  • CRUISE MISSILE THREAT Volume 2: Emerging Cruise Missile Threat
By Systems Assessment Group NDIA Strike, Land Attack and Air Defense Committee August 1999 FEASIBILITY OF THIRD WORLD ADVANCED BALLISTIC AND CRUISE MISSILE THREAT Volume 2: Emerging Cruise Missile Threat The Systems Assessment Group of the National Defense Industrial Association ( NDIA) Strike, Land Attack and Air Defense Committee performed this study as a continuing examination of feasible Third World missile threats. Volume 1 provided an assessment of the feasibility of the long range ballistic missile threats (released by NDIA in October 1998). Volume 2 uses aerospace industry judgments and experience to assess Third World cruise missile acquisition and development that is “emerging” as a real capability now. The analyses performed by industry under the broad title of “Feasibility of Third World Advanced Ballistic & Cruise Missile Threat” incorporate information only from unclassified sources. Commercial GPS navigation instruments, compact avionics, flight programming software, and powerful, light-weight jet propulsion systems provide the tools needed for a Third World country to upgrade short-range anti-ship cruise missiles or to produce new land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs) today. This study focuses on the question of feasibility of likely production methods rather than relying on traditional intelligence based primarily upon observed data. Published evidence of technology and weapons exports bears witness to the failure of international agreements to curtail cruise missile proliferation. The study recognizes the role LACMs developed by Third World countries will play in conjunction with other new weapons, for regional force projection. LACMs are an “emerging” threat with immediate and dire implications for U.S. freedom of action in many regions .

  • Aces of the Luftwaffe
Aces of the Luftwaffe Below are profiles of some of the Luftwaffe’s greatest pilots. Germany had the top 108 scoring aces of the Second World War, with scores ranging from 352 to 99 kills (for the top 108). The term ace can mean different things for different countries. Wikipedia puts it as this: “In World War II, many air forces credited fractional shares of aerial victories, resulting in fractions or decimal scores, such as 11½ or 26.83. Some U.S. commands also credited aircraft destroyed on the ground as equal to aerial victories. The Soviets distinguished between solo and group kills, as did the Japanese, though the IJN stopped crediting individual victories in 1943. The Luftwaffe continued the tradition of "one pilot, one kill", and now referred to top scorers as experten.” So German pilots got a kill for every aircraft they shot down. Name: Erich Hartmann Life: April 19, 1922 – September 20, 1993 Kills: 352 Notes: Erich Hartmann is the top scoring ace of all time, of any country. His 352 kills are 51 more than that of his closest rival, Gerhard Barkhorn. 345 of his kills were against the Soviets, as he fought mainly on the Ostfront (Eastern Front), and 260 of these were fighters. He also won the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub, Schwerten und Brillianten (Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds), the second highest award in the German forces. He was imprisoned by the Soviets for 10 and a half years, and once released, went to West Germany and was put in charge of the post war JG 71 “Richtofen”, and retired in 1970.

Motivation for Air-Launch: Past, Present, and Future John W. Kelly,* Charles E. Rogers,† Gregory T. Brierly,‡ J. Campbell Martin,§ and Marshall G. Murphy** NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Edwards, California, 93523 “Air-launch” is defined as two or more air-vehicles joined and working together, that eventually separate in flight, and that have a combined performance greater than the sum of the individual parts. The use of the air-launch concept has taken many forms across civil, commercial, and military contexts throughout the history of aviation. Air-launch techniques have been applied for entertainment, movement of materiel and personnel, efficient execution of aeronautical research, increasing aircraft range, and enabling flexible and efficient launch of space vehicles. • DCS Fw 190 A-8 Flight Manual DCS [Fw 190 A-8]
Fw190A-8 ANTON DCS Fw 190 A-8 Flight Manual DCS [Fw 190 A-8] Dear User, We thank you for your purchase of DCS: Fw 190 A-8, a simulation of the legendary German World War II fighter. Like previous DCS titles, DCS: Fw 190 D-9 features a painstakingly reproduced model of the aircraft, including the external model and cockpit, as well as all of the mechanical systems and aerodynamic properties. Along the lines of our flagship P-51D Mustang title, DCS: Fw 190 A-8 places you behind the controls of a powerful, propeller-driven, piston-engine combat aircraft. Designed long before “fly-by-wire” technology was available to assist the pilot in flight control or smart bombs and beyond visual range missiles were developed to engage targets with precision from afar, the Fw 190 A-8 is a personal and exhilarating challenge to master. This powerful and deadly craft should prove to be both an exhilarating combat experience to its drivers, and a worthy challenge to all fans of the DCS: P-51D Mustang and Spitfire LF Mk. IX. As operators of one of the largest collections of restored World War II aircraft, we at The Fighter Collection and the development team at Eagle Dynamics were fortunate to be able to take advantage of our intimate knowledge of WWII aviation to ensure the DCS model is one of the most accurate virtual reproductions of this aircraft ever made. Combined with volumes of outside research and documentation, the field trips to the TFC hangar and countless consultations and tests by TFC pilots were invaluable in the creation of this simulation.

  • Luftwaffe's Secret KG 200
Luftwaffe's Secret KG 200 KG 200 took part in many covert missions against the Allies and became the subject of much postwar speculation. By Andrew J. Swanger for World War II Magazine The history of the German Luftwaffe in World War II has been examined by scores of authors and eyewitnesses. The case of Kampfgeschwader (Battle Wing) 200, or KG 200, is a different story, however. The real story of this special Luftwaffe unit has remained shrouded in mystery, and most members maintained their silence after the war. The commander of the unit, Colonel Werner Baumbach, a winner of the Knight's Cross and a celebrated Junkers Ju-88 bomber pilot, did not even mention KG 200 in his memoirs, Broken Swastika. KG 200 was a unique unit, which operated a wide variety of aircraft--from the Blohm und Voss Bv-222 Wiking (the largest flying boat of the era) to the Junkers Ju-52, Ju- 90, Ju-290 and Ju-188, the Heinkel He-111, and even captured British and American aircraft such as the Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. The earliest incarnation of KG 200 was Special Squadron Rowehl, a unit subordinate to the Abwehr, the German military intelligence organization. Colonel Theodor Rowehl, who had been a reconnaissance pilot in World War I, heard rumors that Poland was building new forts along its border with Germany. Now a civilian, Rowehl began flying photoreconnaissance missions over Poland in civilian aircraft. (Military planes were not allowed to fly in that area.) The Abwehr was impressed with Rowehl's photographs and paid him to continue his flights.
