Welcome Mark Mallory, UW’s Canada Fulbright Visiting Chair in Arctic Studies! Mark Mallory, Canada Research Chair in Coastal Ecosystems and Professor at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, joined the University of Washington in January 2018 as the new Canada Fulbright Visiting Chair in Arctic Studies. Welcome Emily Schierling, Center’s New Corbett Canadian Studies Program Manager! Emily Schierling is the new Corbett Canadian Studies Program Manager. She is excited to build a vibrant and robust study abroad fellowship through the Corbett British Columbia–Washington International Exchange Program. Aliated Faculty Awarded Fellowship Aliated faculty, Katie Bunn-Marcuse, received a National Endowment for the Humanities-Mellon Fellowship for Digital Publication, for her project centered in the Kwagiulth First Nation entitled, "A Collaborative Reframing of Franz Boas's Documentation of the Kwakiutl First Nation in 1930." Indigenous Inuence in Arctic Aairs Video Series This past quarter, the Center, with other Title VI centers in the Jackson School – Ellison Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies, Center for West European Studies, East Asia Center, Center for Global Studies – produced a series of educational videos on Arctic Indigenous leadership. UW graduate students, including U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies Program Fellows, conducted interviews using their growing language skills. The videos provide valuable insights in to Indigenous inuence in the Arctic today. Mark Mallory, 2017–18 UW Canada Fulbright Visiting Chair in Arctic Studies, works in Nunavut, a territory in Arctic Canada, where his work has ranged from censusing and tracking birds to examining contamination of wildlife and soils, to collecting snow to examine mercury ux at -54°. Funding Opportunities/Call for Papers Call for Papers/Panels – American Council for Québec Studies / Le 21e colloque bisannuel de l’ACQS: The 21st biennial conference of the American Council for Québec Studies (ACQS), November 1–4, 2018 will be held at the Intercontinental New Orleans, Louisiana. Proposals considered will be related to any aspect of Québec studies. Consult I'ACQS website for more details on the conference. All submissions (abstracts of +/-250 words) are made via the ACQS website. Conference presentations can be made in French or English. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is April 1, 2018. Call for Papers – Canadian Holocaust Literature, Charting the Field: The Department of English at Ryerson University, the Vered Jewish Canadian Studies Program at the University of Ottawa, the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies, Library and Archives Canada present the Canadian Holocaust Literature conference, to be held at Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, on Sunday, October 28, 2018. Proposals of 250 words, along with a 50-word biography, should be submitted electronically by June 15, 2018 to Rebecca Margolis: [email protected]. More information.
