Eleven species of hydroids including two new (Halecium corpulatum and Plumularia fragilia) from a depth of 50 m, 50 km north of Dampier, Western Australia are reported. The tropical hydroid fauna of Western Australia is poorly known; species recorded here show strong affinity with the Indonesian and Indo–Pacific region. Hydroids are broadly reported in epiphytic associations from different localities showing marked seasonal cycles. Studies have shown that the factors behind these seasonal differences in hydroid richness and abundance may vary significantly according to the area of study. Seasonal differences in epiphytic hydroid cover and richness were evaluated in a Sargassum cymosum C. Agardh bed from Lázaro beach, at Ubatuba, Brazil. Significant seasonal differences were found in total hydroid cover, but not in species richness. Hydroid cover increased from March (early fall) to February (summer). Most of this pattern was caused by two of the most abundant species: Aglaophenia latecarinata Allman, 1877 and Orthopyxis sargassicola (Nutting, 1915). Hydroid richness seems to be related to S. cymosum size but not directly to its biomass. The seasonal differences in hydroid richness and algal cover are shown to be similar to other works in the study region and in the Mediterranean. Seasonal recruitment of hydroid species larvae may be responsible for their seasonal differences in algal cover, although other factors such as grazing activity of gammarid amphipods on S. -

FAUTIN his ancient phylum of mostly marine organisms is best known for its contribution to geomorphological features, forming thousands of square Tkilometres of coral reefs in warm tropical waters. Their fossil remains contribute to some limestones. Cnidarians are also significant components of the plankton, where large medusae – popularly called jellyfish – and colonial forms like Portuguese man-of-war and stringy siphonophores prey on other organisms including small fish. Some of these species are justly feared by humans for their stings, which in some cases can be fatal. Certainly, most New Zealanders will have encountered cnidarians when rambling along beaches and fossicking in rock pools where sea anemones and diminutive bushy hydroids abound. In New Zealand’s fiords and in deeper water on seamounts, black corals and branching gorgonians can form veritable trees five metres high or more. In contrast, inland inhabitants of continental landmasses who have never, or rarely, seen an ocean or visited a seashore can hardly be impressed with the Cnidaria as a phylum – freshwater cnidarians are relatively few, restricted to tiny hydras, the branching hydroid Cordylophora, and rare medusae. Worldwide, there are about 10,000 described species, with perhaps half as many again undescribed. All cnidarians have nettle cells known as nematocysts (or cnidae – from the Greek, knide, a nettle), extraordinarily complex structures that are effectively invaginated coiled tubes within a cell. -

Collins 3 Marine hydroids are important benthic components of shallow and deep waters worldwide, but their taxonomy is controversial because diagnostic morphological characters to categorize taxa are limited. Their genetic relationships are also little investigated. We tested taxonomic hypotheses within the highly speciose superfamily Plumularioidea by integrating a classical morphological approach with DNA barcoding of the 16S and COI mitochondrial markers for 659 and 196 specimens of Plumularioidea, respectively. Adding Genbank sequences, we inferred systematic relationships among 1,114 plumularioids, corresponding to 123 nominal species and 17 novel morphospecies in fve families of Plumularioidea. We found considerable inconsistencies in the systematics of nominal families, genera and species. The families Kirchenpaueriidae and Plumulariidae were polyphyletic and the Halopterididae paraphyletic. Most genera of Plumularioidea are not monophyletic. Species diversity is considerably underestimated. Within our study, at least 10% of the morphologically-distinctive morphospecies are undescribed, and about 40% of the overall species richness is represented by -

Associations between hydroid species and their substrata from the intertidal zone of Mar del Plata (Argentine).-Colonial organisrns, including many species of Hydrozoa, typically have short life cycles and rapid growth. Moreover, they are often found attached to other organisms. The associations between ten hydroid species, Clytia gracilis (Sars, 1851), Obelia longissima (Pallas, 1766), Halecium beanii (Johnston, 1838), Halecium delicatulum Coughtrey, 1876, Sertularella mediterranea Hartlaub, 1901, Plumularia setacea (Linnaeus, 1758), Tubularia crocea (Agassiz, 1862). Sarsia sarsii (Loven, 1836), Bimeria vestita Wright, 1859 and Rhizogeton nudum Broch, 1909, and their substrata, from the rocky intertidal zone at Mar del Plata, Argentine, were studied between March 1990 and February 1992. Sarsia sarsii and T. crocea (Anthothecata) and P. setacea (Leptothecata) were the most frequent epibiotic species. Two principal groups of hydroids were found, those that grew on other hydropolyps and those that grew predorninantly on Mollusca (bivalves). The rnost irnportant substrates were Mollusca (48.7%) and Hydrozoa (24.4%); less frequent substrates included Tunicata, rocks, algae, and sponges. Introduction A new genus of the family Plumulariidae was discovered amongst Atlantic hydroids collected by the French BALGIM and SEAMOUNT1 expeditions. Genus Pseudoplumaria gen. nov. Diagnosis.— Colonies composed of a rigid, polysiphonic, occasionally forked axis (hydrocaulus), bearing side-branches that may rebranch again (till 3rd order). Side-branches alternate or opposite, polysiphonic almost till their end, originating from secondary tubules. Hydrocladia not branched, alternately arranged along axis, springing from the primary tube and pointing alternately left and right, placed on an apophysis with a much developed, large 'mamelon' on its superior surface. Hydrothecae exclusively found on the hydrocladia, hydrothecal border smooth. Mobile, immobile and reduced nematothecae two-chambered (bithalamic). -

Agassiz, 1862 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) from the Bay of Biscuy.- Nineteen hydrozoan species belonging to four families Aglaopheniidae (9 spp.), Halopteridae (3 spp.), Kirchenpaueriidae (1 sp.) and Plumulariidae (6 spp.) were collected from 61 stations along the Cantabrian coast and the continental shelf and slope (depth range littoral-1347 m). A systematic account of the superfamily Plumularioidea and comments on the distribution and depth range of the species are given. The presence of A. lophocarpa in the Bay of Biscay is confirmed. Cladocarpus multiseptatus (Bale, 1915), so far recorded only from the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific is recorded for the first time in Atlantic waters.
