    BECCA STEVENS SINGER / SONGWRITER / PERFORMER BIOGRAPHY North Carolina bred, Brooklyn based singer/multi- instrumentalist Becca Stevens is a composer, bandleader, and educator. In her playing, singing, and writing, Stevens has a voice that can only be accurately described as her own. Her original music is hailed worldwide for its its intricate harmonies and rhythms subtly rooted in jazz and Irish Folk and West African music. Boundless in the elements from which she draws her inspiration, Stevens is known for her unique ability to craft exquisite and authentic compositions both for her own band, and for GRAMMY award winning artists who run the gamut of genre from Jacob Collier, to Michael League (Snarky Puppy), and most notably with folk legend David Crosby. Stevens is a member of Crosby’s Lighthouse Band whose album ‘Here If You Listen’ (BMG ‘18), features the distinct songwriting of its four members— Stevens, Crosby, League, and Michelle Willis. Stevens has received copious praise from the likes of The New York Times, was Downbeat Magazine’s 2017 Rising Star Female Vocalist, and was featured on NPR Music’s “Songs We Love”. She has toured the world performing with her band, and collaborating with peers such as Brad Mehldau, Kneebody, Esperanza Spalding, Billy Childs, Ambrose Akinmusire, Vijay Iyer, Taylor Eigsti, José James, Eric Harland, Gerald Clayton, Travis Sullivan’s Björkestra and many others. In 2015, Perfect Animal, the highly anticipated follow up to Weightless (Sunnyside), produced by engineer Scott Solter, was released on Universal Music Classics. As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band.

Saturday, February 11 @ 7 PM and 9:30 PM Prince Theatre Part of the African Roots, American Voices series. 16/17 SEASON 5 PROGRAM NOTES Miguel Zenón’s new album, Típico, is above all a celebration of his longstanding quartet. His previous releases have augmented the core unit with additional instrumentalists as Zenón looked outward to explore various aspects of his Puerto Rican heritage. This new album feels more intimate. Its focus stays closer to home, with nods to Zenón’s own personal and professional life as it zeroes in on what makes his band unique. Zenón’s quartet has been developing a common language for more than a decade. Pianist Luis Perdomo and bassist Hans Glawischnig have been with Zenón since the turn of the millennium; drummer Henry Cole joined the band in 2005. Their language is thoroughly fluent in modern jazz, with instrumental prowess. The dialect of rhythmic and harmonic complexity they’ve created together through the years is distinctive.     October 8, 2015 Young Lords exhibit, Christian Scott at Harlem Stage By Ron Scott Christian Scott EMILIE PONS PHOTO The 1960s were heavily colored with shaded overtones of rebellious youth implementing revolutionary tactics against an indifferent government that always seemed to have a smirk of supremacy. In an effort to bring civil and human rights to the forefront of this revolution, the Young Lords, with founder Jose Cha Cha Jimenez, reorganized to become the Young Lords Party in the fall of 1960. Their sense of urgency at the time was Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s urban renewal plan, which was displacing Puerto Ricans from prime real estate areas such as Lakeview and Lincoln Park. The Young Lords became a militant social activist organization defining Puerto Rican self- determination in the community. Multiple chapters began forming nationwide in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. In July 1969, the national headquarters in Chicago sanctioned New York City, where nearly 80 percent of the U.S. Puerto Rican population lived, as the regional chapter. This chapter was formed by Mickey Melendez with Felipe Luciano, chairman; David Perez, minister of defense; Juan Gonzalez, minister of education; Pablo Guzman, minister of information; Juan Fi Ortiz, minister of finance; and Denise Oliver, minister of economic development. “¡Presente! The Young Lords in New York” is now on exhibit at Loisaida through Oct. 10 at 710 E. Ninth St. and Avenue C, the Bronx Museum of the Arts through Oct. 18 at 1040 Grand Concourse and El Museo del Barrio through Oct. 17 at 1230 Fifth Ave.
