Dear Ms. Kaviq Kaluraq,

We request NIRB to allow Uvagut TV to rebroadcast the NIRB Phase 2 Mary River Baffinland expansion hearings broadcast live January 25–Feb 6, so Inuit can review these before the next round of hearings starting April 12.

It’s our understanding that many community members in Igloolik were unable to view the hearings because of a fire at the Coop which shut down Igloolik cable TV. As well, live broadcasts during the working days made it difficult for many employed Inuit throughout Nunavut to watch the original broadcasts. Rebroadcasts in the evenings and overnight on Uvagut TV will allow anyone who missed the original broadcasts to watch after hours.

Community representatives invited to appear in the April Community Roundtable will benefit from reviewing what was said in the last round. Allowing Uvagut TV to rebroadcast the hearings will contribute to informed discussions during those hearings.

Lastly, freedom of the press is a foundation of our democracy. Preventing the open and free broadcast of the hearings is counter to that basic right. Rebroadcasting the hearings can only lead to positive outcomes and more effective management of the Mary River project.
