Webster University FLST 3160: Topics in Film Studies: Screwball Comedy Instructor: Dr. Diane Carson, Ph.D. Email: [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on classic screwball comedies from the 1930s and 40s. Films studied include It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth, and The Lady Eve. Thematic as well as technical elements will be analyzed. Actors include Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, and Barbara Stanwyck. Class involves lectures, discussions, written analysis, and in-class screenings. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this course is to analyze and inform students about the screwball comedy genre. By the end of the semester, students should have: 1. An understanding of the basic elements of screwball comedies including important elements expressed cinematically in illustrative selections from noteworthy screwball comedy directors. 2. An ability to analyze music and sound, editing (montage), performance, camera movement and angle, composition (mise-en-scene), screenwriting and directing and to understand how these technical elements contribute to the screwball comedy film under scrutiny. 3. An ability to apply various approaches to comic film analysis, including consideration of aesthetic elements, sociocultural critiques, and psychoanalytic methodology. 4. An understanding of diverse directorial styles and the effect upon the viewer. 5. An ability to analyze different kinds of screwball comedies from the earliest example in 1934 through the genre’s development into the early 40s. 6. Acquaintance with several classic screwball comedies and what makes them unique. 7. An ability to think critically about responses to the screwball comedy genre and to have insight into the films under scrutiny. -

This thesis addresses those gaps in the literature. A qualitative interview analysis was conducted with ten male film consumers who reported their ideas, opinions and experiences with the top ten highest-grossing romantic comedies from 2009-2015. As a result, five main themes emerged, which are (a) men cite romantic comedies as setting unrealistic expectations for relationships; (b) men are put off by the predictability of the genre; (c) men do not consume the genre with other men; (d) men use romantic comedies as a learning tool; and, (e) men cite drama in relationships as the most relatable aspect of romantic comedies. The data set was rich and descriptive in nature and the qualitative interview analysis supported the advancement of four theories, including Social Cognitive Theory, Cultivation Theory, Third-person Effect Theory and Spiral of Silence Theory. -

Abstract: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again. With this formula it seems that romantic comedies are actually meant for men instead of women. If this is the case, then why do women watch these films? The repetition of female stars like Katharine Hepburn, Doris Day and Meg Ryan in romantic comedies allows audiences to find elements of truth in their characters as they grapple with the input of others in their life choices, combat the anxiety of being single, and prove they are less sexually naïve than society would like to admit. -

By interrogating the power dynamics between the Party-state, domestic capital and transnational media capital, this thesis explores respective roles each of the three stakeholders have played in shaping the commercialization and marketization of the Chinese film industry. Methodically, this thesis primarily relies on elite interviews with industry professionals, together with critical discourse analysis of one key policy document, and secondary data collected from news outlets, trade publications, industry reports, etc. -

Students will be expected to recognise specific film genre conventions from the specification’s set list of six core genres, and also to use them in their own creative practice. The current list of set core genres is: • Horror; • Western; • Action/Adventure; • Romantic Comedy; • Science Fiction; • Crime. CCEA will review the list of set genres every two years. Students should be able to recognise and identify the following characteristic elements within each of the set genres: Element Description Iconography Genre films can be identified by key iconic images. Setting Some genres have a distinct location or time period associated with them. Narrative Genre films employ specific story structures and narrative devices. Characters Some characters are associated with particular genres and can attain the status of generic types. Style Genre films can be identified by specific visual and audio techniques. Theme Genre films often have characteristic themes. This booklet contains fact sheets on each of the six set genres and provides some examples of genre specific conventions and characteristics. Some recommended films for each genre are also listed. 4 Genre and the Audience Students should be able to recognise the role of audience and how it informs the storytelling styles and conventions followed by the set genres. It should be clear to students what type of audiences certain genres are primarily aimed at. -

The projection of romantic track become priority no matters whether the film belongs to action, comic, horror or suspense-based theme. Romantic genre introduces the idea of escapism and entertainment among the real life of its viewers by fantasizing dreamy world. Romantic Genre of Bollywood teaches how to behave and proceed in love relationship. Youth take these films as supporting guidelines by imitating themselves in particular character of film having popularity or similarity to their life. Genres and generic conventions Below is a list of some of the main genres in film. For each genre there are broad descriptions of typical plots and characters, some aspects of mise- en-scene and theme. Genre is a very fluid idea however, and a film may not easily fit into just one genre, so sub-genres are also listed. Each description features some gaps for you to fill in- these are the names of each genre. Read the description carefully and choose one of the following genres to add into the gaps. ACTION | ADVENTURE | COMEDY | CRIME & GANGSTER | DRAMA | EPICS & HISTORICAL | HORROR | MUSICAL | SCIENCE FICTION | WAR | WESTERNS EXTENSION: for each, list 2 or 3 reasons why each example film fits in with that genre. Conventions Example films _______ are serious films. They are driven by intense plots that aim to portray realistic characters, settings, situations and stories that involve intense character development. ______ tend to eschew special-effects or action though some of these elements may feature. Traditionally, ______ films are probably the largest film genre but perhaps because it is a very broad genre that can apply to a wide range of sub genres. Some examples include melodramas, epics (historical dramas), or romantic genres. ______ biographical films (or "biopics") are a major sub-genre. 1 _________ films are exciting stories, with interesting experiences and set pieces set in a variety of exotic locales. Whilst featuring many similar aspects to the action genre, _______ films tend to see characters travelling around trying to find a Macguffin. These films can include traditional swashbucklers, serialised films, expeditions for lost continents, explorations of jungles, deserts or even space, treasure hunts and any other form of “search” or “hunt”. -

Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr. Charu C Mishra Assoc. Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times. -
