SOTEROULA CONSTANTINIDOU HELEN AND PANDORA: A COMPARATIVE STUDY WITH EMPHASIS ON THE EIDOLON THEME AS A CONCEPT OF ERIS "In a small-scale society myth tends to be viewed as the encoding of that society’s concept of truth; at the same time, from the viewpoint of We stern civilization, myth has become the opposite of fact, the antithesis of truth” (Gregory Nagy, Foreword to R.P. Martin, The Language of Heroes. Speech and Performance in the Iliad, Ithaca and London 1989, ix) *. This work is a comparative study of the myths of Helen and Pan dora* 1 with emphasis on the eidolon theme as a concept of eris and on the interaction between mytkos and logos. My aim is to read this theme in a different perspective, i.e. as a device of strife; as such, the eidolon- eris concept is personified in Helen’s heroic figure and gives heioic saga a stimulating version about the Cause of the Trojan War! More over, the idea of the association of Helen and Pandora is put forward here, as both figures acquired the mythical details of an image, of a phantom, although each one with essential discrepancies: for example, Pandora’s existence was confined to that of a phantom, a false creation rather than a human being, from the very beginning, whereas Helen’s ccanti-myth” makes her trespass from the world of the real to that of the eidola, of the imitation of the real. When were the TNFJ and the ISO banned, and what are the names of their successors? Country Advice PAK33887 (November 2008) provides information on the history and names of the Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Fiqh-e-Jafaria (TNFJ). Ambiguities in the naming practices of the TNFJ, and the breakaway group Tehrik-e-Jafaria Pakistan (TJP) are discussed in both Country Advice PAK 14999 (February 2002) and Country Advice PAK33887 (November 2008). Country Advice PAK31967 (June 2007) provides detailed information regarding the Imamia Student Organisation (ISO). Pertinent information from these responses is summarised below. It is important to note, as does Country Advice PAK33887 (November 2008), that the various Shi‟a sectarian groups currently operating in Pakistan have a complex history, with factional splits in organisations, and the formation of militant factions creating a range of different actors. The names under which different Shi‟a groups have operated have varied over time, in response to factional splits and government bans. It is in this context that there is a degree of variance and inconsistency in the titles by which the Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Fiqh-e-Jafaria (TNFJ) and the Tehrik-e-Jafaria Pakistan (TJP) are referred to in news media, and political discourse; names tend to be used interchangeably.1 Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Fiqh-e-Jafaria (TNFJ) No information was located which indicated the TNFJ was a banned organisation in Pakistan. The group‟s website http://tnfj.org.pk/sec/cont.htm was active at the time this research was conducted, and lists its headquarters in Rawalpindi.2 The naming of the TNFJ and other organisations is discussed below. -

Kostuch Lucyna, Pantes theoi, Polemos and Ares on the Battlefield. The Greek Concept of the War deity. The Hellenes created a concept of potential military engagement by all the gods. In martial contexts, Greek authors often included the concepts of “all the gods” (pantes theoi), “the gods” (theoi), “god” (theos), divine being (daimonion) and holy power (hieros), which signify interference by unidentified divine forces. The relationship between war and gods may thus be defined ex definitione. The question arises as to the basis of this way of thinking. It seems that the answer should be sought in the basic definition of war – polemos. War is only occasionally personified. The answer to the question of why Polemos never became a clearly defined divine figure and mythological hero can be found in Homer. In the Iliad many deities, although not all, have military might (polemos) at their disposal and participate in directing martial activities. It is for this very reason that this force never became an independent one – war arises as a result of what can be termed a divine “chain reaction”. The existence of war is thus dependent on the gods who make it active as the result of a stimulus. It is significant that Ares, just like Polemos, is not fully autonomous. -

The form of presentation is prescribed by the plan of the series. The book is to be a compilation of extracts from the Greek authors, selected, so far as possible, without prejudice and translated with such honesty as a translation may have. This plan has the merit of isolating the actual thought of the Greeks in this period from all the constructions put upon it by later ages, except in so far as the choice of extracts must be governed by some scheme in the compiler's mind, which is itself determined by the limits of his knowledge and by other personal factors. In the book itself it is clearly his business to reduce the influence of these factors to the lowest point; but in the introduction it is no less his business to forewarn the reader against some of the consequences. -

FOUR A LIFETIME OF TROUBLE-MAI(ING: HERMES AS TRICI(STER William G. Doty In exploring here some of the many ways the ancient Greek figure of Hermes was represented we sight some of the recurring characteristics of tricksters from a number of cultures. Although the Hermes figure is so complex that a whole catalog of his characteristics could be presented,1 the sections of this account include just six: (1) his marginality and paradoxical qualities; (2) his erotic and relational aspects; (3) his func tions as a creator and restorer; (4) his deceitful thievery; (5) his comedy and wit; and (6) the role ascribed to him in hermeneutics, the art of interpretation whose name is said to be derived from his. The sixth element listed names one of the most significant ways this trickster comes to us-as interpreter, messenger-but the other characteristics we will explore provide important contexts for what is conveyed, and how. This is not just any Western Union or Federal Express worker, but a marginal figure whose connective tasks shade over into creativity itself. A hilarious cheat, he sits nonetheless at the golden tables of the deities. We now recognize that even apparently irreverent stories show that some mythical models could be conceived in a wide range of sig nificances, even satirized, without thereby abandoning the meaning complex in which the models originated. “Dearest to be Man's Companion”: Hermes, Divine Aid, and Agency David Chou UC Berkeley Classical Languages Class of 2017 Abstract: This paper compares passages from Book 24 of the Iliad, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, and the Odyssey and argues that Hermes’ portrayal in archaic Greek literature is characterized by a high degree of sympathy for those under his guidance and a hands-on approach to divine intervention. In particular, parallels are drawn between Hermes’ escorting of Priam to and from Achilles’ camp, and his guidance of both Persephone and Herakles out of the underworld. These examples are contrasted with Hermes’ role as a psychopomp and are used to argue that these texts display an understanding of divine aid that is not limited to mere function but which takes into account the personality and autonomous agency of individual deities. The Homeric Hymn to Athena describe the goddess as one who simultaneously “loves the deeds of war, the sack of cities” and “saves the people as they go to war and come back.”1 Similarly, Hermes is portrayed in archaic Greek literature both as a psychopomp and as a god who helps those seeking to escape the Underworld or comparably difficult situations. Hermes serves as Priam's charioteer during his journey to and from Achilles’ camp in Book 24 of the Iliad, just as he does for Persephone when he escorts her out of Erebos in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. His actions and words in the Iliad show that he recognizes limitations on the help that gods are able to provide mortals, but that he is both inclined to and willing to bend the rules as far as possible in order to aid those under his protection. -
