Writers and Creative Advisors Selected for Drishyam | Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in Udaipur, India April 48 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media contacts: March 23, 2016 Chalena Cadenas 310.360.1981 [email protected] Mauli Singh [email protected] Writers and Creative Advisors Selected for Drishyam | Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in Udaipur, India April 48 Lab Recognizes and Supports Six Emerging Independent Filmmakers from India Los Angeles, CA — Sundance Institute and Drishyam Films today announced the artists and creative advisors selected for the second Drishyam | Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in Udaipur, India April 48. The Lab supports emerging filmmakers in India, as part of the Institute’s sustained commitment to international artists, which in the last 25 years has included programs in Brazil, Mexico, Jordan, Turkey, Japan, Cuba, Israel and Central Europe. Now in its second year, the fourday Lab is a creative and strategic partnership between Drishyam Films and Sundance Institute, and gives independent screenwriters the opportunity to work intensively on their feature film scripts in an environment that encourages innovation and creative risktaking. The Lab is centered around oneonone story sessions with creative advisors. Screenwriting fellows engage in an artistically rigorous process that offers lessons in craft, a fresh perspective on their work and a platform to fully realize their material. Leading the Lab in India is Drishyam founder, Manish Mundra. He said, “A beautiful heritage city in my hometown of Rajasthan, Udaipur forms an ideal writers retreat, and is the perfect environment for a diverse group of emerging writers and renowned mentors to have a refreshing and productive exchange. Our goal is that the six selected Indian projects, after undergoing a comprehensive mentoring process, will quickly move from script to screen and make their mark globally. All six projects harbor immense potential, and the success they go on to achieve and the distribution channels they open up for more independent Indian films will be the fittest tribute to this joint initiative, driven by passion and pure love for cinema.” Paul Federbush, International Director of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, said, “We are excited to collaborate with Drishyam Films for the second year of the Screenwriters Lab. This partnership allows us to continue discovering and developing new and exciting voices in India. With experimentation and exchange at the core of our work, we hope to inspire an exciting new generation of independent film.” Creative advisors for this year’s Lab represent a diverse mix of Indian and international filmmakers, including: Thomas Bidegain (A Prophet, Dheepan, Rust and Bone), Pubali Choudhari (Kai Po Che!), Naomi Foner (Running on Empty, Losing Isaiah), Malia Scotch Marmo (Hook, Once Around, Good Morning Karachi), Rose Troche (Go Fish, The Safety of Objects, The L Word), , and Prasanna Vithanage (With You, Without You). 2 The Institute has enthusiastically supported independent cinema in India at all stages of production through its Screenwriters Labs in India and Utah, the Sundance Institute Global Filmmaking Award, as well as targeted postproduction grants. Recently completed films supported by the Institute include: Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox, winner of the Grand Rail d’Or at its premiere at Cannes, Shonali Bose’s Margarita With A Straw, winner of the NETPAC award at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival and Masaan by writerdirector Neeraj Ghaywan, winner of the FIPRESCI and Promising Debut Feature award in the Un Certain Regard at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Baghawad Gita, Class 184: Chapter 14, Verses 19 to 14 Shloka # 14. 9: 14.9 O scion of the Bharata dynasty, sattva attaches one to happiness, rajas to action, while tamas, covering up knowledge, leads to inadvertence als Continuing his teachings Swamiji said today, in the last few classes, we saw that our higher nature known as the sakshi svarupam is ever nirgunam and therefore is free from the influence of the three gunas; but our vyavaharika nature, our lower nature, which is called ahamkara is a mixture of the body-mind complex, as well as the reflected consciousness. And till the ahamkara consists of the body-mind complex and till the body-mind complex is born out of prakrti, the ahamkara can never escape from the three gunas. And therefore, our body-mind complex is made up of three gunas and the ahamkara which consists of this body-mind complex is the necessarily made up of these three gunas, and therefore, we can never escape from them. We have to live with this saguna ahamkara. And once we are forced to live with this ahamkara, it is better that we understand the ahamkara well, so that we know how to handle it properly. Science is able to handle the nature more and more only because science has been able to know nature more and more. Knowledge gives the capacity for better handling. And therefore Sri Krishna says: you have to understand your own ahamkara very well. For that, you must know what type of ahamkara you have; which guna is dominant, which guna is in middle; the second place, and which guna is the lowest; better you understand and you also know how these gunas influence your vyavaharika life; both material life, as well as the spiritual life.

The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

  • The Hindu, the Muslim, and the Border In
THE HINDU, THE MUSLIM, AND THE BORDER IN NATIONALIST SOUTH ASIAN CINEMA Vinay Lal University of California, Los Angeles Abstract There is but no question that we can speak about the emergence of the (usually Pakistani or Muslim) ‘terrorist’ figure in many Bollywood films, and likewise there is the indisputable fact of the rise of Hindu nationalism in the political and public sphere. Indian cinema, however, may also be viewed in the backdrop of political developments in Pakistan, where the project of Islamicization can be dated to least the late 1970s and where the turn to a Wahhabi-inspired version of Islam is unmistakable. I argue that the recent history of Pa- kistan must be seen as instigated by a disavowal of the country’s Indic self, and similarly I suggest that scholarly and popular studies of the ‘representation’ of the Muslim in “Bol- lywood” rather too easily assume that such a figure is always the product of caricature and stereotyping. But the border between Pakistan and India, between the self and the other, and the Hindu and the Muslim is rather more porous than we have imagined, and I close with hints at what it means to both retain and subvert the border.

Women Journalists in Hindi Films: Stereotyping the stereotypes | Saswat.com | All That's ... Page 1 of 5 Saswat.com All That's Left Blog :: Saswat Pattanayak Home Articles Links Poetry FAQ About Index Women Journalists in Hindi Films: Stereotyping the stereotypes Subscribe to Saswat Blog By Saswat Pattanayak Literature Review: Not just the films themselves, the writings on the portrayal of women in popular Hindi films have too, long been dictated by assigning extremes—the woman’s prerogatives to belong to a side, of the evil or the virtuous, the vamp or the Madonna. Most authorship have evolved with historical representation of women in Bollywood to lead a discourse on the idealized women figures. Virdi (2003) justifies most studies as the “necessary first step” for providing a rich and abundant characterization of the idealized women figures: passive, victimized, sacrificial, submissive, glorified, static, one-dimensional, and resilient. And then, in her own work, she goes no further than the “first step”, by limiting to content-analysis of three films to study the women representation. Hindi cinema has been a major point of reference for Indian culture in this century. It has shaped and expressed the changing scenarios of modern India to an extent that no preceding art form could ever achieve. And yet, the diversity in roles that women play is not aptly brought to examination either by the post colonial discoursers or the film studies intelligentsia. Gopalan (2000) leads discussion on the avenging women in Indian cinema. She argues that discussions of violence have to consider how films replete with avenging women, gangsters, brutal police force and vigilante closures stage some of the most volatile struggles over representations that shape the public and private fantasies of national, communal, regional and sexual identities.
