Carleton College The Islamic Legacy in the Iberian Peninsula April 30-May 13, 2005 Day 1 Saturday April 30, 2005 Madrid Arrive in Madrid. Transfer on your own to hotel. (Transportation instructions will be provided) Check in hotel Emperador. 9:00 pm Welcome dinner. Overnight Hotel Emperador. (D) Day 2 Sunday May 1, 2005 Madrid- Toledo-Madrid 9:00 am Lecture by Professor Haworth. 10.00 am Departure for Toledo. Positioned on the Tagus River and boasting of medieval architecture, Toledo was once the capital of Spain until 1560. 11:00 am Visits to Santo Tome church and Santa Maria Synagogue. 1:30 pm Group lunch. 3:30 pm Visit one of the most impressive Cathedrals in Spain, Toledo’s Cathedral. The great El Greco collection makes this not only a Cathedral, but a museum as well. 5:00 pm Return to Madrid and remainder of evening on your own. Overnight Hotel Emperador. (B,L) Day 3 Monday May 2, 2205 Madrid 9:00-10:00 am Lecture by Professor Haworth. 10:30 am Panoramic orientation city tour of Madrid and visit to the Prado Museum. The Prado holds more than 10,000 pieces of art, paintings, sculptures, furniture and jewelry dating from the 6th to the 19th century. 2:00 pm Group Lunch. 3:30 Visit the Palacio Real commissioned in the early 18th century by the first of Spain's Bourbon rulers, Felipe V, on the same strategic site where Madrid's first Alcázar (Moorish fortress) was built in the 9th century. Walking tour of “Madrid de los Austrias,” an area of town squares, palaces, churches, and civil buildings developed under, King Phillip II. 6:30 pm Return to hotel. Dinner on your own. (B, L) Day 4 Tuesday May 3, 2005 Madrid-Cordoba 9:00 am Hotel check out. 10:00 am High speed train to Cordoba, a city founded by the Romans and valued as a strategic point for their sea faring trade of wines, olive oil, and wheat, back to Ancient Rome. It then became the Moorish capital of El-Andalus when the great construction of the famous Mezquita mosque began. 12:30 pm Group lunch. 2:30 pm Check in Hotel Macia Alfaros. 3:30 pm Visit to The Mezquita, the old Jewish Quarter and the synagogue. Cordoba's medieval quarter, once the home of the Jewish community, is called "La Judería" (The Jewry), a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets, shady flower-filled courtyards and picturesque squares such as La Plaza del Potro. In early May, homeowners proudly festoon their patios with flowers to compete for the city's "most beautiful courtyard" contest. 6:00 pm Return to hotel. Dinner on your own. (B,L) Day 5 Wednesday May 4, 2005 Cordoba 11:00 am Visit to the alcazar, the archaeological museum and the chapel of San Bartolome. 2:00 pm Remainder of the evening free to explore Cordoba at leisure. Overnight Hotel Macia Alfaros. (B) Day 6 Thursday May 5, 2005 Cordoba-Jaen-Granada 9:00 am Depart for Granada with a stop in Jaen. 10.00 am Arrival in Jaen. Visit hilltop castle of Santa Catalina and the Arab Baths. 1:30 pm Group lunch at Jaen’s parador, which sits on the crest of the Santa Catalina Hill and forms part of the Moorish castle. The views from the parador are fantastic and it has been said that this parador is by far the finest in the country. 3.00 pm Departure for Granada. 4.30 pm Hotel Check in. 5:00 pm Guided visit of Granada, including the Cathedral and Royal Chapel. 8:00 pm Return to Hotel. Dinner on your own. Overnight Hotel Alhambra Palace. (B,L) Day 7 Friday May 6, 2005 Granada 10:00 am Lecture by Professor Haworth. Free morning and lunch on your own. 2:30 pm Guided visit to The Alhambra and the Generalife gardens. The Alhambra is a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This mighty compound of buildings – including the summer palace called Generalife, with its fountains and gardens - stands at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada. Created originally for military purposes, the Alhambra was an alcazaba (fortress), an alcázar (palace) and a small medina (city), all in one. This triple character helps to explain many distinctive features of the monument. 5:30 pm Return to hotel. Dinner on your own. 9:00 pm Flamenco show at the Gypsy caves of Sacromonte. Overnight Hotel Alhambra Palace. (B) Day 8 Saturday May 7, 2005 Granada-Ronda-Sevilla 10:00 am Depart for Seville with a stop-over in Ronda. 12:00 pm Visit the Palacio Mondragon and bullring. The Palacio is believed to have been the residence of the Arab king Abb el Malik, son of the Sultan of Morocco. 2:00 pm Lunch on your own. 4:00 pm Depart for Sevilla, the largest city in southern Spain and said to be the birthplace of Flamenco. 6:30 pm Check in Hotel Becquer. Remainder of the evening on your own. Overnight Hotel Becquer. (B) Day 9 Sunday May 8, 2005 Sevilla 9:30-10:30 am Lecture by Professor Haworth. 11:00 am Panoramic city tour visiting Paseo de Colon, Barrio Santa Cruz, Jardines Murillo, and Maestranza. 12:30 pm Lunch on your own. 2:00 pm Continue touring Seville including the Cathedral and Tower of Gold. 5:00 pm Return to hotel. Remainder of the evening on your own. Overnight Hotel Becquer. (B) Day 10 Monday May 9, 2005 Sevilla-Mertola-Evora 9:00 am Depart for Evora (Portugal) with a stop at Mertola. 11:00 am Visit Mertola’s 'nucleo'. 1:00 pm Lunch on your own. 2:30 pm Departure for Evora. Conquered by the Romans in 59 BC, this city has over two millennia of history. Its narrow streets evoke memories of the Moorish presence. 4:00 pm Check in Pousada dos loios Evora, originally a 15th century convent situated in the heart of historic Evora. Remainder of evening on your own. Overnight Pousada dos Loios. (B) Day 11 Tuesday May 10, 2005 Evora-Lisbon 9:00 am Guided city tour of Evora. Visit the Church of St. Frances, chapel of bones & the Roman Temple of Diana. 12:00 pm Return to hotel and check out. Lunch on your own. 1:00 pm Depart for Lisbon. 3:00 pm Visit to Quinta da Bacalhoa, a classic renaissance garden with a Portuguese flavor, in the vicinity of the town of Setubal. The palace is considered one of the loveliest country houses in Portugal. 7:00 pm Arrive in Lisbon. Check in Hotel Fenix. Dinner on your own. Overnight Hotel Fenix. (B) Day 12 Wednesday May 11, 2005 Lisbon 9:00 am Lecture by Professor Haworth. 10:30 am Visit various subway stations in the Moorish tile tradition. 12:00 pm Visit the National Museum of Azulejo (tiles), which houses the foremost collection of Portuguese tile in the world. Many of the tile works in the Azulejo Museum record the history of Lisbon. 1:00 pm Group lunch. 2:00 pm Visit Palacio Fronteira, a beautiful garden distinguished by its great stairways, water tanks, and colored glazed tiles dating from the 1660s. 4:30 pm Return to hotel and remainder of afternoon on your own. Overnight Hotel Fenix. (B,L) Day 13 Thursday May 12, 2005 Lisbon-Sintra-Lisbon 9:00 am Full day trip to Sintra, known in ancient times as Mons Lunae (the Hills of the Moon). Sintra still retains its essentially mediaeval layout, with narrow and labyrinthine streets, steps and arcades. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site for its pioneering approach to Romantic landscaping which had an outstanding influences on developments elsewhere in Europe. Visit to the Palace. Lunch on your own. 3:00 pm Return to Lisbon. 9:00 pm Farewell dinner at Caas do Leao, Castelo de Sao George. Overnight Hotel Fenix.
