The Fourth Vow in Its Ignatian Context
in the Spirituality of Jesuits The Fourth Vow in Its Ignatian Context A Historical Study ^ ^ by John W. O'Malley, S.J. Published by the American Assistancy Seminar on Jesuit Spirituality, especially for American Jesuits working out their aggiornamento in the spirit of Vatican II To/ Council THE AMERICAN ASSISTANCY SEMINAR ON JESUIT SPIRITUALITY consists of a group of Jesuits from various provinces who are listed below. The members were appointed by the Fathers Provincial of the United States. The Purpose of the Seminar is to study topics pertaining to the spir- itual doctrine and practice of Jesuits, especially American Jesuits, and to communicate the results to the members of the Assistancy. The hope is that this will lead to further discussion among all American Jesuits--in private, or in small groups, or in community meetings. All this is done in the spirit of Vatican Council II f s recommendation to religious institutes to recapture the original charismatic inspiration of their founders and to adapt it to the changed circumstances of modern times. The members of the Seminar wel- come reactions or comments in regard to the topics they publish. To achieve these purposes, especially amid today's pluralistic cul- tures, the Seminar must focus its direct attention sharply, frankly, and specifically on the problems, interests, and opportunities of the Jesuits of the United States. However, many of these interests are common also to Jes- uits of other regions, or to other priests, religious men or women, or lay men or women. Hence the studies of the Seminar, while meant especially for American Jesuits, are not exclusively for them. -
Karl Rahner and the Society of Jesus
특집: THEOLOGIA, Hic et Nunc Karl Rahner and the Society of Jesus Andreas R. Batlogg S.J. Germany, Stimmen der Zeit 편집장 1. A Theologian of the Century 2. The Jesuit: ‘One was at disposal’ 3. Conflicts 4. Was Rahner happy in the Society? Karl Rahner was a Jesuit. This is a well-known fact. Therefore, I do not say anything new to you in Korea where Rahner is read as well. Quite a number of Jesuits of Sogang University had had studies in Innsbruck or Munich and so continued to pass on the theology of Karl Rahner. Just a few months ago, a Korean translation of his lecture Das Konzil – ein neuer Beginn (1965) was published. Albert Raffelt and I wrote a comment that we may now admire in a language completely alien to us. Once more: It is a well-known fact that Karl Rahner was a member of the Society of Jesus. Yet, what does it mean? Is it only a piece of biographical Karl Rahner and the Society of Jesus 141 information? Just a religious post-nominal? Does being a Jesuit influence his way of doing theology? His choice of topics? His approach, the modus procedendi? Those are the questions I would like to think about in my lecture. And I’d like to take a look behind the scenes, from the stage of the known, obvious and public to the more basic backgrounds and settings of Rahner’s thinking and consequently of his oeuvre. 1. A Theologian of the Century Thirty years after his death, Karl Rahner–both within the Society and beyond–is still (and again) read, studied, consulted, quoted and ‘mined’ in every respect; a wide variety of texts–not only the ‘classics’–is still being re-printed; books by him are money-spinners in second-hand bookshops. -

Campbell Abstract: Scholars have debated Pope Pius XII’s role in the Holocaust since the 1960s. Did he do everything he could and should have done to save Jews? His critics say no because of antisemitism rooted in the traditional Catholic views. His defenders say yes and deny that he was an antisemite. In my thesis, I shall assess the arguments on both sides in terms of the available evidence. I shall focus both on what Pius XII did do and what he did not do and on the degree to which he can be held responsible for the actions of low-level clergy. -
Mystici Corporis Christi
MYSTICI CORPORIS CHRISTI ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS XII ON THE MISTICAL BODY OF CHRIST TO OUR VENERABLE BRETHREN, PATRIARCHS, PRIMATES, ARCHBISHOPS, BISHIOPS, AND OTHER LOCAL ORDINARIES ENJOYING PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE June 29, 1943 Venerable Brethren, Health and Apostolic Benediction. The doctrine of the Mystical Body of Christ, which is the Church,[1] was first taught us by the Redeemer Himself. Illustrating as it does the great and inestimable privilege of our intimate union with so exalted a Head, this doctrine by its sublime dignity invites all those who are drawn by the Holy Spirit to study it, and gives them, in the truths of which it proposes to the mind, a strong incentive to the performance of such good works as are conformable to its teaching. For this reason, We deem it fitting to speak to you on this subject through this Encyclical Letter, developing and explaining above all, those points which concern the Church Militant. To this We are urged not only by the surpassing grandeur of the subject but also by the circumstances of the present time. 2. For We intend to speak of the riches stored up in this Church which Christ purchased with His own Blood, [2] and whose members glory in a thorn-crowned Head. The fact that they thus glory is a striking proof that the greatest joy and exaltation are born only of suffering, and hence that we should rejoice if we partake of the sufferings of Christ, that when His glory shall be revealed we may also be glad with exceeding joy. -
The Mediation of the Church in Some Pontifical Documents Francis X
THE MEDIATION OF THE CHURCH IN SOME PONTIFICAL DOCUMENTS FRANCIS X. LAWLOR, SJ. Weston College N His recent encyclical letter, Hurnani generis, of Aug. 12, 1950, the I Holy Father reproves those who "reduce to a meaningless formula the necessity of belonging to the true Church in order to achieve eternal salvation."1 In the light of the Pope's insistence in the same encyclical letter on the ordinary, day-by-day teaching office of the Roman Pontiffs, it will be useful to select from the infra-infallible but authentic teaching of the Popes some of the abundant material touching the question of the mediatorial function of the Church in the order of salvation. The Popes, to be sure, do not speak and write after the manner of theo logians but as pastors of souls, and it is doubtless not always easy to transpose to a theological level what is contained in a pastoral docu ment and expressed in a pastoral method of approach. Yet the authentic teaching of the Popes is both a guide to, and a source of, theological thinking. The documents cited are of varying solemnity and doctrinal importance; an encyclical letter is clearly of greater magisterial value than, let us say, an occasional epistle to some prelate. It is not possible here to situate each citation in its documentary context; but the force and point of a quotation, removed from its documentary perspective, is perhaps as often lessened as augmented. Those who wish may read them in their context, if they desire a more careful appraisal of evidence. -
Part III Workshops & Competitions Entries
Part III Workshops & Competitions Entries recall – european conflict archaeological landscape reappropriation — 119 About REcall seeks to formulate a new role of the architectural environment based on invigorated research on the cultural landscapes of WWI and WWII, and to strengthen the attention on the management, documenta- tion and fruition of such a heritage. The project regards heritage as a dynamic process, involving the declara- tion of our memory of past events and actions that have been refashioned for present day purposes such as identity, community, legalisation of pow- er and authority. According to the project group, any cultural landscape or urbanscape is characterised by its dynamism, temporality and chang- ing priorities in social perception. We stress that the research we develop will generate the values to be pro- tected tomorrow. On the strength of this account, our project proposes the development of sustainable and innovative architectural practices for reuse, valorisation and communication of the XXth Century European Conflict Heritage. æ Project Description The project provides improved knowledge and advancement in the state of the art of Cultural Heritage diversity in Europe. By establishing syn- ergies between leading national and local institutions, the project brings together diverse theoretical, methodological, phenomenological and op- erative contributions on the interpretation of Conflict Heritage. Such synergies provide a framework to develop innovative research strategies based on the power of doing. Indeed, the main objective of our project is the reuse and reappropriation of difficult heritage through the reconcilia- tion of people and their memories. This operation will support European policies in Cultural Landscape Interpretation in relation to the citizen- ship formation processes of post-national societies. -

Pio Xii Il Papa Degli Ebrei

FOREWORD THE war-guilt belongs to all Europe; re- searches in every country have proved this. Germany's exclusive guilt or Germany's innocence are fairy-tales for children on both sides of the Rhine. What country wanted the war? Let us put a different question: What circles in every country wanted, facilitated, or began the war? If, instead of a horizontal section through Europe, we take a vertical section through society, we find that the sum of guilt was in the Cabinets, the sum of innocence in the streets of Europe. -
