The driveway and parking area around Fred Wright and Kathy Lombardo’s wonderful home outside of Olympia had more Alfa Romeos than ever before. As I pulled in with my Sport Sedan, I saw another Alfetta Sedan, 2 Milanos, and a 164. Counting the other non-Alfas there were at least 7 more including Fiat 500s, Miatas, and more. All these cars had arrived carrying people, chili, and cornbread for the annual NWARC Chili CookOff & Cornbread Contest. The home is located on a beach along the eastern shore of Totten Inlet. The area used to be the stomping grounds of the Squaxon tribe that lived just north of the inlet near the current town of Allyn. On the 25th of May, 1792, the area was explored by Peter Puget as part of the Vancouver Expedition. During his visit to Totten Inlet, he noted “… we found abundance of small oysters. In this [inlet] were many beautiful spots. The low surrounding country, though thickly covered with wood, had a very pleasant appearance.” I’d say we agree since it was equally pleasant for NWARC, and experts note that the nutrient rich inlet pro- duces some of the best oysters found anywhere. The club’s history visiting this location is a little shorter, but equally as notewor- thy. Fred & Kathy have hosted this for a few years but each one has become more crowded than the previous. This year, we had 10 different entries in the Chili CookOff. They arrived in crock pots, or cooking pots, and even one pot that Heidi Gordon brought with cool metal clips keeping the top securely fastened. Each one was assigned a number for judging by the two designates; Gordy Hyde and Joe Faherty. Their tough job was to taste each of the 10 chili offerings and make a choice of winner. That is a tough job since each of the 10 was very good, Inside this March 2013 issue…

as well as very different in taste and tex- ture. Both judges have won the CookOff before so they’re up to the task. The Cornbread Contest had fewer entries, but the 4 choices awaited the judges. Gordy and Joe made their way through samples of each one. During the judging, the rest of us… and that means around 20 people, enjoyed lots of conversation, throwing a softball, wandering the beach or trails, or hanging around the garage. There were plenty of options. The Daytona 500 was on the TiVo so we could watch live, or catch up on whatever we missed. When given permission by the judges to start eating, we didn’t argue. Some of the chili had just meat, where oth- ers included beans. One was the Chili Verde and lived up to it’s name with a nice green coloring. The amount of “kick” varied as much as the flavors. The cornbread came in differing ways from thick cornbread in square pans to thin versions in round pans. Finally the cornbread and chili judging was completed using tradi- tional rules like No Beans, richness of color, heat, taste, and texture. The award for #1 Chili went to Tony & Debi Schmid. There was also an award for the Most Original chili given to Tracey & Dave King- stone. When it came to cornbread, the prize for #1 went to Jane Emerson. The prizes were the generosity of our Hosts and were bot- tles of champagne! After eating and awards, Fred W. lead us on a walk down along the beach where we could see the oyster beds and the Taylor Seafoods shellfish farming in the distance. We saw the tidal areas, ponds, downed trees and plenty of birds. Returning to the house we watched the rest of the Daytona 500 and enjoyed a a wonderful af- ternoon. It was a great event and appreciation goes out to all who joined in as well as our hosts!

And then there was … I’m going to say inspiration for these guys here, and that’s Rob Parish (Cooper’s Dad). He’s an Alfa fan from way back having owned a 1971 GTV 1750, a Milano, an Alfetta GT and now a 78 Sports Sedan. Rob told me he liked the way Alfas seemed to be engineered to take out on to race tracks should one see fit. And Rob is a dedicated Alfisti as he told me about his Sport Sedan’s engine dropping an exhaust valve seat something like four days before the CookOff. He had another head, performed the swap and had his Alfa Ro- meo there that Sunday. Impressive to say the least. Selling Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Lancia Parts Since 1971 I’ll add two more to their merry band, and that would be Diane Salguero, Miguel’s mom and Serena (darn, I didn’t get her last name) the hired hand at Diane and Rob’s FREE CATALOG marine business. Both these two were great to have at the Chili CookOff and looked to be ready to embrace our 1-800-788-4435 unique cars. Thanks for being a part of our Sunday la- dies and I hope to see all of you at another club event in www.international-auto.com the near future. Glad I cleaned up my Milano; it had to stand with the cars from this crowd.

Got Green? St Paddy’s Party March 23rd You’d think the Faherty’s would learn, but clearly they haven’t. Once again Joe & Lynn have invited the members of NWARC back to their wonderful home on Fox Island for a wee bit o’ the Irish. The 2013 St Paddy’s Party will be held on March 23rd. The best deal is to aim to arrive early… say 4 PM. This way you get to enjoy the nice scenery along the way, as well as arrive early enough to take a nice walk on the beach. The festivities start around 5:30 PM. Plan to bring a side dish to share, while you are sam- pling the rest of the great food & drink. Each year the food and friends is outstanding! Rain or shine, make sure you attend! The address: 768 6th Ave Fox Island, WA 98333 (For estimating your time, this location is about 30 minutes drive after crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.) Map your route via Google or Bing first then once you get to the location on Fox Island, follow the gravel drive until it starts downhill and you’ll find the house on your left. Call 253 549 2082 if you are having a challenge finding the party.

March Alfa News Autoclassica Milano was held February 22-24 in Milan. TZ This event was a show for motoring fans, professionals and anyone wanting a close look at the world of vintage cars. Alfa Romeo is regular partner at this annual show. For 2013, their event booth held 5 vintage cars (plus one new Giulietta) focused on the 50th anniversary of the creation of Autodelta, Alfa Romeo’s racing side starting in 1963. Since the 5 cars came from the Museo Alfa Romeo, this GTA Jr. may be the only way the public can enjoy some of Tipo 33.2 the cars in the Alfa Romeo collection while we wait for Fiat / Alfa Romeo to pull their collective heads out of their… you know what, and re-open the Museo Alfa Romeo. Meanwhile, back at the Autoclassica, the 5 Alfa Romeos were all significant products from Autodelta starting with the lightweight and fast ‘63 33 TT 12 TZ. They also had the ‘67 Tipo 33.2, the 2 liter quad cam V8 powered mid engine car producing 270 HP they used to win their class at Daytona as well as the . Locally, Greg Whitten used to have a long tail version of the Tipo 33.2 that had been raced at both Le Mans and Sebring. These cars lead to the creation of the rare and stun- ning Stradale 33. Though related, the 33 TT 12 was also displayed allowing a per- son the chance to see how different they really are. Mid-engined using a 3 liter 12 179 F1 Car cyl boxer mated to a unique sitting in an all new frame design, these cars won numerous races and championships. Sitting next to these was the amaz- ing ‘68 GTA Jr. This was the car that Autodelta squeezed 170 HP out of the sturdy 1290 cc engines. The last Autodelta car at the show was the development car for the Alfa 179 F1 car of 1980. This fun car was an early adopter of Carbon Fiber construction. All of these cars were produced by the great and his crew at the legendary, Autodelta. Happy 50th, Autodelta! Starting on March 7th is the Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland. On display will be the Alfa Romeo Gloria Sports Coupe; a design collaboration between Alfa Romeo and 20 students at the European De- sign Institute of Turin. Alfa Romeo tasked the studious designers with coming up with a sedan tailored specifically to Asian and American tastes. It features a few trademark Alfa design cues. The leather straps (odd and ugly in my opinion) on the bonnet have embossed Alfa Romeo cloverleaf logos and are reminiscent to cars like the 6C1750. The Gloria has a long 114.2-inch , 185-inch overall length, 75.6 inch width, while only 52 inches overall height. It rides on 20-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels also designed by the students. The press release Alfa Romeo Gloria states that the Gloria would be powered by either a V-6 or a twin-turbo V-8 en- gine. Also on display will be three special editions of the European Giulietta. They are showing off the Veloce, Sportiva, and Quadrifolio Verde versions, but unfortunately, they are all simply trim levels. Sadly, the only one with any muscle behind the name is the Verde which is only available with the 235 HP engine.

Speaking of new Alfa Romeos, here is an image of one of the new 4C on the side of the road. Did it break down? Swerve to miss a Russian meteorite? I don’t know, so I’ll just assume the driver found some ice and ended up in the wrong place. 4C on the side of the road.

Restoring An Alfa Help Wanted In the spring of 2011, I wound up with a 1971 S2 Spider, which I mistakenly thought was “nice”. It was my first “old car” purchase. My first Alfa. I was naïve and my checkbook regrets my naivety. Trouble is, I like the car. I’m going to “bring it back”, doing everything I can here at home, then farming out the rest. The goal is to have a VERY nice driver. A totally dependable car, that looks good “up close”, as well! I’m told that “restoration” means “as it was built”. So, I’ll be doing a quality “refurbishment”. As usual, both the floor pans, and rockers are bad. Not impossible, but bad. Also as usual, there are places around the bottom where magnets don’t stick very well. At some point, a new left front fender was installed with little-or-no attention to fit, or existing lines of the car. Also, with the front bumpers removed, the car has a quite lopsided grin because of the lower nose/fender matchup. Literally “handfuls” of bondo there. Most likely, the fender needs removal, for a fresh start. Rear half of the car, not bad! Basically, the car will be completely stripped of all equipment, then the body will get an abrasive blast and primer/sealer application. All rust areas will be weld repaired and sheet metal irregularities fixed. There may be a few upgrades, such as a better fuse panel, three-point seat belts, euro-style front side markers, etc… ???. Problem is, I’ve never actually taken on such a job. I’m no stranger to tools, and I have a shop/place to work. (No lift). So many unknowns, so many questions. Once a rocker is properly repaired, what modern techniques and prod- ucts can be used to hold off/delay future rusting? Where does a guy locate the many and varied insulation col- ors used in a wire harness (in affordable quantities)? I DID locate a source for decals! The engine and tranny are complete unknowns at this point. We DO know that the Spica was diluting the oil with gasoline. (Thanks to Wes and Herb, the Spica pump, and injectors are now finished). Did the crank bearings get damaged? Engine will come apart for inspection, at the very least, as will the trans. (No point in re-installing a potential 2nd gear “crunch”). Given the interest in cars of this type, I can’t possibly be the only guy who has, or is, doing something of this type. I’d love to see a network of contacts established within our club! Well, the esteemed editor has chal- lenged me to provide occasional progress updates to Iniezione. I’ll do my best! Gene Davis (In the spirit of NWARC, you can contact Gene with suggestions, tips, and ideas… call him at 253 833 9564)

The Art of Meeting At Lombardis Words by Fred Russell

We are a lucky club in many ways, from the outstanding club history to the wonderful members we have. The February club meeting served to remind us of these details. We gathered at Lombardi’s Cucina in Issaquah. The turn out was very nice with people like Wes & Rita coming all the way from Burlington while Joe Faherty came up from Fox Island. There were new people like Jeffery Mirsepasy and John & James Farver. Even a few friends from the Fiat club joined us for the eve- ning. The meeting portion was definitely not the crowd draw. It was, without a doubt, our guest speaker Garth Stein; the New York Times best selling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain, (ARR). Garth lives in this area with his family and his dog, Comet. One of his other novels is Raven Stole the Moon is the story of a women named Jenna who returns to Alaska to try to solve the mystery of what became of her young son who disappeared a couple years earlier. She learns of the kushtaka and many other Native legends of the Tlingit during her search. It’s a wonderful read and Garth has inherited or learned his grand abilities to tell a story from his mother, who’s part Tlingit herself. The Tlingit people have a rich history of both art and story telling. Garth is also an Alfa Romeo owner and has gotten a taste of speed by racing Miatas. After getting talked into taking race driving lessons with Don Kitch Jr. out at Proformance Driving School he wrote his Best Seller, The Art of Racing in the Rain. In the book Denny wants to be a professional race car driver but has to figure out how to balance life around him including loss, love, and people that disagree with his dreams. Luckily he has a dog, Enzo, that often tries to bring clarity to this path. The book brings a wonderful, and often simplified perspective to the world, as much of the story is told through the eyes of Enzo who watches and analyzes the racing videos right next to Denny. In the end, the book includes fun, sadness, love, a great dog, an Alfa GTV, and some seat time in . The books popularity has brought wonderful opportuni- ties for Garth and as our speaker he shared some of them with us. He told us how Ferrari Magazine wanted to do a story about him driving a Ferrari. Since he doesn’t own one, they flew him to LA, provided him a car for the day, and a photographer. Garth told how they simply had him sign a couple release forms, the car was his for the day and off they went with the photographer only getting nervous a few times. Another story was that when he was on a vacation with his two sons in , he opted for a tour of the Ferrari factory. Unfortunately, his sons were too young to be allowed in but while they were happy with other distractions he enjoyed a tour of both the old and new factory areas with the open air feel, natural light, and historic Ferraris in the middle of the space. The tour guide, dressed in her red Ferrari racing outfit, took a cell phone call at one point saying that her boss wanted to join them. As they went through another doorway into a long hall, Luca di Montezemolo, the Chairman at Ferrari comes from the other end of the hall with his arms raised, saying how happy he is to me Garth. Obviously a big fan who has read ARR, he takes over the tour and walks Garth into places the tour guide couldn’t even follow. They entered the design area, and concept space where clay cars are being modeled. Luca took him to the lunchroom and bought lunches and they commandeered the vacant office of the head of design so they could sit, eat, and talk about writing books. Luca invited Garth to contact him in the future… if only he’d shared his contact info that might have been possible. Garth also brought Show & Tell items from his tour of the clothing factory where the racing suits are made for Ferrari, and many other teams. As he toured the shop, the location or facility wasn’t quite as stunning as the Ferrari Factory but the people were very pleased to provide the tour. At one point, his tour stopped and they handed Garth a set of racing gloves and shoes from Kimi Raikkonen, who’s approximately Garth’s size. Then, the guide quickly handed a larger size set of gloves saying, “...sorry, Kimi has such small hands. Try these. They’re Rubens’.” Garth shared these with us… way cool. We also learned some of the behind the scenes of book publishing including the story of how Garth’s agent called him af- ter reviewing ARR to say, “It’s narrated by a dog. I can’t sell a book narrated by a dog.” Garth made the scary choice to fire the agent rather than change the book. Garth’s confidence in himself and the book was right as he found another agent, sold over 6 million copies of the book, in 34 countries, and is awaiting the options for a movie version. We heard about time spent in New York where Garth produced a number of award-winning documentaries, and how he has co- founded Seattle7Writers organization, a non-profit aimed at promoting writers and reading in the community. I did ask him why his Alfa Romeo GTV is named Fredo, assuming it was named after me. Apparently, it was actually named after the character in the Godfather movies. I’m assured that we’ll see both Garth and his car at future club events. Garth is currently working on finishing his latest novel, also based in the northwest, awaiting the deadline on the movie option and anticipating his future book tours to promote the next book. I huge thanks to Garth for the entertaining words, outstanding books, and to the members who came to the meeting.
