Michelangelo Pistoletto, an Italian painter and sculptor born in 1933, is a European artist associated with ‘Arte Povera’, an ‘attitude’ which was first born in 1967 in Turin. One of his highest profile works is ‘Love Difference, Mar Mediterraneo’, 2003/2005, a mirror table in the form of the Mediterranean sea, surrounded by about 20 different chairs representing the different countries that surround it, depicting their different postures and lifestyles, a strong symbol of exchange and dialogue. This boat trip will give us the opportunity to give a flavour of the future ‘Cité de la Méditerranée’ project between Vieux-Port and Arenc, which will transform the city and its sea front into a unique space that demonstrates Marseille’s role as a major hub of cultural and economic exchange, an interface between Europe and the Mediterranean. Spread over an area of less than 6 km2, five cultural centres will open by 2013: the MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations), the Regional Centre for the Mediterranean, the Silo entertainment venue, the ‘J1’ central venue for future Capital of Culture events and the FRAC Regional Collection of Contemporary Art.
