4 Grand Prix RegionTour — USS Iowa August 2013 September 14, Saturday

Battleship IOWA Educational Museum & Attraction

Celebrate the American Spirit at the Battleship IOWA the West Coast’s only Battleship open to the public

Your tour takes you on a journey through World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War to experience the life of a sailor on the lead ship of the last class of gunships. Walk the wood decks of a battleship and see areas such as the 16” guns, 5” guns, missile decks, bridge, mess areas, and the world famous Captain’s Cabin - with the only bathtub installed on a battleship for a President.

IOWA has hosted three Presidents - Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush - and numerous dignitaries during almost 70 years of service. Battleship IOWA is located at the L.A. Water- front, former home to the US Navy Battleship fleet prior to World War II and an area rich in maritime history.

After the Iowa, we will have lunch at a nearby restaurant, then continue on to the SS Lane Victory, a World War II merchant marine ship.

We will meet at the gate of the USS IOWA at 9:45am. This is at Berth 87 at the Port of Los Angeles.

If you have any questions, contact Marty Goldsmith Please RSVP so we can plan for lunch: [email protected] or (562) 494.6350 5 The Circuit

7 Story by Skip Carter Photos by Stephen Krupnick In case you ever wondered where the name Grand Prix Region came from, I want to make sure there is no misunderstanding. Back in 1980, a group of Porsche Club members decided to form a PCA region centered around Long Beach and the Long Beach Grand Prix.

In 1980 the US Grand Prix West was a race held in Long Beach. It was the fourth round of the 1980 F1 season, the 5th USGP West and the 6th street race held in Long Beach. The 1980 event was dominated by driving a BT49.

The Brazilian Piquet took pole, fastest lap, led the race all 80 laps and recorded his first career race win.

(continued on next page) The Circuit

Indycar winners takuma Sato, Graham Rahal and Justin Wilson

The Long Beach Grand Prix has changed a lot over the years. It is the single largest event in the City of Long Beach, with 200,000 people attending. It is the longest running major street race in North America, starting in 1975. The last Formula 1 race here was 1983. From 1984 to 2008 it was a CART Indycar/Champ Car event with other popular events like the American Le Mans Series, Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race and others (like drifting and truck jumping).

Much of the 1.968 mile course goes over the former location of The Pike historic amusement zone. The course is especially known for the hairpin turn that leads to the curved front straight running the length of Shoreline Drive. The water, palm trees, aquarium and other structures make the LBGP a very scenic track.

The event is more than a race. It's a festival of things to do and see. It has the feel of being at a large county fair with a convention center full of sponsor and demonstra- tion booths, what seems like hundreds of food choices and, without a map and good sense of direction, you can easily feel lost (ask me how I know).

All in all, if you like being around race cars, fairs, festivals and crowds, you couldn't pick a better place west of the Rockies. Of course, for us Porsche fans, we don't get to see our cars running for the BIG win, which we hope may change with the promise of a Porsche entry in the Le Mans Prototype 1 class next year. That's pretty exciting. We've been waiting quite a few years to see Porsche back in the hunt for an overall 24 Hours du Mons win.

19 Back in the Saddle at the Fairplex Story by Skip Carter Photos by Stephen Krupnick

Our June 9 DE and Zone 8 Time Trial was a great success. Not only did we exceed 80 drivers, but we had 32 instructor assignments (several were just check rides, but still...), And 20 time trialers. And, another incident free event (knock on wood). And, I didn't hear anyone complain about "not enough track time."

For me, this was a special, special event. I had recently purchase Pete Smith's 944 Spec racer with Patrick Sloan. Unfortunately, Patrick was not able to make this event, the first available to us after purchasing the car. My only seat time in the car was a few minutes in the parking lot at Mulligan Racing Development, Other than instructing here and there, it had been over 10 years since I'd had a track car. I wondered how long it would take to shake out some of the cobwebs. Mike Mulligan (Mugs) rode with me the first session. I was all over the track, but it sure felt good. Connie Somers Escape Volunteer Chair Late morning I jumped into Christine Schreiber's new Boxster. She and her son were at- tending their first High Performance Driving Event. She was having a ball, but I needed to relieve her instructor. We spent a few minutes talking before getting in the Boxster. As an instructor you try to get a feel for the student before getting into the car. Chris obviously gleaned a lot of information from the Ground School the night before, but waiting for Alfred Abken (Grid Manager) to release us onto the track, I wondered how aggressive or timid Chris would be. Well, she had Noooooo problem putting her foot in it. You could feel that new Boxster acting like someone had just taken its leash off. Most new drivers are not used to looking for brake points, hard smooth braking while downshifting and double clutching at the same time, and setting up to accelerate through the apex, etc. Chris did great out of the shoot, then slowed down and tip toed around the corners until we got back to a straight line, then foot to the floor. Arturo Chaparro She was having such a good time, which is music to an instructor's hear. After a couple of laps I asked if she'd like to swap seats so I could show her the line and how to better Escape Nethercutt Tour Chair implement braking, shifting and all the rest. I had not driven a new Boxster, so this was a treat. Now, as an instructor , you never drive a students car more than 60 or 70%, which is what I did. I ALWAYS am amazed at how Porsche keeps making cars better, and this Boxster was no exception. We danced around that track for 3 or 4 laps. I don't know who was giggling the most, Chris, me, or the Boxster.

Anyway, Chris just needed someone to show her how to do it. I heard later that day from her other instructor that she was an exception learner, which was pretty obvious to me.

So, back in the 944 after lunch, I was starting to get comfortable, and started pushing brake points, testing the limits of our very old tires, and was pleasantly surprised at how well this car stuck. My last session of the day was the icing on the cake. My son-in-law, David Hutchins, who co-drove the 944 that day, was riding shotgun. This was his first HPDE, and he was having a ball. That last session I was really able to dial it up a notch or two. It felt great pushing deep into the brake zones, feeling the car at the limit of braking, ease into the throttle, pin the apex and feel the acceleration carry the car to the edge of the track. WHAT FUN!!!

We've sure got a great group of people coming to these events.. When you see how many instructors (over 30) jump in, how many volunteers who do everything from getting waivers signed to tech'ing the cars to running grid to running drivers meetings, managing Alfred Abken Kyla Lee Back in the Saddle at the Fairplex Grid Marshall
