LTD., 399 & 401 GeorgeStreet , Sydney Garden, Orchard, andFarm Memoranda. JANUARY. FLOWER GARDEN .-The seasonable weather of January in Queensland is warm and dry, and compares with July and August in Britain, the temperature in the heat of the day ranging between 80° and 100° Fahr. When rain falls this month it brings muggy heat and develops immense growth in warm weather crops-grass, weeds, etc.- and precaution must be taken to keep the ground clear from all such pests. Roses still may be budded during this month. Now is the time to prepare for making the flower beds gay and attractive during the Autumn and Winter months, sowing annuals for Autumn planting. All kinds of shrubby plants may be propagated by cuttings- thus, pelagoniums, crotons, coleus, and many other kinds of tropical foliage plants can be obtained from cuttings made this month. After putting out cuttings in a propagating frame, shade them with a piece of calico stretched over it. Be careful not to over water at this season. Propagate verbenas-these require rich soil. Layer carnations, picotees and pinks. Re-pot and plant ferns in good bush soil ; they require plenty of moisture, shade, and good drainage, also plenty of light, but not the hot sun. Charcoal is a splendid acquisition to the pot soil for all kinds of ferns. In fact, charcoal has many advantages, and should be always mixed with potting soil when pounded up to powder. 'ORCHARD .-Care must be taken to keep the ground open, forked up, and free from weeds. Keep grape vines tied up so that the wind does not damage the foliage ; remove all suckers and useless growth. Where the fruit on tree hangs too thick, thin them out. Any weeds, grass, etc., can be utilised by placing around the trunk of tree, thus making a good mulch, and when decomposed will be a good fertilizer. VEGETABLE GARDEN .-Though the first month in the calendar (not in the garden), this month is one in which growing vegetables need more attention than planting or sowing. Keep all weed-growth in check by stirring the soil after heavy rain . D-g and leave the ground rough after each crop is removed so that by exposure to sun and air its texture is improved. A few sweet potato vines may still be planted, as they prolong the season, being available when the earlier crop are unfit for table use. In sowing seeds as may be needed for early winter use, select, if possible, a south-west aspect, as the sun's rays are less powerful than on any other aspect. Varieties of cabbage, cauliflower, celery, and French or butter beans may be sown, care being needed with shade and water for such early work. Sow in small beds, over which an old sack or other similar material can be fastened, about a yard from the ground, thus acting as a shade from the sun and breaking the force of heavy rain, each of which is detrimental to the young plants ; or, still better, a light covering of straw or hay, and as the seeds germinate, remove the straw, etc., which will place the young plants in a state to withstand almost any weather, as they have been gently hardened. A dusting with lime is very helpful to keep insee pests in check, or an ounce of tobacco leaf dried, then boiled in one pint of water, the extract being added to three gallons of water, applying same to the plants with a syringe or spray pump about twice a week. THE FARM .-i1aize sown last month will need the scarifier at work to keep the soil free from weeds and to encourage growth. Sowings may still be made of the 90 day varieties of maize, though it is not wise to sow largely so late in the season. This month should be preparatory to work later on, and every inch available should be ploughed and left with a rough and uneven surface. By this means moisture is caused to descend deeper, and thus forms a reserve for future needs, while the surface is prepared by action of sun and air for a good sowing next month. Crops should now be sown with an object in providing winter feed or green manure, and such as 124

THE STATE OF QUEENSLAND.

ON or about the 28th A possession of the country in 11ril, t he name1770, of,KiiiCaptain Ge_orgeHI_. Cook discovered He Botany left Botany Bay, Bay and early took in May following, and, shaping a course northward, othe 17th stood off the promontory now known as Cape Moreton. Doubling the Cape, Captain Cook entered the Bay, which he named in honour of the then president of the Royal Geographical Society, Moreton. Continuing his course northward, Captain Cook explored and named all the principal bays, points, and headlands along the coast. During this voyage, the Endeavour struck a coral reef and narrowly escaped total destruction. Captain Cook beached the vessel for repairs, and chose for this purpose the mouth of a river which he named the Endeavour, on the banks of which is the site of Cooktown. After effecting repairs, Captain Cook sailed for Torres Straits, and there, on Possession Island, formally annexed the whole north-east coast, under the designation of New South Wales. For twenty-nine years after Cook's visit, Moreton Bay remained unvisited by Europeans. But in the year 7 ieutenant Flinders was despatched from Port Jackson in the Norfolk to examine and report upon the coast to the northward of that port, with special instructions to explore any inlets or rivers which might give access, to the contiguous country. On 16th July he dropped anchor in Moreton Bay. The expanse of water he named Glasshouse Bay-[Evidently he entered by the north-west passage.-En.]-from three conical bills that were a distinct landmark from the portion of the bay he chose for anchorage. The following day . ded on Bribie and. The narrow channel between Bribie Island and the mainland, ich a swift current runs at high tide, evidently being mistaken by Flinders for a stream, he name tone River from a quantity of the stone which lay scattered on the beach. The same day e anchored off the mainland, opposite a cliff which he named Redeliffe Point, the present site of one of Brisbane's numerous seaside resorts. Sailing southward, Flinders landed on a small island, about. n, supposed to be St. Helena, now occupied as a penal settlement. Lieutenant Flinders remained in Moreton Bay a. fortnight, and during that period discovered neither inlet nor river, and evidently had not a too favourable impression of the capabilities of the bay. n 18 however, he paid a second visit to the coast of the present State of Queensland, in the Investigator, and explored that portion of the coastline now known as port. finis. A few years later, there being a large surplus of convicts in the Colony, it was. thought desirable that some locality, distant and secure from intrusion, should be found. Port Curtis was thought of, and Mr. Surveyor-General Oxley, towards the close of 1823, was despatched from Port Jackson in .the barque Mermaid to search for such a locality. On arrival at Port Curtis he came to the conclusion, on examination of the surrounding country, that no suitable site was there to be obtained. Mr. Oxley then returned to Moreton Bay, and by a lucky chance encountered two white men, Pam hlet and Finni an, supposed to belong to Sydney. Their story (in brief) rangy thus : ey were tim er-getters ; their craft had been carried out to sea, and drifting northward, was ultimately wrecked on Bribie Island. They had met with kind treat- ment from the blacks. It was easy to pass from the island to the mainland, and in their wanderings they had come upon a broad and deep river. Upon receiving this information, Oxley lost no time in setting out to discover the river. Guided by these two castaways, on De her 2nd, 1823, he was successful, pulled up the stream for several miles, and under t e in uence of first impressions,, wrote a glowing description of the river and its surroundings. In honour of Sir- Thomas Brisbane, then Governor of New South Wales, the river was named the Brisbane. Lockyer and Allan Cunningham followed Oxley at intervals, and partially explored the country watered by the Brisbane River. Oxley Creek was named after the Surveyor- General, and the name Lockyer was given to a large creek which constitutes one of the head waters of the Brisbane. Such, in brief, are the circumstances under which the Brisbane River was discovered, the foundation laid of the city bearing the same name, destined to be the metropolis in the future State of Queensland, a State which will, in the near future, be the principal primary producer of all Australia, the real source on which national wealth is built. Navigating Archive CD Books CDs All Archive CD Books products can be navigated easily using the handy bookmarks on each CD. The table of contents in most original books, and the original book index where it exists, can provide additional ways of finding the information required.

Searching Text on Archive CD Books Australia CDs Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology has been developing over the years as a useful mechanism to convert images (as Archive CD Books pages are) into text which can be searched. The quality of the OCR can still vary, and hence the searchability can vary. Around 95% or 99% of the words in books with good type are searchable—or even higher with very good type. OCR is now a wonderful searching aid in many instances but there is still no substitute for reading the book!

Different Versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Reader 4 or later should be used. Adobe Reader 6 (as it is now named) in fact has considerably better searching options and is recommended. • Acrobat Reader v4 has both a “Find” and a “Search” tool. Those tools are two *totally* different things. Our CDs (that are searchable) work with the *FIND* tool • Acrobat Reader v5 has only a “Find” tool (not a “search” tool). Our CDs (that are searchable) work with the *FIND* tool. • Adobe Reader v6 has only a “Search” tool (not a tool labelled “Find”). HOWEVER — what is called “Search” is the same as the tool that used to be called “Find” Our CDs (that are searchable) work with the *SEARCH* tool

Tips For Searching and Getting More From the CD Books • update to Adobe Reader 6 for more versatile searching options, including the ability to bring up a list of all instances of the word you are searching for — across multiple files on a single CD in a single search request. • enter the MINIMUM number of characters needed to bring up the search results required. • use Adobe Reader 6 to do some trial searches to try to identify the characters that may be misread. These can show up in the extra text in the search results list (Adobe 6 only). A few minutes trial will help you to avoid using characters that are more prone to being misread, e.g. try entering “rederi” if you want “Frederick”, but find that the letters “F” “c” and “k” are sometimes misread. • use the “Match whole word” option to eliminate unnecessary items in your results list, e.g. to eliminate all the blacksmiths and tinsmiths etc when you only want the name Smith. • use the “Match case” option to eliminate all the occupations “smith” if you only want the name “Smith”. • don’t just search for names. Search the book for other names, places and subjects of interest: › look for others of the same name › look for others who lived in the same place or street › who was the postmaster or police officer in the town? › how often and at what time did the coach arrive in town? › what churches were there and what time were services held? › what other activities were there in the community? › look for others who had the same occupation of other interests • all of this and more may be available in a seemingly mundane book such as a directory. You can learn much of the background of life at the time, even if your ancestor is not listed there. • Many CDs have only one file, but some have the book content spread over several files. Adobe Reader normally searches in the file that is open at the time. If you wish to search ALL files at once choose the "All PDF documents in" option and select the CD drive or directory the files are in—Adobe Reader 6 only. ADOBE ACROBAT SEARCHING IS A WONDERFUL FIRST FINDING AID. BUT DO NOT RELY ON IT TO PICK UP ALL THE INFORMATION YOU WANT
