The hotel has 21 suites ranging from 40 square metres to an impressive 130 square metres. THE HOTEL The unobstructed views of the Grand Harbour and the surrounding marina, large communal spaces, high vaulted ceilings, and ample amounts of natural light, are only a few of the many impressive characteristics that the Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour has to offer. The suites have been designed with the discerning traveller in mind, having all amenities available in-room THE HOTEL Walk-in showers, and an extravagant free standing bath, make the stay all the more comfortable in a historic yet luxurious setting. All our 21 suites are equipped with and iron and iron board, air conditioning and heating, complementary WiFi, safe, minibar, telephone, hairdryer, bath amenities, bathrobe, slippers, and a modern multimedia system with a flat screen TV provided with national and international TV channels. GRAND HARBOUR LOFT The Grand Harbour Loft Suite located on the first level, is known for its spaciousness. This suite offers the largest Living Room which is combined with an integrated multi- functional kitchenette. One also finds a simplistic and modernised large bathroom with an accompanying guest toilet on the side. There are two bedrooms with one King sized and one Queen sized bed. Both bedrooms have access to the same terrace which enjoys outstanding views of both the Senglea andValletta Harbours. MACINA GRAND HARBOUR SUITE The Macina Grand Harbour Suite is unique mainly due to its specialised walls which make it bulletproof. The spacious living and dining area along with an integrated kitchenette offers a welcoming, purposeful, and positive ambience. The bedroom on the upper floor gives off an exclusive feel from its illuminated skylight and is also equipped with a personal bathroom and king-sized bed. MACINA GRAND HARBOUR SUITE The second bedroom on the suite’s ground floor also offers a king-sized bed and contains the only free-standing bathtub available in the hotel. The suite can also be connected to an adjoining Fortress Suite, which further adds to the innovative, flexible, and spacious feel of the Macina Grand Harbour Suite. SENGLEA SUITES Our Senglea Suites offer a duplex living accommodation. The spacious living rooms in both suites enjoy access to a wide terrace with a gorgeous view of the Senglea Harbour. The bathrooms are large, minimalistic, and modern. One suite also has an accompanying guest toilet on the side. SENGLEA SUITES The bedrooms are each located on the upper floor. In Suite 211, one can sit back and relax on the king-sized bed, or step outside on the balcony. To get to the bedroom in Suite 212, one must cross an architectural bridge offering a unique experience. GRAND HARBOUR SUITES With 10 in total, these Suites offer breath-taking sea-side views of the Valletta Harbour, the Senglea Harbour, and the Vittoriosa Marina. Some Grand Harbour Suites are designed as a duplex suite whilst the remaining suites follow the same suite principles with the exception of being on a single level. The suites all have perpetual but modernised large bathrooms. Suite 204 contains the only integrated kitchenette found in the Grand Harbour Suites. Suite 205 is the only Grand Harbour Suite which has a French balcony. CORNER SUITES There is a total of 4 Corner Suites, all of which offer multiple views of the surrounding areas. There are 3 Corner Suites all containing a French balcony whilst the final Corner Suite provides a spacious terrace with a beautiful panoramic view of the Senglea Harbour. All of our Corner Suites can accommodate up to 4 persons. The Corner Suites also enjoy large modernised bathrooms and comfortable king-sized fitted bedrooms. FORTRESS SUITES With 3 Fortress Suites in total, all of these suites provide a comfortable and cosy, royal-feel ambience. The delicately carved limestone walls combined with multifunctional lighting creates a Fortress feel. One can take a sneak peak of the Marina from Suite 103, the only suite that provides a limited outdoor view. FORTRESS SUITES The comfortable bedrooms are fitted with king-sized beds and alongside there are the large modernised bathrooms. Suite 105 has been specifically designed to be fully accessible. Suite 213 is very unique due to its illuminating skylight and connecting door that leads to the Macina Grand Harbour Suite. HISTORY The Sheer Bastion, built in 1554 during the reign of Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, has been one of the Grand Harbour’s iconic landmarks, deriving its name ‘Macina’ from the large sheer crane structure (‘macchina’), used to hoist heavy masts and other cargo, which was eventually dismantled in 1864. The Malta Labour Party moved into the building in the 1970’s, using it as a headquarters until the 1990s, when it moved to Hamrun.     18 – The Three Cities The Three Cities are Vittoriosa/Birgu, Cospicua/Bormla and Senglea/L’Isla. Most of the Three Cities was badly bombed, much of its three parts destroyed, during the Second World War. Some inkling of what the area went through is contained in Chapter 15. Much earlier, it had been bombarded during the Great Siege of 1565, as described in Chapter 5, which also tells how Birgu grew from a village to the vibrant city of the Order of the Knights of St John following their arrival in 1530. You cannot travel to the other side of the Grand Harbour without bearing those events in mind. And yet, almost miraculously, the Three Cities have been given a new lease of life, partly due to European Union funding. You would really be missing out not to go. Most of the sites concerning women are in Vittoriosa/Birgu. From the Upper Barracca Gardens of Valletta you get a marvellous view of the Three Cities, and I think the nicest way to get there is to take the lift down from the corner of the gardens to the waterfront and cross the road to the old Customs House behind which is the landing place for the regular passenger ferry which carries you across the Grand Harbour. Ferries go at a quarter to and a quarter past the hour, and return on the hour and the half hour. That is the way we went. Guide books suggest how you make the journey by car or bus. If you are taking the south tour on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus, you could hop off at the Vittoriosa waterfront (and then hop on a later one).

Demographic growth The population was about 100,000 in 1800, it surpassed the 250,000 mark after World War II and rose to over 300,000 by 1960. A quarter of the population lived in the harbour towns by 1921. This increase in the population caused the fast growth of harbour suburbs and the rural villages. The British were in constant need of skilled labourers for the Dockyard. From 1871 onwards, the younger generation migrated from the villages in search of employment with the Colonial Government. Employment with the British Services reached a peak in the inter-war period (1919-39) and started to decline after World War II. In the 1950s and 1960s the British started a gradual rundown of military personnel in their overseas colonies, including Malta. Before the beginning of the first rundown in 1957, the British Government still employed 27% of the Maltese work force. 2. Maltese emigration The Maltese first became attracted to emigration in the early 19th century. The first organised attempt to establish a Maltese colony of migrants in Corfu took place in 1826. Other successful colonies of Maltese migrants were established in North African and Mediterranean ports in Algiers, Tunis, Bona, Tripoli, Alexandria, Port Said, Cairo, Smyrna, Constantinople, Marseilles and Gibraltar. By 1842 there were 20,000 Maltese emigrants in Mediterranean countries (15% of the population). But most of these returned to Malta sometime or another. Emigration to Mediterranean areas declined rapidly after World War II.

JOHN OF JERUSALEM OF RHODES AND OF MALTA – A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE ORDER OF MALTA INTRODUCTION: HOSPITALLERS Following thirteen years of excavation by the Israel Antiquities Authority, a thousand-year-old structure – once a hospital in Jerusalem – will be open to the public; part of it seems earmarked to serve as a restaurant. 1 In Syria, as the civil war rages on, reports and footage have been emerging of explosions in and around Crac des Chevaliers castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 2 During the interwar period (1923–1943), the Italian colonial authorities in the Dodecanese engaged in a wide-ranging series of projects to restore – and in some instances redesign – several buildings on Rhodes, in an attempt to recreate the late medieval/Renaissance lore of the island. 3 Between 2008 and 2013, the European Regional Development Fund provided the financial support necessary for Malta to undertake a large-scale restoration of several kilometres of fortifications, with the aim of not only preserving these structures but also enhancing Malta’s economic and social well- -being.4 Since 1999, the Sainte Fleur Pavilion in the Antananarivo University Hospital Centre in Madagascar has been helping mothers to give birth safely and assisting infants through care and research. 5 What binds together these seemingly disparate, geographically-scattered buildings, all with their stories of hope and despair? Giannantonio Scaglione Facolta' di lettere e filosofia, Universita' di Catania In this paper a virtually unknown cartographic representation will be analyzed: the planimetry of Valletta, which was realized in the late eighteenth century by the architect Sebastiano Ittar. Through the analysis of this map, the paper aims at reconstructing not only the cartographic techniques but also the representation and interpretation of the urban area: the map may serve to reconstruct the knowhow of a late eighteenth - early nineteenth century professional cartographer and the complex relationships between space and urban society. To date very little research activity about the architect and his works has been conducted1; the planimetry of Valletta, however, has been the subject of short essays by Albert Ganado2 and Giuseppe Dato3. Sebastiano Ittar was born in Catania in 1768. He was the son of Stefano Ittar4, an architect operating in Sicily and, since the second half of the 1700’s, in Malta where in 1783 the Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem commissioned him to construct the new Library of Valletta5. After his father’s death (Jan 8th 1790), Sebastiano continued to attend to the construction of the new Library6 up to its conclusion, as it emerges from payment notes from April of the same year up to 1795. After June 1798, when Malta was invaded by Napoleonic troops heading to Egypt, Sebastiano and his father’s family were still on the island, but he soon fled to escape from the unrest and went to Rome where he studied architecture.

In recent years a number harbour cities worldwide have been at the forefront of regeneration – and re-building their reality based on revived cultural centres, new commercial activity and international links rather than basing their success on the industrial activity synonymous with their past lives. Valletta, Malta’s harbour – city region is one such city. This paper traces the fate of the Grand Harbour and its neighbouring cities in the island of Malta through the events of past centuries and the most recent regeneration projects. This paper will highlight the importance that harbours have for the prosperity of the urban areas. By analysing the rise and fall of the city regions, this paper will also demonstrate that regeneration of harbour areas has to be in line with the regeneration of the surrounding cities – one does not occur without another.
