Cricket Fifteen Wesley Teams Contested the A.P.S
Manning of Boats Rowing at Wesley College received an impetus in 1984 through the generosity of two loyal benefactors. On Wednesday, 4th April, two new boats were named at a special ceremony, one built solely and the other partly by our Boatman, Mr. Frank Steven. The gathered audience was addressed by the Principal, who spoke of the devotion and close ties to Wesley shown by Mr. Gordon Newton and Mr. Jack Joel, who donated the boats and after whom they were named. Mrs. June Newton carried out the ceremony for "The Newton" and Mrs. Karen Joel, the "Jack M. Joel". The First and Second Crews then launched the new boats and the spectators were able to see the crews row past. At the Naming of the New Boats. Cricket Fifteen Wesley teams contested the A.P.S. Readers know that during these War years the Editor, sharing our common pride in the endurance and sacrifice of our Old Boys, made a special point of reproducing selections of letters from the battle fronts. In this way present and past boys have been able to follow the part Kearsney has played in the conduct of the War. We have watched our boys in Abyssinia, Madagascar, Egypt, Tunisia, Italy, and on the high seas. We rejoice at their success, we grieve at their sufferings, we reverently mourn for those who have died. Now, with joyous anticipation we await their return, and we assure every one of them that there is a warm welcome waiting for them at Kearsney. It is a wonder to behold how a busy and hectic campus can become a quiet oasis within a matter of a few hours. This term, as our boys and girls have embarked on journeys to the far flung corners of the globe, we have quickly changed role to become hosts of the National Eton Fives Championships. Teams from across the country, together with international competitors from Switzerland and Malaysia, have been battling it out for national titles. Amongst them is a strong group of Salopians, who we anticipate will make it through to the final stages of the competition. Although the competition is very much ‘live’ as I write, I can congratulate Lizzie Ware and Sophia Breese on winning the U15 girls’ national title. We hope for more good news from the boys. In my end of term assembly, I spoke to the School about the philosophy of Kurt Hahn, one of the leading 20th century educationalists. Earlier in the term, I had the opportunity to spend a few days inspecting Gordonstoun School in Moray. As some of you will know, Gordonstoun was set up in 1934, by Kurt Hahn, on the model of Schule Schloss Salem, which had been founded several decades before, in Germany. As national socialism came to prominence with the rise of the Nazi Party, Kurt Hahn found that the ideals of his beloved school were not shared by the political agenda setters.
