The importance of the Tyrwhitt Drake Armada Portrait © Melanie V Taylor June 2016 The Tyrwhitt Drake Armada portrait of Elizabeth I has been put up for sale by the descendants of Sir Francis Drake who have owned this painting since 1775. Of the three Armada portraits, it is by far, the most superior. Like the other two, it is dripping in symbolism, but there are subtle differences between the two landscape format paintings and similarities between The Woburn Abbey Armada Portrait and that held by the National Portrait Gallery (NPG). The NPG painting has been cut down at some time, probably because it did not fit a certain space NPG portrait. What remains in the NPG version is the central figure of the queen and some elements of the background similar to the Woburn Abbey version. These elements are the columns of red with gold coloured bases, which suggests these two paintings may have come from the same workshop. In 1563 Sir William Cecil drew up a draft proclamation regarding the use of the queen’s portrait because there were so many portraits that bore no resemblance to her. There was no official template for a royal portrait; neither was there a ‘special person’ appointed to provide an approved template for use by artists’ workshops. It was not until later in her reign that George Gower was appointed Serjeant Painter, and Nicholas Hilliard became her sole portrayer in miniature portraits. Both were Englishmen, and Hilliard, like Sir Francis Drake, was a Devon man. In my opinion, a superior artist has painted the Tyrwhitt-Drake portrait. -

Architecture Click here for a fuller account of Elizabeth. One of the principle events of the reign of Elizabeth was the defeat of the Spanish Armada (here's the BBC Armada site). Elizabeth's famous (and short) speech before the battle can be found here. England's power grew mightily in this period, which is reflected in the lives and achievements of contemporary 'heroes' such as Sir Francis Drake, fearless fighter against the Spanish who circumnavigated the globe, and Sir Walter Raleigh (nowadays pronounced Rawley), one of those who established the first British colonies across the Atlantic (and who spelt his name in over 40 different ways...). Raleigh is generally 'credited' with the commercial introduction of tobacco into England .about 1778, and possibly of the potato. On a lighter note, information on Elizabethan costume is available here (including such items as farthingales and bumrolls). Literature Drama and the theatre The Elizabethan age is the golden age of English drama, for which the establishment of permanent theatres is not least responsible. As performances left the inn-yards and noble houses for permanent sites in London, the demand for drama increased enormously. While some of the smaller theatres were indoors, it is the purpose-built round/square/polygonal buildings such as The Theatre (the first, built in 1576), the Curtain (late 1570s?), the Rose (1587), the Swan (1595), the Fortune (1600) and of course the Globe (1599) that are most characteristic of the period. -

ATR/97.1 Real Presence, Spiritual Presence: Assessing Thomas Cranmer’s Appropriation of St. Ambrose’s Eucharistic Doctrine Daniel Marrs* While Thomas Cranmer’s frequent appeals to the church fathers are often noted, focused evaluations of his theological use of par- ticular patristic sources remain lacking. In a manner both histori- cal and theological, the present article assesses the nature and quality of Thomas Cranmer’s appropriation of Ambrose of Milan’s doctrine of Christ’s eucharistic presence. Devoting special atten- tion to Cranmer’s A Defence, in which he makes extensive use of Ambrose’s De mysteriis and De sacramentis, the author contends that Cranmer’s engagement with Ambrose contextualizes and in- forms his final vision of Christ’s presence in the eucharist, and is therefore able to bring greater clarity to the ongoing debates sur- rounding Cranmer’s understanding of eucharistic presence.
