He was born in Minden in Germany and studied at the Kunstakademie in Nuremberg. After spells in New York, London and New Delhi, he has lived and worked in Berlin since 1985, winning the Karl-Hofer prize in 1997. ‘Lieux publics’, the National Centre of Creation, invited Johan Lorbeer to perform at the Vieux Port in Marseille in June 2007. He stayed on and worked with ‘Lieux publics’ throughout the season. www.johanlorbeer.com Association Marseille-Provence 2013 2 Friche La Belle de Mai, 10/12 rue François Simon, 13003 Marseille – +33 (0)4 91 13 20 13 [email protected] / www.marseille-provence2013.fr 12:30 pm Les Baumettes Prison Presentation of a workshop from the European ‘Frontières’ programme ‘Frontières: dedans-dehors’ is a 5-year European programme (2009-2013) involving 5 penitentiary centres in Marseille, Oslo, Barcelona, Wuppertal and Milan, working with 5 European partners: - ‘Lieux Fictifs’ and the ‘Alzhar’ theatre company, working in prisons. Marseille, France - TRANSFormas, a cultural organisation working in the fields of theatre, photography and cinema in prisons. Barcelona, Spain - Westerdals School of Communication, a cinema training unit. Oslo, Norway - Unter Wasser Fliegen, a theatre company that organises international and cross-disciplinary cultural projects for marginalized groups. Wuppertal, Germany - E.S.T.I.A. a cultural organisation that runs theatre and cinema workshops in prisons. Milan, Italy The ‘Frontières: dedans-dehors’ programme includes: - creative and artistic workshops involving groups of prisoners (‘inside’) and groups of local people (‘outside’) from each of the 5 cities. - cinema workshops (getting people on the inside and on the outside writing, acting and filming) around the bid’s themes: ‘Migration, exile and travel’, ‘Masculine & Feminine’ and ‘Memories’. - theatre workshops on these themes. ‘Lieux Fictifs’ is a Marseille-based association which founded and now heads up this project. It was accredited as part of the ‘European Year of Intercultural Dialogue’ for its activities at Les Baumettes prison in 2008. He was a finalist in the French Chef-Patissier Championship and runs the ‘Charles Livon’ restaurant in Marseille. This autumn he will be running a new restaurant with a ‘cooking for beginners’ workshop in Marseille, and is also working on a high-quality ‘street food’ concept, based on organic products and the idea of ‘slow food’. Meeting the bid’s European artists Patrick Bouchain, architect, will talk about the ‘Digue du large’ breakwater project, one of the most emblematic sites for the future Capital’s identity. His notable achievements include the creation of ‘Le Magasin’ in Grenoble and the ‘Volière Dromesko’ in Lausanne, the conversion of the former LU factories in Nantes, the International Museum of Modest Arts in Sète, the Maguy Marin National Choreography Centre in Rilleux-la- Pape, amongst others. He is now working on the Friche 2013 project in Marseille. Patrice Chéreau. A director whose productions of Wagner’s Ring Cycle and the Koltès plays have left their mark on the history of theatre he also directed ‘La Reine Margot’ and other more intimist films. Director of the Nanterre-Amandiers theatre from 1982 to 1990, Patrice Chéreau is a significant figure in contemporary French theatre. He is now working on his next film, for which some scenes will be filmed in Marseille. Marie Ducaté. Based in Marseille since 1986, Marie Ducaté has developed a multi-faceted art form. China, ceramics, paintings, frescos and even furniture are some of the forms that channel her explorations. Marie Ducaté is committed to bringing together the decorative arts and fine arts; she exhibits regularly in France and abroad. Gloria Friedmann. This German artist, who lives in France, became famous through her work dealing with the often conflicting relationship between nature and culture. She will be one of the artists running workshops for the ‘Ateliers de l’Euroméditerranée’ project over the next few years. François Hébel. Director of ‘Les Rencontres de la Photographie’ in Arles. The first internationally- renowned photography festival, ‘Les Rencontres d’Arles’ will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2009. The event will take over about twenty locations that form part of the exceptional architectural and historical heritage of the town of Arles, to offer the public a variety of photographic exhibitions and workshops throughout the summer. Patrick Marijon, assistant director of the Aix-en-Provence Festival. The festival was founded in 1948 by Gabriel Dussurget, and is one of the most important international gatherings for contemporary lyrical art. Stéphane Lissner, who has directed the festival since 1998, has just been succeeded in this role by Bernard Foccroulle. Thierry Niang, a Marseille-based choreographer, has produced his most recent work in Châteauvallon (Var) based on the writings of Marie Desplechin, with Patrice Chéreau working as an external consultant. Thierry Niang has worked with Claude Régy and Robert Carsen, and visual artists Jean-Charles Blais and Jenny Holzen, amongst others. He won the ‘Villa Médicis Hors les murs’ prize in 1994 and the Unesco-Aschberg Foundation prize in 2004. Association Marseille-Provence 2013 4 Friche La Belle de Mai, 10/12 rue François Simon, 13003 Marseille – +33 (0)4 91 13 20 13 [email protected] / www.marseille-provence2013.fr Michelangelo Pistoletto, an Italian painter and sculptor born in 1933, is a European artist associated with ‘Arte Povera’, an ‘attitude’ which was first born in 1967 in Turin. One of his highest profile works is ‘Love Difference, Mar Mediterraneo’, 2003/2005, a mirror table in the form of the Mediterranean sea, surrounded by about 20 different chairs representing the different countries that surround it, depicting their different postures and lifestyles, a strong symbol of exchange and dialogue. This table is exhibited at the MuCEM for the meeting with the Board. Rudy Ricciotti is an architect based in Bandol, winner of the ‘Grand Prix national d’Architecture’ prize in 2006, whose most notable achievements are the ‘Stadium’ in Vitrolles,, the Villa Lyprendi in Toulon and ‘Le Pavillon Noir’, the National Choreography Centre in Aix-en-Provence. From 2009-2011 he will be working on the reconstruction of the Jean-Bouin stadium in Paris, the ITER project headquarters, and the MuCEM museum in Marseille.’ This boat trip will give us the opportunity to give a flavour of the future ‘Cité de la Méditerranée’ project between Vieux-Port and Arenc, which will transform the city and its sea front into a unique space that demonstrates Marseille’s role as a major hub of cultural and economic exchange, an interface between Europe and the Mediterranean. Spread over an area of less than 6 km2, five cultural centres will open by 2013: the MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations), the Regional Centre for the Mediterranean, the Silo entertainment venue, the ‘J1’ central venue for future Capital of Culture events and the FRAC Regional Collection of Contemporary Art.
