad dead

Popular Telugu actor Ahuti Prasad known for his comic and character roles passed away in Hyderbad on January 4, 2015. He was 57. 9 Bulletin on Film, January 2015 Born A Janardhana Prasad, he came to be known as Ahuti Prasad for his much acclaimed performance as villain in the film Ahuti in 1980’s The actor had played negative roles during the early years of his career in the 1980’s but gaimed prominence as a character artiste later on. His role as father to actress Tabu in Nargarjuna starrer Nine Pella won him much appreciation. His roles as a father in several films also fetched him critical acclaim. Ganesh Patro passes away

Telugu playwright, script and dialogue writer, Patro passed away on January 5, 2015. He was 69. Born in 1945, Patro did his schooling in Parvathipuram. He later shifted to and then to Chennai. Atha Varillu was his debut film as a writer. He is known for all time hits like the Kamalhaasan, Sarita starrer Maro Charitra and Idhi Katha Kaadu and Rudraveena both starring . In an active drama/film writing career that spanned over four decades, Patro came to be known as a close associate of K. Balachander, writing the dialogues for almost all his film in Telugu. The way be would bring the Telugu nativity for even a typical Tamil story was what set him in a class of his own. His last Telugu film as a writer was the Mahesh Babu- starrer Seetamma Vaakitlo Srimalle Chettu. Patro received regional and national awards for films like: Swathi, Mayuri, Seetharamayya Gari Manavaralu, Aakali Raajyam and Chilakamma Cheppindi. Film star Som Dutt, younger brother of actor Dutt passed away in January 4, 2015. He was 77. Som Dutt had acted in 22 films and two of his films Man Ka Meet and Nanak Naam Jahaz bagged the national awards in 1969. Of late, he was leading a retired life in his native village Mandoli near Yamunanagar.

Birth centenary of actor Honnappa Bhagavathar celebrated

The Karanataka Chalanchitra Academy organized a two day event to observe the birth centenary of renowned singer and actor C. Honnappa Bhagavathar. Besides a photo exhibition showing moments from the Bhagvathar’s films, three of his best –known films were also screened including: Mahakavi Kalidasa, Pancharatna and Jagajyothi.
