You will find sheep and cows grazing on pastures above the valley, supplying milk for genuine Bovec, Tolmin, Bohinj and Velika Planina cheeses. Slovenia is home to three different indigenous cheeses: Nanoški sir (sir means cheese), Tolminc sir and Bovški sir. The first two are made of 100 percent cow’s milk, the third one is 100 percent sheep milk. Each year, many different fla- vors and shapes of cheese are available from mountain shepherds in the meadows.

I 78 Opulence Spring 2018 Spring 2018 Opulence 79 BY JANA SOELDNER DANGER First, you descended a creaking mine shaft to a disorienting maze in a futile search for gold. Later, thuggish gang members threat- ened to kill you. Then a rat catcher forced you to accompany him through the back alleys of Chinatown, where the bodies of plague victims lay rotting. Most frightening of all, brutish guards locked you in Alcatraz with the ghosts of dangerous murderers.

But no, it’s not a nightmare. And the scares are all in fun. These are just some of the scenes portrayed in the , an interactive attraction that brings to life the Old Bay area’s murky past through a cast of talented actors, startling special effects, and gripping stories. The 60-minute, live-action journey takes you through 200 years of San Francisco’s most riveting and grisly history, and you’re not just part of the audience: You are also part of the show. In the San Francisco experience, guests find themselves lost in the maze of an abandoned gold mine; encounter the brutal Hounds gang of Kearny Street; and experi- ence a thrilling drop ride as they try to escape from Alcatraz

Created by British-based , a company whose portfolio includes, among others, , the Eye Brand, Aquariums, Madame Tussaud’s celebrity wax mu- seum, the Merlin Dungeon on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is the first of its kind in North America. “We explore the darker, sinister underbelly of the city,” says Matt Clarkson, regional head of marketing for Merlin. DUNGEON SITES The Merlin Dungeons have entertained and educated Europe- ans for decades. Sites include Amsterdam, Berlin, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Hamburg, London, and York, and plans call for a new one to open in soon. Each offers a unique combination of authentic history, horror and humor to illustrate the location’s most gruesome historic events. This must be a nightmare.

The Dungeon attractions were originally inspired by an exhibit of wax figures called Madame Tussaud’s Chamber of Horrors. The first Dungeon opened in 1974 in Suf- folk beneath a railway station in a damp, underground chamber that may have once been an actual dungeon. “It started as a museum that looked at the darker side of medieval history,” Clarkson said.
