  • Intertwined 2020: Hidden ~ Story Transcripts
Intertwined 2020: Hidden ~ Story Transcripts Sarah Blanchard I have a dear friend named Tim. He is wicked smart, extremely strong, super quirky and cuddly, and, he is terrified of tasers. He freaks out whenever he hears one. We don’t know why. He’s never told us what causes this reaction. In college, some friends would use this bit of information against him, because they found it hilarious. One day we were sitting in our living room, Tim was hanging in the hammock, and one my friends went up behind him and turn on the taser right by his ear. It was one of the tasers you have to physically touch the person with, so it didn’t actually hurt him, but it still made that super loud crackling sound that tasers make. Tim jolted so badly that he fell out of the hammock. He screamed out, started yelling at us and then stormed upstairs to his room because he was so upset. While some people may find pranks like this funny, I find them rather heartbreaking. I can empathize with Tim because I myself, have something about me that people don’t understand. Something that make me different. I suffer from a disorder caused Misophonia, which basically means I am hyper-sensitive to certain sounds. In fact, misophonia literally means “the hatred of sounds”. When you have Misophonia the flight or fight mechanism in your brain, the stress response, gets triggered in inappropriate and non-life threatening situations. In other words, when I hear a certain sound, my brain and body react as if I am legitimate in danger.

Irizarry 2019 iii Abstract Casting Judas: Interracial Intimacy in Jesus Christ Superstar Larissa A. Irizarry, MA University of Pittsburgh, 2019 Jesus Christ Superstar (JCS) by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first debuted as a staged musical in 1971, and was turned into a film production in 1973. In 2000 Gale Edwards and Nick Morris directed a second film adaptation. On Easter Sunday 2018, JCS, directed by David Levaux and Alex Rudzinki, was broadcasted on NBC as a live musical television special. Each of these three productions incorporates different configurations of interracial intimacy among the characters of Judas, Jesus, and Mary. These different characterizations and configurations of race construction produce differing commentaries on race and interracial relations. Despite the emergent scholarship of critical race theory in theater and film studies, there is surprisingly little literature on the configurations of interracial intimacies in JCS. In this thesis, I draw on critical race theory and gender studies to explore how race inflects representations of intimacy in JCS, focusing on the characterization of Judas across these productions.

  • Motion City Soundtrack Stir up Old Memories at the Fillmore
Motion City SoundtrackCO sNtTiIrN UuEp TO o SlIdTE memories at the Fillmore Monday, February 17, 2020 by Emily Cassel in Music Justin Pierre of Motion City Soundtrack at the Fillmore last night. Natalia Mendez For the first few months I lived here, I walked around Minneapolis with Motion City Soundtrack’s “Better Open the Door” playing near-constantly in my head. OK, really, it was just one line: “Frank fails to see the humor in my sad attempts at breakdancing in every bar along Lyndale Avenue.” Every trip to Muddy Waters or the VFW, passing street signs for Lyndale, it popped unwillingly into my mind, a sort of lyrical landmark orienting me to my new reality. Lyndale Avenue is a real place. The CC Club is a real place. The Triple Rock is a real place. (Or was, RIP.) Look, MCS were no Hold Steady—it’s not like they served as a geocache map of Minnesota—but it meant something to me to be in a place that meant at least a small something to them. I memorized those words long before this state held any significance for me: When I was an angsty teen in a small town outside of Philly, they’d always been a Stagnant Suburban Soundtrack, with songs about alienation and depression and loneliness backed by zoomy synths that made it not so bad to feel all those things. Is this all a little self-indulgently nostalgic? Sure, fine. But hey pal, that’s what these latest MCS dates are . That’s what a reunion tour is .

Editor’s Note Dear Artists and Writers, What is beauty? It seems like a pretty easy question to answer, but think about it for a minute. What is it that makes those Arizona sunsets so beautiful? Or the aqua colored water of the Caribbean so damn memorable? Is it in the colors? As I’ve sifted through your photographs and read your words during my tenure as Editor, it was this seemingly simple, three word question that kept ringing in my ears. I didn’t know what it was, but I could recognize it when I saw it and I knew that I desperately craved it. Because we are subjected to the little ugly parts of life every single day, we need beauty in the world to give us something to truly appreciate, something to hope for, something to just fucking survive. It can be anything from a baby’s giggle to a stranger’s smile, a hug from Grandma to fresh snow in the morning - these are all tangible things though. What’s so beauti- ful about poetry, about literature, about art as a whole, is its unique ability to create something within the human soul that stirs your heart, makes you laugh out loud, drowns you in your own tears, gives you the motivation to want to change the world, and eventually forces you into a raw and passionate embrace of truth. It is this essence of honesty that I kept glimpsing as I combed through the submis- sions and as the journal has slowly materialized, time and time again, I have been con- fronted by the sheer beauty of what you’ve created.
