Months in advance of the necessary preparations required to properly honour Constable Samuel Nelson and his valiant attempt to arrest Ben Hall and his gang. Outside and on the grounds the successful bidder will recreate the event no doubt and firmly re-establish the events together with the community of Collector NSW. The monument to Constable Samuel Nelson will also no doubt also be wet with the tears and cheers of all gathering. It is said that Ben Hall regretted the passing of Constable Nelson that he had shouted words of warning and remorse later having also washed his conscience inside the Bushranger Hotel… It is a tribute to him also to be found standing here… for any man to consider his actions regrets and the loss of life and love that began elsewhere.

    Scenic and Historic Drives Route 2 Explorers and Bushrangers

    SCENIC AND HISTORIC DRIVES ROUTE 2 EXPLORERS AND BUSHRANGERS DRIVE DESCRIPTION Hamilton Hume famously began his trek south from his property near Gunning in 1824, however he also explored extensive parts of the Goulburn Plains. Likewise, bushrangers including Ben Hall terrorized travelers along these key transport routes. Explore from Gunning to Collector and get a sense of this history. POINTS OF INTREST Gunning Your journey back to the time of the explorers and bushrangers starts in the historic village of Gunning. Explorer Hamilton Hume established a sheep property here in 1821, and soon after the area became an official settlement. In 1824 Hume and Captain William Hovell set off on their famous expedition south to what is now Melbourne. In 1840, bushrangers Thomas Whitton and his ruthless gang held up the town. Hamilton Hume’s brother, John Kennedy Hume and a group of local men faced up to the bushrangers, but John Hume was killed. You can find his grave, and those of others from this time, in the Gunning General Cemetery at the end of Wombat Street. Gunning features a whole range of interesting historical buildings and sites dating from this time onwards, featured in the self-guided Heritage Walk of Gunning. Fish River After exploring Gunning’s rich history, and maybe enjoying refreshments in one of the delightful cafés, it is time to head east out of town on the Cullerin Road. Around 5 km out of Gunning you will find a commemorative memorial erected in 1924, marking the start of Hume and Hovell’s expedition in 1824.

Concrete Slab and Arch Bridges 101 Masonry Bridges Heritage Study of Masonry Bridges in NSW 2005 1 Historical Overview of Bridge Types in NSW: Extract from the Study of Masonry Bridges in NSW HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TO MASONRY BRIDGES IN NSW 1.1 History of early bridges constructed in NSW Bridges constructed prior to the 1830s were relatively simple forms. The majority of these were timber structures, with the occasional use of stone piers. The first bridge constructed in NSW was built in 1788. The bridge was a simple timber bridge constructed over the Tank Stream, near what is today the intersection of George and Bridge Streets in the Central Business District of Sydney. Soon after it was washed away and needed to be replaced. The first "permanent" bridge in NSW was this bridge's successor. This was a masonry and timber arch bridge with a span of 24 feet erected in 1803 (Figure 1.1). However this was not a triumph of colonial bridge engineering, as it collapsed after only three years' service. It took a further five years for the bridge to be rebuilt in an improved form. The contractor who undertook this work received payment of 660 gallons of spirits, this being an alternative currency in the Colony at the time (Main Roads, 1950: 37) Figure 1.1 “View of Sydney from The Rocks, 1803”, by John Lancashire (Dixson Galleries, SLNSW).

    Ray Nelson's Great Great Grandfather Was the Policeman at Collector

    Ray Nelson’s Great Great Grandfather was the policeman shot dead by bushranger John Dunn in Collector 1865 Death of Constable Nelson, Samuel (1827–1865) On January 26, 1865 Hall's gang held up about thirty persons on the road near Goulburn. A group of police at Collector accompanied by Mr. Voss and a magistrate, went in search of the bushrangers. A couple of hours later, Hall, Gilbert and Dunn, went into Collector and stuck up Kimberley's Inn. On this reaching the ears of the lock-up keeper, Samuel Nelson, who was the only policeman there, he took his carbine and went up towards Kimberley's. Dunn who had stayed outside, met him on the road, called upon him to stand, firing at the same instant. Then Dunn fired again. Both shots hit Nelson, one on the head, the other in the heart. Dunn robbed Nelson's body of money and other valuables and took his gun. After he committed this murder, Dunn went to Kimberley's Inn, and the bushrangers left the township. Subsequently the police sighted them on the brow of a hill and charged them, the bushrangers fled Nelson had been in the police force for some years, and was much respected. He left a wife and eight children. Two of his sons saw him shot; one was holding the bushrangers' horses at the time. One son was Frederick Nelson, who was also fired upon by Dunn. Dunn was finally captured on Christmas Day, 1865 and hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol on 19 March 1866. A memorial to Samuel Nelson is at the Collector cemetery, Bourke Street, Church of England Section.

The equivalent of two man years of work has been spent on the development of the package and a database authoring system which will be used to prepare further databases. During the design stage of the package's development, a number of objectives were set which required us to develop new ideas, new approaches and ultimately a database significantly different to and more powerful than any other education database currently available. Some of the significant features include * extensive content as a result of in-depth research * an information retrieval component with annotated text files, maps, word search capability and a reference dictionary * a database management system which assists the user in selecting fields, field items, operators, etc. * a calculator and a histogram graphing utility to support the database management system * provision for the printing of any file, record, analysis result or histogram * menus and screen instructions to guide the user as much as possible and to minimise the chances of getting lost * a high speed disk operating system, binary files and compacted menus to minimise the time the user waits for programs, files, menus, etc., to be retrieved from disk * indexed binary databases.
