    Urbanities, Vol. 3 · No 2 · November 2013 © 2013 Urbanities The Exhibition of Communist Objects and Symbols in Berlin’s Urban Landscape as Alternative Narratives of the Communist Past Marie Hocquet (Centre Max Weber, Université Jean Monnet - Saint-Étienne) [email protected] The objective of this article is to investigate the different approaches at play in the material and symbolic production of the urban space through the study of the transformations of the East-Berlin urban landscape since the German reunification. I will show how the official accounts of the ex-GDR have crystallised in the Berlin urban space through the construction of a negative heritage. I will then focus on how the increase in historic tourism in the capital has contributed to the emergence of legible micro-accounts related to the local communist past in the urban space that compete with the official interpretations of this past. Key words: Berlin, symbolism, communism, heritage Introduction Urban space can be considered as a privileged place where one can observe the work of self- definition undertaken by societies. This is because human beings take their place in a physical environment by materialising their being-in-the-world. The urban landscape is defined by Mariusz Czepczyński as a ‘visible and communicative media through which thoughts, ideas and feelings, as well as powers and social constructions are represented in a space’ (Czepczyński 2010: 67). In the process outlined above, the narrativisation of the past and its inscription in the urban space is a phenomenon of primary importance. Our cities’ landscapes are linked to memory in a dynamic process which constantly urges societies to visualise themselves, to imagine the future and to represent themselves in it.

Our offices are located on the second and third floor – we recommend visiting the second floor office first, as the majority of our team is based there. The closest U-Bahn Stations are Kochstraße and Hallesches Tor. From there it’s a 5 minute walK to the office. Below is a route description from the various points you might be entering Berlin. Maps for walKing routes are provided from page 2. From airport Tegel Take the bus TXL towards Alexanderplatz until the station Hauptbahnhof. See the steps below on how to continue from there. From the central station (Hauptbahnhof) You have two options: 1) Take the bus M41 towards Sonnenallee/Baumschulenstraße or Hermannplatz. Get off at the station Willy-Brandt-Haus (this leg of the journey taKes approximately 12 minutes) and from there it’s a 400 meter walK to our office In total this should taKe about 20 minutes. 2) Take the S7 (direction Ahrensfelde), S75 (direction Wartenberg) or S5 (direction Strausberg Nord) to Friedrichstraße. Please take the bus line 128 Osloer Straße, which is just located in front of the airport (terminal X). Get off the train after 6 stops (10 minutes) at the Kurt- Schumacher-Platz and enter the subway station to use the underground train line U6 Alt-Mariendorf. Stay on this line for about 30 minutes and get off after 21 stops at at Ullsteinstraße. Take the Tempelhof closest exit in direction of traffic and follow the signs to Ullsteinstraße. When you exit the station, you will see the Ullsteinstraße Ullsteinhaus building on your left. You may pass the building and turn left. Walk along the driveway, until you reach the gatehouse to your left and walk through. It´s a five minute walk. Keep right and go up the large open steel staircase to enter the main entrance. For a barrier-free access to the Bosch IoT Campus, use the elevator from the ground level inside the building on your left. Coming from Berlin Schönefeld Airport (approx. 45 minutes) Schönefeld We are recommending to take the subway line S45 to Südkreuz. Stay Airport on this line for about 20 minutes and get off after 10 stops at Schönefeld Tempelhof. From there, switch to the U6 underground train towards Alt-Mariendorf and get off after 3 stops at Ullsteinstraße. Take the closest exit in direction of traffic and then follow the signs to Ullsteinstraße.
