It is generally accepted that what we now possess is the growth of family or tribal histories, which, from being transmitted down, from generation to generation, give us fair accounts of actual events. The Tales that are here given are only a few out of very many hundreds embedded in the vast quantity of Old Gaelic manuscripts hidden away in the libraries of nearly all the countries of Europe, as well as those that are treasured in the Royal Irish Academy and Trinity College, Dublin. An idea of the extent of these manuscripts may be gained by the statement of one, who perhaps had the fullest knowledge of them the late Professor O'Curry, in which he says that the portion of them (so far as they have been examined) relating to His- torical Tales would extend to upwards of 4000 pages of large size. This great mass is nearly all untrans- lated, but all the Tales that are given in this volume have already appeared in English, either in The Publications of the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language] the poetical versions of The IV A LAND OF HEROES. Celá studie vychází z teorie Georgese Dumézila, která p ředpokládá, že takzvaná trojfunk ční struktura je p řízna čná pouze pro mýty indoevropských národ ů. -

I dedicate all my triumphs to you 4 5 Introduction The topic of the thesis is the Irish myth Cath Maige Tuired - "The Second Battle of Mag Tuired", which is the story about the battle between the Túatha Dé Danann, the gods of pagan Ireland, and their enemies the Fomoire. What I wish to focus upon in the Cath Maige Tuired is not the battle in itself, which has been compared to the war between the Aesir and the Vanir in Scandinavian mythology1, but a passage at the end of this myth, where the goddess Mórrigan (here in the form of a mortal) comes with a prediction of the end of the world. -

THE WOOING OF CHOICE: Prosimetric Reconstruction of the Female Journey in Irish mythology by Roxanne Bodsworth 2020 This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Institute of Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities, Victoria University. i Abstract: In “The Wooing of Choice: prosimetric reconstruction of the female journey in Irish mythology”, I examine the representation of female characters in Irish mythological tales where the woman chooses her lover in contravention of social expectations. In the traditional versions, the woman recedes into the background as the narrative develops around the male hero. I ask what happens to the discourse of the narrative when it is subverted so that the focus is placed upon the female experience. This is explored through a creative component, called ‘Meet Me in My World’, a prosimetric reconstruction of three Irish tales in which the woman chooses her lover and compels him to follow her. The three tales are: Aislinge Óengusso (The Dream of Óengus); Tóruigheacht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne (The Pursuit of Diarmaid and Gráinne); and Longes mac nUislenn (The Exile of the Sons of Uisliu). The exegetical component, comprising 50% of the thesis, is composed of two sections. In the first, I examine theories of feminist writing and remythologizing, and develop a new model for feminist reconstruction, which I apply to the creative product. In the second section, I explore the relationship between narrative and poetry, from medieval prosimetric translations to contemporary hybrid texts, and consider which form provides the best framework for my female-centred narrative and the verse. -

MEMORABLE BARBARITIES AND NATIONAL MYTHS: ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY AND IRISH EPIC IN MODERN IRISH THEATRE A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Katherine Anne Hennessey, B.A., M.A. ____________________________ Dr. Susan Cannon Harris, Director Graduate Program in English Notre Dame, Indiana March 2008 MEMORABLE BARBARITIES AND NATIONAL MYTHS: ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY AND IRISH EPIC IN MODERN IRISH THEATRE Abstract by Katherine Anne Hennessey Over the course of the 20th century, Irish playwrights penned scores of adaptations of Greek tragedy and Irish epic, and this theatrical phenomenon continues to flourish in the 21st century. My dissertation examines the performance history of such adaptations at Dublin’s two flagship theatres: the Abbey, founded in 1904 by W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, and the Gate, established in 1928 by Micheál Mac Liammóir and Hilton Edwards. I argue that the potent rivalry between these two theatres is most acutely manifest in their production of these plays, and that in fact these adaptations of ancient literature constitute a “disputed territory” upon which each theatre stakes a claim of artistic and aesthetic preeminence. Partially because of its long-standing claim to the title of Ireland’s “National Theatre,” the Abbey has been the subject of the preponderance of scholarly criticism about the history of Irish theatre, while the Gate has received comparatively scarce academic attention. I contend, however, that the history of the Abbey--and of modern Irish theatre as a whole--cannot be properly understood except in relation to the strikingly different aesthetics practiced at the Gate. -

A Review of Ireland’s Immortals: A History of the Gods of Irish Myth Mark Williams, Ireland’s Immortals: A History of the Gods of Irish Myth (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 2016), hardback, pp. xvi+578, ISBN 9781400883325. Reviewed by Clare Downham he purpose of Mark Williams’s book is “to trace the divinities of Irish mythology—most frequently known as the Túatha Dé Danann […] from the Early Middle Ages through to the present” (xiii). The author Twrites as a literary critic rather than a historian, and this explains both the book’s strengths as well as its weaknesses. There is a sophisticated awareness in the book that the divine characters of literature bear a tenuous relationship with the gods of pre-Christian Ireland, and the representation of deities reflects the cultural mores of each passing generation. -

“The Song of Wandering Aengus” by W. B. Yeats: A Common Core Exemplar Traditional Irish Sources for “The Song of Wandering Aengus” Part 1. Allusions to Celtic Mythology In discussing the composition of “The Song of Wandering Aengus,” William Butler Yeats noted, “It was suggested to me by a Greek folksong; but the folk belief of Greece is very like that of Ireland, and I certainly thought, when I wrote it, of Ireland, and of the spirits that are in Ireland.” One of Yeats’s long standing passions was to revive traditional Irish culture, and one way he acted upon it was by integrating Celtic mythology and Irish folk lore into his written work. Yeats included several archetypal images in “The Song of Wandering Aengus” that have special significance in the Irish folk tradition: the fisherman, the silver trout, the hazel bough, and the apple. The fisherman archetype surfaces in various forms in this part of the world, especially in stories related to “selkies” with their scenes of fantastic shape shifting between seal and human form. The silver trout reflects the symbolic association fish carry in the Irish tradition with connotations related to health and fertility as well as knowledge, inspiration, and prophecy. The hazel is a sacred tree connected with immortal wisdom in Irish tree-lore. Stories in the Celtic tradition often place hazel trees at the border between worlds where magical things happen. Hazel is considered a container of ancient knowledge and, when ingested, hazel nuts were thought to heighten awareness and induce visions that led to epiphanies. -
