Jonathan Aylen* and Mike Pryce* Manchester Institute of Innovation Research Manchester Business School University of Manchester “Every aeroplane is different ‐ a self‐optimising shambles” Ralph Hooper, Harrier project designer Aerospace engineers face the task of developing a project from overall design concept through to working prototype and on into sustained use. Engineers often work in small groups when developing an initial concept. Once the basic concept has been agreed they may work in similarly small groups, or as part of larger teams to develop key components of a system. At this stage key design tasks are defined and delegated and then the resulting components are tested and integrated to build a prototype (Vincenti, 1990). Individual sub‐assemblies are usually developed in parallel. So, aeronautical engineering is often seen as a cyclical process of analysis and synthesis, although in practice it is seldom so neat and linear, as the opening quote from a leading practitioner, Ralph Hooper, illustrates. The nature of engineering design is complex, with designers having to cope with many systems and components interacting in dynamic ways. The breadth and depth of knowledge required means no one person can carry out all the tasks of engineering design. Group or team working is essential. Engineering design is an innately social activity. However, mastering the specific skills of any one discipline, and also learning how to utilise the knowledge gained within the group or team, often depends on the abilities of key individuals.

    By Systems Assessment Group NDIA Strike, Land Attack and Air Defense Committee August 1999 FEASIBILITY OF THIRD WORLD ADVANCED BALLISTIC AND CRUISE MISSILE THREAT Volume 2: Emerging Cruise Missile Threat The Systems Assessment Group of the National Defense Industrial Association ( NDIA) Strike, Land Attack and Air Defense Committee performed this study as a continuing examination of feasible Third World missile threats. Volume 1 provided an assessment of the feasibility of the long range ballistic missile threats (released by NDIA in October 1998). Volume 2 uses aerospace industry judgments and experience to assess Third World cruise missile acquisition and development that is “emerging” as a real capability now. The analyses performed by industry under the broad title of “Feasibility of Third World Advanced Ballistic & Cruise Missile Threat” incorporate information only from unclassified sources. Commercial GPS navigation instruments, compact avionics, flight programming software, and powerful, light-weight jet propulsion systems provide the tools needed for a Third World country to upgrade short-range anti-ship cruise missiles or to produce new land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs) today. This study focuses on the question of feasibility of likely production methods rather than relying on traditional intelligence based primarily upon observed data. Published evidence of technology and weapons exports bears witness to the failure of international agreements to curtail cruise missile proliferation. The study recognizes the role LACMs developed by Third World countries will play in conjunction with other new weapons, for regional force projection. LACMs are an “emerging” threat with immediate and dire implications for U.S. freedom of action in many regions .

Kedward University of California at Santa Barbara Department of Mechanical & Environmental Engineering Santa Barbara, California 93106-5070, USA SUMMARY: The state of maturity of contemporary PMC’s after almost 30 years of scientific and technology development has resulted in a capability that far exceeds that available in the late 1960’s, and which, in 1989, prompted General Electric to engage in the notably successful development and flight certification of large PMC fan blades for their GE90 engine. In this paper an accounting of the specific enhancements in (i) constituent (fiber and matrix) property characteristics, (ii) fabrication and processing options, and (iii) design analysis methods combined with computational capabilities will be discussed. However, an equally important aspect is the variation in the design options that has resulted from evolving high by-pass ratio engine technology, which will also be addressed. The GE90 fan blade represents one of these options, being a relatively large blade designed to operate at lower tip speeds, thereby reducing the severity of the impact threat represented by the ingestion of large birds. A comparison between various modern turbofan engine fan blades and other rotor blades serves to indicate the important parameters and the difficulty of establishing a composite threshold range for rotor blades in general. The X-35 concept demonstrator program incorporated some that were deemed critical to establish the technical credibility and readiness to enter the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) program. Key among them were the elements of the F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing propulsion system using the revolutionary shaft-driven LiftFan® system. However, due to X- 35 schedule constraints and technical risks, the incorporation of some technologies was deferred to the SDD program. Allenstein © 2013 ABSTRACT Model testing offers investigators a useful tool that can provide good insight into the aerodynamics behind full-scale engines and test facilities. Understanding the aerodynamics of a full-scale engine can help investigators update old test facilities and help design new facilities and engines. Gold-plating an engine is a process that the industry uses to compare the performance of an engine from the same family or class of engines in various facilities. The gold-plated engine can be used to determine a correlation factor of a testing facility or to determine the similarities in performance between a new or old engine to the gold-plated engine. The use of a correlation or correction factor can be used to correct a deviation in a measurement made in a test facility to bring the engine’s performance back to readings performed in a “free-air” environment. Model testing consists of the use of a simulator or scaled version of an engine that generates performance close to full-scale operation conditions. The simulator used in this study was constructed to not have any moving parts but rather be driven by a high pressure air system, providing a safe alternative to testing the full-scale engine.
