    Religion and Presidential Elections: From Accusations of Atheism to Proclamations of the Born-Again Katie Browne How does religion function in the political realm? Does it divide or unite, trivialize or universalize? Every aspect of the role of religion in politics is up for considerable debate. But when it comes to American presidential elections, this debate falls into two surprisingly distinct categories. The first asserts that religion and politics have always been intertwined in this arena. The opposing view asserts that religion has only recently emerged as an important factor within the previous decade, a time frame which most commonly parallels the election of born-again evangelical George W. Bush. While neither of these approaches is correct, neither is entirely incorrect. In this paper, I will argue for a more nuanced understanding of religion and presidential elections. Although religion has indeed always been intertwined in presidential elections to a certain extent, at a crucial juncture in political history the relationship was dramatically altered. This occasion was the election of America’s first born-again evangelical, Jimmy Carter, in 1976 and his subsequent defeat by Ronald Reagan in 1980. The lull between the two campaign years represents an all- important transitional period in which religion morphed from an occasionally powerful factor to a necessary tool in presidential elections. Carter’s success in 1976 was the first time a candidate’s personal conversion narrative propelled him to the White House. Reagan’s success represented another milestone, the formulation of a conscious religious strategy that would be necessarily refined and utilized by all successful candidates to follow.

Even Webster’s Dictionary gives a better definition of sin than do most “born again” Christians: Sin is transgression of the law of God; disobedience of the divine will, moral failure. Sin is failure to realize in conduct and character the moral ideal, at least as 50 fully as possible under existing circumstances; failure to do as one ought toward one’s fellowman. Sin has lost its prominence and most certainly its popular- ity as a sermon theme for clergymen searching for a word to pass onto their congregations.

Farley In the last decade, scholars have increasingly begun to study the role of issue entrepreneurs and subculture elites in utilizing ideologies, frames and cultural symbolism in the mobilization of social and political movements. Despite this, one of the most important social/political movements of the last century, the rise of the Evangelical Right, has largely escaped examination through these lenses. A limited number have focused their attention upon the more prominent evangelical leaders, like Rev. Jerry Falwell, but this work examines the evangelical subculture from a broader perspective. A similar criticism is that the scholarship in this field often oversimplifies this political reawakening. Researchers often suggest that the 1976 presidential campaign of fellow evangelical Jimmy Carter was the central mobilizing force which propelled white evangelicals into the electoral arena, causing secular conservative political operatives to realize the dormant electoral potential of this community. This study shows that operatives and elites within the evangelical subculture were moving to politicalize the subculture long before the 1980 election, the establishment of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority or even the 1976 election. Finally, this study provides an analysis of the ideology evangelicals were mobilized under during the 1960s and 1970s.
