syncopations beloved by fans of this style. The pianist-leader has a great band, held together by the gifted Gress (whose work in Fred Hersch’s trio has conferred upon him just the right experience for this kind of gig). Smith is a very tasteful play- er, given to accents similar to those of Michael Sarin but in a more understated style. And of course Liebman lifts up every session he’s on, playing with both taste and fire (I’m particularly fond of the bouncing unison he shares with Kane on “Stealth Plan”). The tasteful lilt of “Moon and Shadows” again conjures up Hersch, and is really a model of how good a mainstream trio can be, not so much exploring linear extension as moving in tandem with a fascinating threeway conversation revealing new details on each listen. Though the group never cranks up the volume or lays it on tastelessly (though they get pretty raucous for the apart-at- the-seams swing of “Revenge of the Wally Dug”), they sound best to me on the more busy pieces. Instead of the impressionistic but unmemorable Brian Lynch by Mark Ladenson “Catching Threads,” I’ll take the hyper-tricky, almost George Russell-ish head on “Crypto- monic complexity. I certainly prefer the tunes when Zoology”—with a great duo section for Liebman’s the band plays flat out. But at the same time, it’s soprano and Smith—or Kane’s shifting rhythms and hard not to be won over by sultry numbers like R. quick-moving imagination on “Winter Rose” and Lopez’s “La Sitiera” (where Perdomo’s playing “Unified Fields.” Fine stuff overall.

  • Peter Bernstein
Peter Bernstein Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein (b. 1967, New York City) has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 80 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released nine albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke. He got his first break while attending the New School when he met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall. Hall asked Peter to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was release as Live at Town Hall Vol. 2. by Music Masters. Hall noted that Peter “…has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive guitarist I’ve heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.” Also in 1990, Peter Bernstein was discovered by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson and took part in the first of four recordings with him. He was a regular member of his group throughout the 1990s. “Some people just have it.” Donaldson said. “…most of the time you have to teach someone what to do, but Peter knows it all.” Peter has also enjoyed long musical associations with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Cobb’s Mob), as well as organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart as a member of their highly acclaimed trio. The New York Times called them “the best organ trio of the last decade”.

  • Trombonist STEVE DAVIS Pays Tribute to the Immortal JJ Johnson
! AVAILABLE NOW on Smoke Sessions Records: Trombonist STEVE DAVIS Pays Tribute to the Immortal J.J. Johnson on Say When ! "'Say When'...burnishes his hard-bop bona fides." - The New York Times One of the most meaningful moments in the remarkable trombonist Steve Davis' life occurred when he first met his idol, J.J. Johnson. It was the morning after the immortal trombonist heard Davis play for the first time. "I walked in the theater and I heard this tremendous, warm sound and clean, clear articulation and sophisticated harmonic ideas. Yeah, Stevie, you're right on track, baby. Keep it up. You sound beautiful, baby." In recalling it, Davis says, "It was like getting my passport stamped. It's just meant the world to me.” Davis, now beloved and highly influential in his own right, has always viewed J.J. not just as the inspiration for every modern jazz trombonist, but as the model upon which his personal artistic aspirations are built. "J.J. Johnson is the Charlie Parker of the trombone," says Davis. "He's our Bird. He changed the game for the instrument. He's been a colossal influence on my playing, on my writing, and on my overall approach to the music." Now, Davis is ready to offer a compelling tribute to the NEA Jazz Master with his new release on Smoke Sessions Records, Say When. To pay proper tribute to a legend, an artist - even one as extraordinary as Davis - must do more than pay homage, but must extend that storied legacy, demonstrating its timelessness by offering a musical vision that is immediate and of the present.
