Iniezioneiniezione the Newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club IniezioneIniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Words by Fred Russell Chili Sulla Spiaggia Photos by Gordy Hyde The driveway and parking area around Fred Wright and Kathy Lombardo’s wonderful home outside of Olympia had more Alfa Romeos than ever before. As I pulled in with my Sport Sedan, I saw another Alfetta Sedan, 2 Milanos, and a 164. Counting the other non-Alfas there were at least 7 more cars including Fiat 500s, Miatas, and more. All these cars had arrived carrying people, chili, and cornbread for the annual NWARC Chili CookOff & Cornbread Contest. The home is located on a beach along the eastern shore of Totten Inlet. The area used to be the stomping grounds of the Squaxon tribe that lived just north of the inlet near the current town of Allyn. On the 25th of May, 1792, the area was explored by Peter Puget as part of the Vancouver Expedition. During his visit to Totten Inlet, he noted “… we found abundance of small oysters. In this [inlet] were many beautiful spots. The low surrounding country, though thickly covered with wood, had a very pleasant appearance.” I’d say we agree since it was equally pleasant for NWARC, and experts note that the nutrient rich inlet pro- duces some of the best oysters found anywhere. The club’s history visiting this location is a little shorter, but equally as notewor- thy. Fred & Kathy have hosted this for a few years but each one has become more crowded than the previous. This year, we had 10 different entries in the Chili CookOff. They arrived in crock pots, or cooking pots, and even one pot that Heidi Gordon brought with cool metal clips keeping the top securely fastened. Each one was assigned a number for judging by the two designates; Gordy Hyde and Joe Faherty. Their tough job was to taste each of the 10 chili offerings and make a choice of winner. That is a tough job since each of the 10 was very good, Inside this March 2013 issue… * Chili CookOff ………... pgs 1-3 * News ……………….….……. pg 7 * President’s Column ….... pg 4 * Restoring An Alfa …….… pg 8 Next club event… * March Club Meeting ….…pg 5 * The Art of Meeting …….. pg 9 * Club Meeting Saturday, March 16 * Coming Events ……..…... pg 6 * Classifieds ……….. pgs 10,11 * Membership ……….....….. pg 6 * Calendar ……………….… pg 12 Chili cont’d… as well as very different in taste and tex- ture. Both judges have won the CookOff before so they’re up to the task. The Cornbread Contest had fewer entries, but the 4 choices awaited the judges. Gordy and Joe made their way through samples of each one. During the judging, the rest of us… and that means around 20 people, enjoyed lots of conversation, throwing a softball, wandering the beach or trails, or hanging around the garage. There were plenty of options. The Daytona 500 was on the TiVo so we could watch live, or catch up on whatever we missed. When given permission by the judges to start eating, we didn’t argue. Some of the chili had just meat, where oth- ers included beans. One was the Chili Verde and lived up to it’s name with a nice green coloring. The amount of “kick” varied as much as the flavors. The cornbread came in differing ways from thick cornbread in square pans to thin versions in round pans. Finally the cornbread and chili judging was completed using tradi- tional rules like No Beans, richness of color, heat, taste, and texture. The award for #1 Chili went to Tony & Debi Schmid. There was also an award for the Most Original chili given to Tracey & Dave King- stone. When it came to cornbread, the prize for #1 went to Jane Emerson. The prizes were the generosity of our Hosts and were bot- tles of champagne! After eating and awards, Fred W. lead us on a walk down along the beach where we could see the oyster beds and the Taylor Seafoods shellfish farming in the distance. We saw the tidal areas, ponds, downed trees and plenty of birds. Returning to the house we watched the rest of the Daytona 500 and enjoyed a a wonderful af- ternoon. It was a great event and appreciation goes out to all who joined in as well as our hosts! NWARC March 2013 newsletter page 2 Chili cont’d... And then there was … I’m going to say inspiration for these guys here, and that’s Rob Parish (Cooper’s Dad). He’s an Alfa fan from way back having owned a 1971 GTV 1750, a Milano, an Alfetta GT and now a 78 Sports Sedan. Rob told me he liked the way Alfas seemed to be engineered to take out on to race tracks should one see fit. And Rob is a dedicated Alfisti as he told me about his Sport Sedan’s engine dropping an exhaust valve seat something like four days before the CookOff. He had another head, performed the swap and had his Alfa Ro- meo there that Sunday. Impressive to say the least. Selling Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Lancia Parts Since 1971 I’ll add two more to their merry band, and that would be Diane Salguero, Miguel’s mom and Serena (darn, I didn’t get her last name) the hired hand at Diane and Rob’s FREE CATALOG marine business. Both these two were great to have at the Chili CookOff and looked to be ready to embrace our 1-800-788-4435 unique cars. Thanks for being a part of our Sunday la- dies and I hope to see all of you at another club event in www.international-auto.com the near future. Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.

  • Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Unveils
Contact: Ariel Gavilan Ron Kiino Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Formula One Team Unveils the New C41 February 22, 2021, Auburn Hills, Mich. - A ceremony in the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, Poland, saw the attendance of a limited number of senior personnel from the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Formula One team – with media, fans and employees being invited to watch virtually in respect of the local COVID-19 regulations. Team drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi and reserve driver Robert Kubica entered the stage as the C41, in a striking new livery, was shown for the first time. Featuring a new color scheme designed by Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile and featuring the now traditional red and white colors of the team, the car, designed under the coordination of Technical Director Jan Monchaux, represents an evolution of the C39 that competed in the 2020 season. Owing to the restrictions imposed by the regulations, the car carries over many of the components of its predecessor, while still standing out with its renewed appearance, in particular in regard to the nosecone, an area on which the team chose to focus its development tokens. Under the bodywork lies a new Ferrari engine, ready to rev in less than a week when the team embarks on a new season with the C41’s shakedown in Barcelona on Friday. The Alfa Romeo logo is flanked by the Quadrifoglio (four-leaf clover) traditionally associated with Alfa Romeo’s racing efforts, and the logo of Autodelta, the brand’s legendary racing team. These logos adorn the bodywork, contributing to the creation of one of the standout cars on the grid – a classic design that embodies the passion and tradition of the marques it represents.

The Ex-Adrea de Cesaris 1982 Alfa Romeo 182 Chassis No. N182/1 • A genuine Works ‘ground effect’ Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car, carrying arguably the most iconic of all racing liveries. • One of the first Formula 1 cars to utilise the strength advantages of a fully carbon fibre tub. • Driven to pole position at the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix by Andrea de Cesaris. • In its current ownership for the last 15 years and the previous for 10 years before that. • Wonderfully original and a highly desirable and blue chip entry to the popular world of Historic F1. Alfa Romeo returned to Formula 1 in 1979 after a 28 year sabbatical with the 177 which was designed and built under Carlo Chiti at Autodelta. Soon the 177 was replaced with the much improved 179 which gained the backing of cigarette giant Marlboro. The 179 was developed over a period of three seasons, which included flashes of promise such as a pair of pole positions and Bruno Giacomelli and 2nd at the 1980 Australian Grand Prix. Hungry to push forward and in a bid to do better, Alfa Romeo gained the services of Ligier designer Gérard Ducarouge in 1981 and the 182 was bourn. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. Ducarouge persuaded the Turinese team to embrace carbon fibre technology in the production of its 1982 chassis, the 182 and at the beginning of the 1982 season only Alfa Romeo and McLaren were capitalising on the advantages of using carbon fibre. The monocoque’s design was largely similar to the aluminium 179, but instead was constructed entirely in carbon fibre by Advanced Composites in Derby, England.
