Walk the wood decks of a battleship and see areas such as the 16” guns, 5” guns, missile decks, bridge, mess areas, and the world famous Captain’s Cabin - with the only bathtub installed on a battleship for a President. IOWA has hosted three Presidents - Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush - and numerous dignitaries during almost 70 years of service. Battleship IOWA is located at the L.A. Water- front, former home to the US Navy Battleship fleet prior to World War II and an area rich in maritime history. After the Iowa, we will have lunch at a nearby restaurant, then continue on to the SS Lane Victory, a World War II merchant marine ship. We will meet at the gate of the USS IOWA at 9:45am. This is at Berth 87 at the Port of Los Angeles. If you have any questions, contact Marty Goldsmith Please RSVP so we can plan for lunch: [email protected] or (562) 494.6350 5 The Circuit Write of Way, by Suesan Way We are exposed to it each year at the California Festival of Speed in April, Canadian Geese and Grand Prix Region partnered with Los Vegas Region in May and did a driving event at Spring Mountain Track that We just returned from the Parade in Michigan and a very included a Club Race. • Adaptation at Full Speed - Regulatory Changes in Fast Moving Industries Karin Hoisl University of Munich Management [email protected]
Paper to be presented at the DRUID 2011 on INNOVATION, STRATEGY, and STRUCTURE - Organizations, Institutions, Systems and Regions at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, June 15-17, 2011 Adaptation at Full Speed - Regulatory Changes in Fast Moving Industries Karin Hoisl University of Munich Management [email protected] Abstract Prior research provides rich insights into the mechanisms to enhance an organization?s ability to adapt. Even though human resources have been found to play a key role to enable organizations to reply to environmental opportunities and threats, evidence at the individual level is scarce. A comprehensive understanding of the determinants of adaptation is particularly important in fast moving industries, where organizations typically do not get a second chance to make up for a failure to adapt. This paper aims at filling this research gap. It uses a unique data set on Formula One motorsport constructors. A pre-post experimental design with exogenous regulatory change allows for the operationalization of adaptation as well as a causal interpretation of the results. The findings indicate that whereas domain-specific experience at the level of the individual decreases the adaptive ability of an organization, experience from moderately distant technological fields increases it. To exploit experience from more distant fields, absorptive capacity is needed. Additionally, results provide first evidence that learning matters with respect to the determinants of adaptation. Jelcodes:O32,- Adaptation at Full Speed – Regulatory Changes in Fast Moving Industries 1 INTRODUCTION Although understanding the determinants of adaptation looks back on a long tradition, it is still in the focus of research (Lawrence and Lorsch, 1967; Chakravarthy, 1982; Meyer, 1982; Ginsberg and Buchholtz, 1990; Ganesh et al., 2004).

Debuted in the autumn of 1979, Gordon Murray’s Brabham BT49 design is regarded by the South African’s peers as the ultimate Cosworth DFV-powered chassis in an extraordinarily competitive era which saw the Ford-badged three-litre V8 engine win 155 Formula 1 World Championship races over an incredible 17 years. Evolved over four seasons by F1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team, in three distinct specications, Murray’s family of BT49s were very special in almost every respect. Freed at last from the compromises previously imposed by cumbersome and thirsty 12-cylinder Alfa Romeo engines, in both at and vee formats, Murray delighted in shrink-wrapping the compact DFV in the neatest, sleekest package. Supremely elegant and stunningly detailed the BT49’s monocoque was beautifully crafted in aluminium with carbonbre stiening panels. Setting new standards aerodynamically his masterpieces were quick out of the box and netted six pole positions. With promising tools at their disposal at last, although the mercurial turbocars won the arms race in terms of power, Murray and his lieutenants worked tirelessly to maximise the inherent advantages they had. The team proved most adept at mastering the complex sliding skirt ‘wing car’ concept which unlocked extraordinary new parameters of cornering speed without, on the Brabham at least, sacricing basic straight line speed.
