Received: June 23 , 2018 Accepted: August 03, 2018 Introduction: Cinephilia Cineastes say that films help the audience to reflect on the divergent cultures and justify the presence of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic audience in view of this divergence. The language of cinema continues to evolve in a living tradition and the filmmakers trace the ever-changing language of this medium from the silent era to the talkies, from the days when screen went from black and white and got colorized. Emotional appeal, subtlety in its communication and most importantly throwing a new light on the world, as we know it counted a lot to the audience. Filmmakers now work across the spectrum of media including painting, novels, theatre and opera. In the global cinema, in general, the production has become more accessible today, the qualitative aspects have sadly given way to quantity and so, films often miss emotional and spiritual richness. The world is a closer place today. Perhaps it is cinema that helps to blur the boundaries. The concept of film as a commercial art form started in fifties. The fifties and sixties are generally known as the golden period of Indian cinema not only because masterpieces were being made, but because of the popularity of the songs of that era. One of the distinctive features of Indian cinema is its narrative structure. -

Sujan Mukhopadhyay’S DON…TAKE BHALO LAGE Adaptation & Direction: Sujan Mukhopadhyay Group: Chetana, Kolkata Language: Bengali Duration: 2 hrs 25 mins The Play Renowned poet, theatre director, and actor Subhomoy Dutt, has been arrested for his outrageous comments against the state, and locked in custody with other petty convicts. Subhomoy transforms the jail into a stage and starts performing the story of the ‘Mad Knight’ Don Quixote, with all the jail inmates as performers. The prison cell metamorphoses into a space of eloquent metaphors and bizarre events of Don and his mate, Sancho. Adapted into a modern day situation, this musical carnival emerges with forms like Kirtan, Flamenco, Rabindranath’s song, Rock-N-Roll, Toppa and Western Classical. Director’s Note “To dream, the impossible dream”… has been the quest of Don Quixote, and his squire Sancho Panza. The play begins in a local prison, where a famous playwright, actor and poet, Subhamoy Dutt, is arrested for his illegal step towards the state through his propagandist play. I wish to study today’s terror and ill-tolerance in this “play within the play” through the local jail inmates, who are waiting for their verdict. Designed as an opera, this is a hard hitting musical, questioning our reality, and arguing our existence in the modern socio-cultural situation. The Director & Adapter Sujan Mukhopadhyay has acted in about 30 plays and written several scripts for theatre, television and cinema. He was awarded with Stagecraft award for Ghasiram Kotwal and Popular Viewer’s Choice Award for Don..Take Bhalo Lage. He has performed in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Chennai and all the other cities of India, and major cities of the USA, Theatre Olympics in Agartala, and Bharat Rang Mahotsav. -

We felt that if we, the practitioners should sit down and talk about the various issues that are bothering us, we may be able to solve some of the problems and several issues may be resolved. Often it so happens that the artists take one side and the critics-audience occupies the other. There is a clear division – one group which creates and the other who criticizes. Many a time this proves to be useful and necessary as well. -

In 1957, we saw the creation of classic Telugu film Maya Bazar. Fifty years later, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of Maya Bazar, the magic is Ibeing recreated with animation film Ghatothkach, the latest from the Singeetam Srinivasa Rao stable (Mayuri, Aditya 369, Bhairava Dweepam, Pushpak, Son Of Alladin) and produced by Hyderabad-based Sun Animatics (Rao is the Chairman). With a mix of classic & CGI animation, the 100- minute Ghatothkach is being done in Hindi & English with voice track in five Indian lan- guages -– Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali. The Rs 15-crore film, cur- rently under post production (at Digiquest and other studios), is slated for release in April-May 2007. The production work of the film was done at Philippines, Singapore and United Kingdom. Owell Mina is the animation director (The Legend of the Dragon, Little Amadeus) and the story board director is Danny Mila Miles (The Legend of Zorro). “The animated film portrays the operations in Philippines and the USA. When that happens the Third Theatre (in the context I have used it) will no longer have a separate function, but will merge with a transformed First Theatre. —Badal Sircar, 23 November 1981 (1982:58) It is impossible to discuss the history of modern Indian theatre and not en- counter the name of Badal Sircar. Yet one seldom hears his current work talked of in the present. How is it that one of the greatest names, associated with an exemplary body of dramatic work, gets so easily lost in a haze of present-day ignorance? While much of his previous work is reverentially can- onized, his present contributions are less well known and seldom acknowl- edged. It was this slippage I set out to examine. I expected to find an ailing man reminiscing of past glories. I was warned that I might find a cynical per- son, an incorrigible skeptic weary of the world. Instead, I encountered an in- domitable spirit walking along his life path looking resolutely ahead. A kind old man who drew me a map to his house and saved tea for me in a thermos. A theatre person extraordinaire recounting his latest workshop in Laos, devis- ing how to return as soon as possible.
