PhytoKeys 65: 1–14. doi: 10.3897/phytokeys.65.8679 Abstract Kumbira forest is a discrete patch of moist forest of Guineo-Congolian biome in Western Angola central scarp and runs through Cuanza Norte and Cuanza Sul province. The project aimed to document the floristic diversity of the Angolan escarpment, a combination of general walk-over survey, plant specimen collection and sight observation was used to aid the characterization of the vegetation. Over 100 plant specimens in flower or fruit were collected within four identified vegetation types. The list of species in- cludes two new records of Guineo-Congolian species in Angola, one new record for the country and one potential new species. Keywords Kumbira forest, Guineo-Congolian, floristic diversity Introduction Angola lies almost wholly within the southern zone of tropical grassland, bounded by tropical rain forest of the Congo in the north and by the Kalahari Desert in the south (Shaw 1947). -

Conde da Ribeira 9, P-1300 Lisbon, Portugal Received 26 JUlie 1995; revised 6 October 1995 Oxyanthu5 gossweileri from Angola has been described from a single specimen collected in 1906. A search in herbaria holding Angolan collections has revealed an additional flowering specimen, allowing a sound morphological and pollen morphological investigation. It is concluded that 0. g055weileri must be kept in the Gardenieae - Gardeniinae but deserves generic segregation. A new genus Ganguelia is described and the necessary new combin~ alion made. G. g055weileri is a pyrrhophytic geofrutex with densely hairy, suborbicular leaf blades with subpalmale venation. ChoroJogically, Ganguelia is endemic in the western part of the Zambezian Region; in the Rubiaceae, the mono specific Calanda (Knoxieae) has a very similar narrow distribution. Ganguelia seems to exhibit two poJlen morphological features which are not yet observed among the Gardenieae genera with tetrad poilen, namely, the ± acalymmate condition of the tetrads and the colpoidorate grains. However, these latter occur together with the pororate ones characteristic for Gardenieae tetrads. A part of the tetrads are decussate; this arrangment, not yet reported from the Rubiaceae, was previously overlooked in several genera and is hence not a peculiarity of the new genus. Belinga Mountains
Missouri Botanical Garden The biodiversity of the Belinga Mountains Prepared by Dr M.E. Leal Field team: D. Nguema, E. Mounoumoulossi, P. Bissiemou Missouri Botanical Garden Gabon 2008 Prologue Missouri Botanical Garden was awarded a National Geographic Society grant to carry out botanical expeditions “in search for rare and endemic plants on isolated mountain tops in Gabon”. This particular topic was chosen since the rain forest on these mountain tops is threatened by global warming and in danger in disappearing over the next 30 years. Among these endangered mountain tops are also the Belinga Mountains, exposed not only to global warming, but also to mining. This range is a geological formation which is exceptionally very rich in iron. Therefore, the Belinga Mountains were prioritized to record as much as possible before this unique forest disappears for the ever demanding need of raw material for the Chinese booming economy. Access roads were in the process of getting shut off and therefore this is probably the last biodiversity assessment done in the Belinga Mountains. This report not only accounts about the outstanding botany, but also mentions the discovery of two caves with archeological artifacts. The regional archeologist R. Oslisly was much enchanted by their discovery, because these caves by geological standards are already unique but the vast abundance of flints and on the cave floors and pottery indicates to their importance to Stone Age cultures and later Iron Age cultures. In terms of geology, botany and archeology the Belinga Mountains have all the star qualities to become a world heritage site, alas. -

Where the distribution is unknown, we have inserted Distr.? after the taxon name. • All species known or suspected to be fully naturalised in Zimbabwe are included in the list.
