1 JERUSALEM: CITY OF DREAMS, CITY OF SORROWS More than ever before, urban historians tell us that global cities tend to look very much alike. For U.S. students. the“ look alike” perspective makes it more difficult to empathize with and to understand cultures and societies other than their own. The admittedly superficial similarities of global cities with U.S. ones leads to misunderstandings and confusion. The multiplicity of cybercafés, high-rise buildings, bars and discothèques, international hotels, restaurants, and boutique retailers in shopping malls and multiplex cinemas gives these global cities the appearances of familiarity. The ubiquity of schools, university campuses, signs, streetlights, and urban transportation systems can only add to an outsider’s “cultural and social blindness.” Prevailing U.S. learning goals that underscore American values of individualism, self-confidence, and material comfort are, more often than not, obstacles for any quick study or understanding of world cultures and societies by visiting U.S. student and faculty.1 Therefore, international educators need to look for and find ways in which their students are able to look beyond the veneer of the modern global city through careful program planning and learning strategies that seek to affect the students in their “reading and learning” about these fertile centers of liberal learning. As the students become acquainted with the streets, neighborhoods, and urban centers of their global city, their understanding of its ways and habits is embellished and enriched by the walls, neighborhoods, institutions, and archaeological sites that might otherwise cause them their “cultural and social blindness.” Jerusalem is more than an intriguing global historical city. -

Six-Month Report on Israeli Settlements in the Occupied West
Fri, 15/12/2017 - 10:11 NEWS STORIES Six-Month Report on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem ( January - June 2017) In the first half of 2017, a total of almost 8,000 settlement units in the West Bank including East Jerusalem were advanced in different stages in the planning and implementation process. Almost 5,000 housing units were promoted through plans and close to 3,000 housing units were advanced through tenders. This development will over several years enable potentially more than 30,000[1] Israeli settlers to move to the Occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The expansion of settlements occurred through a variety of methods, including the approval of a new settlement, the construction of housing units and public structures, the retroactive legalization of existing outposts and the declaration of Palestinian territory as Israeli “state land”. There are currently approximately 208,000 Israelis living in East Jerusalem while the settler population in area C in the occupied West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem is some 399,000. This brings the settler population to approximately 600,000 Israeli settlers in 142 locations in the West Bank (130) including East Jerusalem (12)[2]. According to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics 4.6 % of the total Israeli population resides today in the Occupied West Bank excluding East Jerusalem. A key development during the reporting period was the establishment of a new settlement, Amihai, in the West Bank in proximity to the existing settlement of Shilo, and in proximity of numerous outposts. In reality it is the first official settlement that is established by a government decision since 1992. -

Retail Prices in a City Alon Eizenberg Saul Lach The Hebrew University and CEPR The Hebrew University and CEPR Merav Yiftach Israel Central Bureau of Statistics February 2017 Abstract We study grocery price differentials across neighborhoods in a large metropolitan area (the city of Jerusalem, Israel). Prices in commercial areas are persistently lower than in residential neighborhoods. We also observe substantial price variation within residen- tial neighborhoods: retailers that operate in peripheral, non-a uent neighborhoods charge some of the highest prices in the city. Using CPI data on prices and neighborhood-level credit card data on expenditure patterns, we estimate a model in which households choose where to shop and how many units of a composite good to purchase. The data and the estimates are consistent with very strong spatial segmentation. Combined with a pricing equation, the demand estimates are used to simulate interventions aimed at reducing the cost of grocery shopping. We calculate the impact on the prices charged in each neighbor- hood and on the expected price paid by its residents - a weighted average of the prices paid at each destination, with the weights being the probabilities of shopping at each destina- tion. Focusing on prices alone provides an incomplete picture and may even be misleading. Specifically, we find that interventions that make the commercial areas more attractive and accessible yield only minor price reductions, yet expected prices decrease in a pronounced fashion. The benefits are particularly strong for residents of the peripheral, non-a uent neighborhoods. 29 June 2020 EUROPEAN UNION Office of the European Union Representative (West Bank and Gaza Strip, UNRWA) Six-Month Report on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem Reporting period July-December 2019 Summary Advancement of plans for settlement units in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, continued on a high level in the second half of 2019 (July-December). 5,627 settlement units were advanced in different stages of the planning and implementation process (only plans, no tenders). 981 of the units pertain to settlements located in occupied East Jerusalem, and 4,646 to settlements located in other parts of the West Bank, including in locations deep in the West Bank. 2019 saw the highest number of settlement units (9,666) advanced through plans in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in the last 5 years. At the same time, the total number of settlement units advanced through plans and tenders in 2019 (11,427), was lower than in both 2017 (12,354) and 2018 (12,857), but significantly higher than in 2015 (4,059) and 2016 (3,944). While plans and tenders indicate expected future construction activity, 1,528 units began actual construction in the West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem, in 2019, the lowest number since 2012 (1,213). Construction starts in East Jerusalem were also lower in 2019 (315), than in 2018 (837) and 2017 (1,143). There were other significant developments contributing to settlement expansion in the reporting period, including an approval to build a "bypass" road to the west of Bethlehem that will connect Jerusalem to the Gush Etzion settlements; the advancement of a plan for a cable car project and other settlement activities related to tourism endeavours in and around the Old City in East Jerusalem; the retroactive authorization of outposts; the eviction of a Palestinian single mother and her four children from their home in Wadi al Hilweh in East Jerusalem; as well as the continuation of settler-related violence in the West Bank. -

During the War of 1948, Jewish forces captured much of the territory assigned to the proposed Arab state, including 85% of Jerusalem (mainly in the city’s western part and surrounding neighborhoods). The Jordanian Arab Legion took control of the West Bank, including 11% of the eastern part of Jerusalem (including the Old City and adjacent villages). The remaining 4% of the Jerusalem area was considered no-man's land in which the UN established its headquarters. Some 64,000-80,000 Palestinians fled the western part of Jerusalem and the nearby villages. In June 1948, their property came under the control of the Israeli ‘Custodian of Absentee Property’. Some 40 Palestinian villages in and around Jerusalem were depopulated, many of them destroyed.
