The Dashanpu Dinosaur Fauna of Zigong Sichuan Short Report V - Labyrinthodont Amphibia Zhiming Dong (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology, Paleoanthropology, Academia Sinica) Vertebrata PalAsiatica Volume XXIII, No. 4 October, 1985 pp. 301-305 Translated by Will Downs Department of Geology Bilby Research Center Northern Arizona University December, 1990 Abstract A brief discussion is presented on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic position of Sinobrachyops placenticephalus (gen. et sp. nov.). The specimen is derived from the well-known Middle Jurassic Dashanpu dinosaur quarries of Zigong County, Sichaun Province. Sinobrachyops is the youngest geological occurrence of a labyrinthodont amphibian known to date. Its discovery extends the upper geochronological limit for the Labyrinthodontia into the Middle Jurassic. Introduction The first fossils collected from Dashanpu, Zigong, in 1979, were a pair of rhachitomous vertebrae. This discovery created a sense of perplexity among the workers, for the morphology of these pleurocentra and intercentra suggested an assignment to the Labyrinthodontia. This group of amphibians, however, was traditionally believed to have become extinct in the Late Triassic, a traditional concept that must be abandoned if scientific investigation is to be advanced and left unfettered. In 1983 the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology, Paleoanthropology Academia Sinica launched a paleontological expedition in the Shishugou Formation (Middle-Late Jurassic) from the Kelameili region, northeast Jungar Basin, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, where several rhachitomous vertebrae were discovered. Later, a fragmentary skull of a labyrinthodont amphibian was collected, confirming that this group extended into the Middle Jurassic. The discovery from the Shishugou Formation convinced the workers that the rhachitomous vertebrae at Dashanpu belonged to the Labyrinthodontia. -

Only two such giant “raptors” have been described from North America. Here, we describe a new giant dromaeosaurid, Dakotaraptor steini gen. et sp. nov., from the Hell Creek Formation of South Dakota. The discovery represents the first giant dromaeosaur from the Hell Creek Formation, and the most recent in the fossil record worldwide. A row of prominent ulnar papilli or “quill knobs” on the ulna is our first clear evidence for feather quills on a large dromaeosaurid forearm and impacts evolutionary reconstructions and functional morphology of such derived, typically flight-related features. -

PROGRAM OVERVIEW TOPIC: Small theropods commonly known as “raptors.” THEME: Explore the adaptations that made raptors unique and successful, like claws, intelligence, vision, speed, and hollow bones. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Razor-sharp teeth and sickle-like claws are just a few of the characteristics that have made raptors famous. Working in groups, students will build a working model of a raptor leg and then bring it to life while competing in a relay race that simulates the hunting techniques of these carnivorous animals. AUDIENCE: Grades 3–6 CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: Grade 3 Science: Building with a Variety of Materials Grade 3–6 Math: Patterns and Relations Grade 4 Science: Building Devices and Vehicles that Move Grade 6 Science: Evidence and Investigation PROGRAM ObJECTIVES: 1. Students will understand the adaptations that contributed to the success of small theropods. 2. Students will explore the function of the muscles used in vertebrate movement and the mechanics of how a raptor leg works. 3. Students will understand the function of the raptorial claw. 4. Students will discover connections between small theropod dinosaurs and birds. SUGGESTED PRE-VISIT ACTIVITIES UNDERstANDING CLADIstICS Animals and plants are often referred to as part of a family or group. For example, the dog is part of the canine family (along with wolves, coyotes, foxes, etc.). Scientists group living things together based on relationships to gain insight into where they came from. This helps us identify common ancestors of different organisms. This method of grouping is called “cladistics.” Cladistics is a system that uses branches like a family tree to show how organisms are related to one another. -

The holotype was firstly named and reported in an abstract of a lecture by Ouyang, 1992, since when it has never been detailed studied and the taxonomic position of Gigantspinosaurus is also vague. The morphological redescription shows that G. sichuanensis is a medium-sized stegosaur, with external mandibular foramen developed. The ratio of femur to humerus is large, and the intersacral fenestrae are big. According to the wear degree of teeth, the holotype of G. sichuanensis is regarded as an adult individual. On the basis of the recent data matrix of stegosaurs and the characters revisions of G. sichuanensis, its phylogenetic position has been determined again. &<9/xmefe Appendix: A Chronological History of Dinosaur Paleontology This appendix is compiled from numerous sources, and summarizes some of the key personalities, events, and discoveries that have shaped our under- M. K. Brett-Surman standing of dinosaur paleontology. The appendix consists of two parts. Part 1 presents a chronological list of some of the more important historical developments in dinosaur paleontology. Part 2 synthesizes this information by organizing the history of dinosaur studies into a series of "ages," each characterized by certain defining features of the sciences at that time. Part 1: A Chronology of Dinosaur Studies 300 B.C.E. (date approximate) Chang Qu writes about dinosaur ("dragon") bones in Wucheng (Sichuan), China. 1677 The first report of a "human thigh bone of one of the giants mentioned in the Bible" by Reverend Plot of England. 1763 R. Brookes publishes a figure referred to Scrotum bumanum based on Reverend Plot's 1676 figure. This specimen, believed to be the distal end of a femur, is now referred to a megalosaurid. 1787 First dinosaur found in Gloucester County, New Jersey, by Matlack (Matelock?) and Caspar Wistar of Philadelphia. A description is read before the American Philosophical Society on October 5, 1787, but it will not be published for 75 years. It is reported at a meeting with Ben Franklin at Franklin's house. The specimen is believed to be at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. 1800 Pliny Moody (a student at Williams College) locates fossils on his farm in Connecticut. These dinosaur footprints were called "footprints of Noah's Raven" at the time by Harvard and Yale scientists, even though they were 1 foot long. -

THE DISCOVERY OF THE BONY TAIL CLUB OF SAUROPODS* Dong Zhiming Peng Guangzhao Huang Daxi (Zigong Dinosaur Museum) Key words Zigong Sichuan Province; Sauropoda; Bony tail club Original English Abstract There have been 15 pieces of the bony tail club of sauropods found in the Lower Shaximiao Formation of Middle Jurassic in the Dinosaurian Quarry of Dashanpu, Zigong, Sichuan Province, China. Both of the two groups of sauropods in the Shunosaurus fauna of Dashanpu—Shunosaurus Iii and Omeisaurus tianfuensis have a bony club at the end of the tail. It has never been reported that sauropods have a bony tail club. This discovery shows that sauropods are a group of terrestrial dinosaurs, and it proves that R. T. Bakker's theory is probably correct. The characteristics of the morphology and structure of these bony tail clubs are described in this paper. The main features of the bony clubs are as follows: The shape of the bony clubs is ellipspheroidal or spindle-shaped. The anterior and posterior parts are narrow and middle part is inflated. These clubs are fused with 3–5 distal caudal vertebrae. The fused lines between the vertebrae can be seen· on the ventral part. The neural spines of the anterior vertebrae of the bony clubs are present and low, and that of the posterior vertebrae have disappeared. The neural foramen is small, runs through the whole bony club, and forms a U-shaped trough at the end. The haemal arches and diapophysis have disappeared. The main function of the bony tail clubs of sauropods, like that of ankylosaurs, is for defense.
