Creating Holy People and People Places Holy on theCreating Periphery Creating Holy People and Places on the Periphery A Study of the Emergence of Cults of Native Saints in the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Lund and Uppsala from the Eleventh to the Thirteenth Centuries During the medieval period, the introduction of a new belief system brought profound societal change to Scandinavia. One of the elements of this new religion was the cult of saints. This thesis examines the emergence of new cults of saints native to the region that became the ecclesiastical provinces of Lund and Uppsala in the twelfth century. The study examines theearliest, extant evidence for these cults, in particular that found in liturgical fragments. By analyzing and then comparing the relationship that each native saint’s cult had to the Christianization, the study reveals a mutually beneficial bond between these cults and a newly emerging Christian society. ”In 100 meters turn left by the runestone” -A least cost path and spatial statistics study, of the Scanian runestones; in relation to Viking Age infrastructure. @ Lantmäteriet Dnr: i2012/927 Department of Archaeology and Ancient History Masters thesis in Archaeology (ARKM21, spring 2013) Author: Gabriel B. N. Norburg Supervisor: Fredrik Ekengren Assistant Supervisor: Nicolò Dell’Unto Examiner: Kristina Jennbert 1 A son is better, though late he be born, And his father to death have fared; Memory-stones seldom stand by the road, save when kinsman honors his kin. —Hávamál 1:72 Abstract This thesis concerns the patterns of organization visible within the context that is the Scanian runestones in relation to roads, organized clustering and energy-conservativity. As well as the digital methods increasingly used to analyze such patterns. Using FMIS databases and LIDAR-elevation data it analyses the long, spread out lines of runestones visible in the landscape through GIS spatial- statistics analysis, as well as least cost path analysis, and simultaneously evaluates the combination of the runestones and said tools, as a method for studying Viking Age infrastructure. The statistical part of the analysis includes all of the Scanian runestones, and compares the organization grade (z-score and k-function) of the Scanian runestones to the organization grade of the Scanian milestones; the organization grade of the Gotland mile- and runestones are briefly discussed as a comparative material. The results of this analysis indicate a very high level of organized clustering within Scanian runestone context, one comparable to the level of organization we see among the Gotland Milestones.

Made in the United States of America ©C!,A446580 TO MY FRIEND ELLA MAY ADAMS PREFACE As every one knows, the mother land of the American nation is England. But what is the grandmother land? A short glance at England's past will show that it is Scandinavia. Though the English people are exceedingly composite, there exists in them a very important Scandinavian strain. The Northern blood was contributed primarily by two great immigrations directly from Scandinavia, and one from Normandy, by people only a century and a half removed from Scandinavia ; but it should be borne in mind also that the somewhat mysterious Jutes, Angles, and Saxons, whose continental home was in the peninsula of Jutland and about its base, must have borne a very close relationship to their contemporaries and neighbors to the north. With the introduction of Scandinavian blood came Scandinavian manners and customs which made an impress upon the English population only recently recognized. Of the various parts of Europe which contributed elements to the English people during their forma- tive period, Scandinavia is the only one whose popu- lation has remained relatively pure and in the orig- inal home, unjostled and unmixed by foreign inva- sions.

  • Inventory of the Medieval Choir Stalls in Scandinavia
Inventory of the medieval choir stalls in Scandinavia Denmark Catholicism reached the Danish coast around 960 AD. The last three Viking kings embraced the new faith and Denmark gradually became a Christian monarchy. With this, the Viking period came to an end. The Swedish provinces nearest to Denmark today – Skåne, Blekinge and Halland – were at that time also part of the Danish realm.1 Between 1520 and 1540, the Reformation wiped out Catholicism in Scandinavia and many church buildings were adapted to the demands of the new faith. From then on, religion was an affair of the Crown. In Denmark that resulted in Catholic murals being whitewashed (they have been uncovered since the end of the 19th century) and Catholic interiors being removed from churches. Much of that has now disappeared. In the larger churches, choir stalls continued to be used, but as school desks for boys from the Latin school. Overall, people did not show much respect for their Catholic heritage.2 The archbishopric of the Danish monarchy was established in the (now Swedish) town of Lund where the cathedral houses the largest choir stalls in Scandinavia and the stalls in the Danish towns of Roskilde (cathedral) and Ringsted (Sankt Bendt Kirke) are based on these.3 Boeslunde, Kirke Oak South side 1400-1499, 7 seats North side 1510-1525, 4 seats Misericords in the shape of consoles No arm rests on north side4 Faaborg, Helligåndskirken Oak Circa 1500 The choir stalls formerly consisted of 26 seats. There are now 25 seats left because in the 19th century 1 seat on the south side had to give way to make room for an entrance to the staircase.

  • Welcome to Axis! the World Leader in Network Video, Headquartered in Lund, Sweden
Welcome to Axis! The world leader in network video, headquartered in Lund, Sweden. About Axis Axis Communications was formally founded 1984 by Mikael Karlsson, Martin Gren and Keith Bloodworth. The year before, Martin Gren and Mikael Karlsson founded the company Gren & Karlsson Firmware. With Mikael’s knowledge and understanding of International Business, Martin’s technical expertise and Keith’s skills in sales models they formed a complementary and dynamic combination. By the end of the 1980s Axis had established a position as one of the three world leaders in protocol converters/printer interfaces. With the emergence of new technologies and the growing importance of network accessibility, Axis broadened its connectivity scope to include solutions for network printing and document management in wired and wireless environments. In response to the convergence towards IP-based systems, Axis also focused increasingly on applications for video surveillance, remote monitoring, and web broadcasting, and introduced the world’s first network camera in 1996. While Axis has come a long way since then, one thing hasn’t changed – Axis’ dedication to serving the market with a consistent succession of winning network video solutions that expand the users’ potential. Today, Axis is the world leader in network video, focusing on a new wave of innovation, making advances in light sensitivity, dynamics, color reproduction and resolution in its network cameras. Beyond that, Axis is also successfully moving into new markets that Axis is calling the Internet of Things, such as access control, network horn speakers and IP Video Doorstations. Driven by the vision to come up with new, innovative, smart solutions that meet user needs, Axis will expand its portfolio to keep achieving that.
