9 THE VICAR’S LETTER

Dear Friends,

We’ve had an awful week in the news. The mass shooting in Plymouth, the Taliban havoc in Afghanistan as US troops withdrew, the ‘code red for humanity’ report and loss of life caused by extreme weather across the planet, and then, there is the ongoing Covid crisis. What can we do?

The first thing to do is to trust that God is with us, and hope and pray. So, we hold before God all of those at the front-line of these problems.

• We pray for those all who have lost loved ones and those whose lives are changed forever by the impact of that violence on the community and by the impact of the Climate crisis. We give thanks to God for all the emergency services – the police, paramedics and fire fighters who respond swiftly and effectively.

• We pray to God for the children, women and men suffering under the violence and conflict in Afghanistan that they may find your presence, courage, safety, freedom and peace. We hold before God the world leaders and ask for liberation of the people from all who oppress them. We pray that oppressors may have a change of heart.

• We pray to God to enable world leaders to act swiftly and implement the climate commitments. We ask God to help us to rescue the displaced, abandoned and forgotten of this earth, and to bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. • We turn to God in prayer with hope and confidence that God is with us caring and protecting us. We pray that God’s love supports and soothes the anxiety of our hearts.

The second thing to do amid these crises is whatever you can. Our seemingly small offerings are made perfect in the presence of God. And remember, with God, all things are possible. In our magazine this month, I hope you will find some practical ideas as to what we can do individually and as a church community to respond to the climate crisis.

10

Know that I give thanks to God for you, your many and varied ministries, and all that you offer in the name of Christ,

All blessings, Veronica

13 SHOEBOXES FOR EASTERN EUROPE AND THE BALKANS

Each year Rotary International in Greta Britain and Ireland organises a project to enable children in the poorest countries of Europe to receive parcel at Christmas time. The responses we receive from the recipients show how valued these gifts are and encourage Rotary Clubs in those areas themselves to buy in to the project and provide additional boxes, in addition to acting as delivery agents.

At the time of writing I am expecting the leaflets setting out the full details of the scheme to be delivered to me and as soon as they are I shall place a supply in church.

The date for return of the boxes will be at the end of October. The only change in the scheme this year is that after 25 years of asking for £1 to cover all costs including transport, this will increase to £1.50 as transport costs were taking all of the £1 last year.

Once again I am expecting an enthusiastic responses from our two schools. I hope that members of our church family will be willing to support this scheme this year, which is very good value for the cost involved.

Any queries can be addressed to me at [email protected] or on 01425 276433

FOOD BANK ACTIVITY BAGS

In late June Tracy from the Food Bank contacted the Sewing Ladies of St Marks, asking if we would be interested in making fabric bags to support two students who were organising Family Activities for the school summer holiday period. ' Yes', came almost immediate replies from the Sewing Ladies.

We were asked to provide 200 bags size 20 x 18" which meant a large amount of material would be needed. Cupboards and drawers were searched for fabric such as pre-loved curtains and bedding for recycling. Sewing machines were once again whirring away in sewing rooms and on dining room tables. Amazingly by early July we were able to pass on 100 bags to the Food Bank for filling in advance of the school holiday period.

On July 22nd in the Church Library, we handed over the remaining 100 bags to Sarah - Food Bank Deputy Manager and the two students - Esther and Molly - who had worked extremely hard organising family trails and sourcing items for family play in and around the local area. It was a huge undertaking to find suitable items for 200 bags. The girls' families also helped.

For the first time the Sewing Ladies were able to see the collective fruits of their labour and were very interested in hearing from Molly and Esther on how hard they had worked to get this idea up and running. Sarah gave a very interesting short talk on how the Food Bank is actively working in the BH23 area.

If you would like to know more about the work of the Food Bank there are a few leaflets in the foyer of the Church. It is a wonderful, sadly necessary, local organisation which constantly needs our support so please keep adding items to the box in the Church.

Thank you to everyone involved for your enthusiasm and help.

15 Bereavement Support

Each of us react to loss in ways that are uniquely personal. The Bible tells us that God is with us in the middle of our suffering and that He understands what we go through. Everyone experiences death and loss at some point in their lives.

‘The Lord is close to the broken hearted,’ Psalm 34 verse 18

If you need support during this difficult time, a good place to start is by visiting one or all of these helpful websites. www.careforthefamily.org.uk/bereavement

You will find information, resources and articles available. www.ataloss.org

Help in finding local and specific support. www.cruse.org.uk Cruse have a national helpline… 0808 808 1677

The Bible can comfort us during this time of bereavement. A very well known psalm is the following….

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Singing from the Heart

One of the many frustrations of recent times has been that, even after the post-Easter relaxations of the covid regulations, our village Choir has been able to sing only at half-strength (in numbers – not, we hope, in quality) for Sunday services, so that the divided choir sings alternate hymns.

We are, however, much better off than the rest of the congregation, who haven’t been allowed to sing at all, and we know how much many people have missed the opportunity to sing. In confidence that better times will come, we would like to invite anyone who might be interested in joining us to come along to one of our practices, which are on Thursday evenings and last for 1½ hours (7.00 to 8.30).

The Choir sings for the 10 o’clock service on Sunday mornings. Might you, or someone whom you know, be interested? The Choir’s motto is:

“Singing is one of the essential ministries of the Church. It doesn’t have to be complicated – but it does need to be from the heart!”

We therefore do our best, without taking anything too seriously, and having a lot of fun along the way. We are not all musicians or experienced singers, and we can’t all read complicated music; but we have enough who are, and they nurture and lead the rest of us in the right direction. If it all gets too complicated for you to sing your part, sing the tune (which is what I do). All that is needed is a willingness to contribute to the services and a pleasure in making music with others. The repertoire is varied, singable, and never dull or dry, and some of it is specially composed for us.

If you think that you might be interested in this, please contact our director, Alison Hedger, on 0774 040 4764 or at [email protected].

Samaritan’s Purse UK

Previously known as Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse UK is a full time disaster relief agency directing medical help and aid, digging wells, offering apprenticeships/education as well as giving shoeboxes to excited but needy children throughout Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Known for Christmas shoeboxes, Samaritan’s Purse UK also provides schools with “education” shoeboxes, equipping classrooms, etc at different times throughout the year. Shoeboxes are distributed by local churches who know where the need is greatest.

For some years St Mark’s people have been able to pack shoeboxes in the traditional way. When the pandemic hit Samaritans Purse UK offered an alternative – packing the boxes on-line. Even the least technologically minded found it easy, just following the links from this website Shoebox Online (samaritans-purse.org.uk) and many plan to pack on-line again. Tracking also made it possible to know the country where the gifts were received.

If you prefer the traditional boxes, leaflets are available in the Church foyer giving helpful information as well as labels. I will collect these boxes at the end of October and ensure they reach the collection point in time for children to know God’s love in action.

19 TO AUTUMN

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round that thatch-eve run; To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core; To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will never cease, For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store? Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind; Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep, Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers: And sometimes like a gleaner thou does keep Steady thy laden head across a brook; Or by a cyder-press, with patient look, Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, - While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river sallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies; And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn; Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

John Keats (1795-1821) 20 HIGHCLIFFE FRIENDS IN NEED

It is now 49 years since Rev. Hancock, the then Assistant Curate at St. Mark’s, arranged two public meetings to implement our Group, then known as “Highcliffe Good Neighbours”. The initiative for this had arisen from clergy meetings of the three Highcliffe Churches, who identified community needs for several activities not covered either by what was then known as “Welfare Services” or other local voluntary groups.

Work started in 1973, aiming to cover home visits, transport, odd jobs and even babysitting. The Boys Brigade helped with gardening and house redecoration, also a more unusual task, to help a local “character” move from his rotting caravan to a newer one provided by a well wisher.

And we still exist today, our help having evolved to providing transport to villagers to their medical and dental appointments and waiting to return them home. This has become a much valued service amongst those who can no longer drive themselves but needs new drivers now to come forward to replace those who have retired from helping.

There is no regular commitment, drivers are offered individual journeys which they can accept, or decline if they are not available; they are reimbursed for their help by a mileage payment for each journey undertaken. You will also meet some most interesting people too!!

If you can help in any way, or would just like more information, please contact the secretary, Cressida Belbin on 01425 279328 who would be pleased to hear from you.

21 ST MARK’S CHARITABLE SUPPORT GROUP

St Mark’s Church’s response to local, national and international need.

For many years members of St. Mark’s Church have been extremely generous to a number of different charities, and to the church itself. In the next few editions of this magazine there will be a series of articles by those volunteers who with other helpers give their time to organise raising funds for the following familiar projects. These articles will give the background and beneficial impact of your giving.

• The Children’s Society, Christian Aid, Mission to Seafarers, USPG, • Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox, and Rotary Shoebox, The Women’s Refuge • Kinkiisi, Uganda. Schools and hospitals, Christchurch Food Bank. • Workbox, Eve Project, Honeypot.

The Charitable Support Group is a small number of St Mark’s Church members set up to coordinate the charitable effort of St Mark’s and advise the PCC. The PCC has the final approval on all charitable activities done in the name of St Marks Church.

Although effort is made to spread requests throughout the year inevitably there may appear sometimes to be competition between different charities. This represents a conscious change by St Mark’s Church, providing a choice of supporting one or the other charity or even both. Church members already privately support a wide range of very needy causes. It is to be hoped that through the St Mark’s Church, publicity may be given and attention focussed to help you make your decisions.

The Charitable Support Group meets regularly a few days before each PCC meeting and would welcome and guide any church member wishing to lead a charitable project that has PCC approval. However, at present the group cannot take on or lead projects suggested to them without a volunteer willing to take the lead. But PCC approval of any St Mark’s Church charitable work is always necessary.

22 Look out for the charity articles and please continue to give as generously as you have always done. Thank you.

Look out for these articles and please continue to give as generously as you have always done. Thank you.

Christchurch Foodbank+ Faithworks Wessex

Since it first started, St Marks Church members have regularly supported the work of the Foodbank+ both through donations of food in the box at the back of the church and by gifts of money in the envelopes provided in the same place. From the weekly food requests and notes which the Foodbank+ coordinator, Tracy Blick, emails, it is clear what a vital and growing community lifeline the Foodbank+ fulfils for many families in Highcliffe and Christchurch. In addition to the food it now helps with furniture when the homeless are found homes as well as “cooking on a budget” and “free debt advice and budget coaching” courses. The Foodbank+ have been extending their premises in the old Roman Catholic church building in . Tracy writes, “ As restrictions are lifted, we are reminded, that our Faith is in God but we must be good stewards of his creation (Psalm 24:1) and that includes our fellow man, looking after yourselves and after others.” She notes that in the summer holidays they have provided for each of their School Holiday Hunger Families a “food parcel and with each food parcel a Healthy Outdoor Bag, the bags (made by St Mark’s Church) will have a scavenger hunt history map (designed by Esther and Molly, two GCSE students), “101 things to do book”, outdoor games equipment, activities and healthy snacks. The bags are to encourage outdoor, healthy, family time throughout the summer”.

At this time particularly, please continue generously to support this now essential local charity with your donations.

23 Dear Friends,

A new report from UN scientists warns that global temperatures have risen faster since 1970 than at any point in the past 2,000 years.

Leaders from 196 countries are meeting in Glasgow from the 31st October to the 12th November for COP26: the UN major climate conference. They are being asked to agree action to limit climate change and its effects such as rising sea levels and extreme weather, raging fires and flash flooding.

What would success at COP26 look like? (COP stands for Conference of the Parties).

There are huge expectations COP26 will deliver significant progress in the battle against rising temperatures. Richer countries will be asked to honour the $100bn financial pledge they have already made, if any progress is to be made.

An agreement committing the world's nations to phasing out coal-burning would be a major achievement, there will also be pressure on countries to keep raising their ambitions, not only regarding cutting emissions, but in helping those communities and countries already affected by climate change.

What has all this to do with you – and me – and St Mark’s ? The Church of and Winchester Diocese are encouraging parishes to ‘Care for God’s Creation’. As stewards of God’s gift of creation each of us has a responsibility to ensure that this remains a sustainable world and to respond to the social injustice visited on many of the world’s poorest people as a result of climate change.

Sunday 5th September is Creation Sunday, and you will begin to hear what we can do to safeguard God’s wonderful creation, how we can help to sustain and renew the life of earth. Our aim at St Mark’s is to try to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030 in line with the national church's target agreed at General Synod in 2020, and in the coming months we will be looking at how we as a church and as individuals can make a difference.

What difference can a few people in a small village church make ?

A country no-body from a small town in Galilee changed the world !!!

Wedding at St Mark’s

On the 2nd August I had the pleasure of singing at the wedding of Russ and Maria at St Mark’s. It was a beautiful ceremony led by Veronica and with two readings from children (one of which was their Son) and one from an adult female family friend. The couple handpicked three songs. I sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow as Maria entered the church, Songbird as Russ and Maria signed the register and Can’t Help Falling In Love as the newly married couple left the church.

It was such an honour and a joy to be asked to be a part of their very special day. See the weddings page on St Mark’s website for a photo.
