Horary Lessons Anthony Louis I apologize that the following is NOT well-formatted. I did not have time to put it in the same form as the previous entries in this series. Below you will find a collection of all the lessons which I posted on Genie in 1992. Please enjoy them. The charts are best viewed in COURIER font. They will appear distorted in any other font. You may wish to Right-Click with your mouse and choose View source. This will show you this file in WordPad where you can view it in Courier font with all the original formatting preserved. --- Anthony Louis MINI-LESSON #1: WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA? The idea behind horary and electional astrology is that the quality or nature of the time you ask a question or start a new venture will influence its future development and outcome. The best analogy is the weather forecast. If you were traveling to Maine in January, would you pack your bathing suit, suntan lotion, and scuba gear? Assuming there are no weirdoes in the audience, I'd bet most of you would answer "no." The time of year you plan the trip tells you something about its future development. Now, astrology, that is, the horoscope chart for a particular time and place, reflects the nature or quality of the time. There are good times and bad times, rough times and smooth times, peaceful times and stormy times. The chart tells us what the time looks like. In fact, in my view, astrology is simply the study of the qualitative nature of time. Because astrology lets us determine the nature of time, we can use astrology to select a good time to act -- that's what electional astrology is all about: electing the proper time for a venture. Horary is the other side of the coin. Horary analyzes the nature of the time you asked a question. The idea is that you are embedded in the space-time continuum (matrix) so that what you are thinking and doing at a particular time is part and parcel of the space-time matrix of which you are a part. To say it a different way, ASTROLOGY DESCRIBES WHAT I CALL THE TERRAIN OF TIME. If you were setting out on a hike, you would look at a map to see the type of terrain you were about to traverse. Astrology allows you to preview the type of time-terrain you are about to enter. Horary and electional astrology have a data base that spans over two thousand years of astrologers studying such charts and noting the outcome. In that sense, this branch of astrology is an empirical science. Let me end here as far as the theory goes. Next time I'll get into some basic astrological principles for JUDGING such charts. I use the word JUDGE advisedly because you must weigh all the factors and come up with your best guess as to the outcome. This is akin to what a physician does in making a diagnosis. Like physicians, astrologers can make wrong judgments based on their skill and experience. Bye till next time. (c)opyright Anthony Louis, 1992. ------------ LESSON 2: SOME BASIC IDEAS OF HORARY AND ELECTIONAL ASTROLOGY. NORTH It helps to know some basics about astrology. I will assume the reader knows very little. The chart reflects the planets' positions in space as they are projected on the Ecliptic, the apparent path of the sun in space. The point at which the horizon crosses the ecliptic in the East is called the Ascendant. In this chart 5 LEO 23' was the point on the ecliptic which was rising when I started these lessons. The point at which the horizon crosses the ecliptic in the West is called the Descendant. You will note that the chart looks upside-down and backwards from a typical map (in which East in on the right and South is on the bottom). There are a couple reasons for drawing the horo- scope this way. First, it mimics the shadow of the sun on the sundial. Second, when astrologers actually looked at the sky in ancient times, they faced south so that east was to the left, west was to the right, and north was behind them. The Ascendant carries with it the symbolism of sunrise, the beginning of a new day. Thus, the Ascendant always symbolizes the beginning or initiation of any action or question. The Ascendant signifies the person who asks the question or starts the venture. The Ascendant symbolizes the baby which has just emerged from the womb. The Ascendant is also called the CUSP of the 1st house. In horary and electional work, the following four factors can and do signify the person asking the question (the QUERENT) or the person initiating the action: 1. The Ascendant or cusp of the first house. 2. The planet which rules the rising sign. 3. Any planets posited in the 1st house. 4. The Moon always co-rules the querent. Most commonly the planet ruling the Ascending sign is the chief significator of the querent. But, if a planet in the first better describes the querent, then that planet is a better choice for the primary significator. Except when Cancer rises (ruled by the Moon), the Moon is a secondary significator and carries less weight that the planet ruling the Ascendant. In this chart, I am represented by the 5 Leo 23 cusp and by the sun which rules Leo. There are no planets in the 1st house. The Moon co-rules me. THE BASIC PRINCIPLE IN HORARY AND ELECTIONAL WORK IS TO IDENTIFY THE PLANET OR PLANETS SIGNIFYING YOU AND THE PLANET OR PLANETS SIGNIFYING THE MATTER ASKED ABOUT AND TO SEE HOW THEY RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER IN THE CHART. IF THEY RELATE WELL, THE MATTER WILL GO SMOOTHLY. IF THEY RELATE BADLY, WELL THEM'S THE BREAKS. To do this, you must know what each planet and what each house represents. I'll say more about rulerships in the next lesson. In this example, you should know that the 3rd and 9th houses have to do with teaching and communication. In this example, Virgo rules the 3rd cusp so Mercury is the signifier of the 3rd. Pisces rules the 9th cusp so Jupiter is the signifier of the 9th. In addition, the Moon occupies the 9th and becomes a co-signifier of the 9th. Mercury intrinsically rules teaching and communications. The Moon intrinsically rules The People. Note how the Moon (my co-ruler and natural ruler of the people) will sextile (60 degrees) both Mercury (3-ruler) and sun (1-ruler). The sextile is a harmonious aspect and shows the significant planets relating well to one another. Hence, these lessons should be reasonably successful. Time will tell. There are 12 houses in the chart. The houses are a way of cutting the circular pie. I used Regiomontanus houses here because they are the houses traditionally used by horary astrologers. Regiomontanus cut the equator into twelve equal pieces and projected those pieces of the equator onto the ecliptic (which is angled at about 23.5 degrees from the equator). There are many other ways to slice the pie. Stay tuned for Lesson 3: The houses and planets, and what they rule. (c)opyright Anthony Louis, 1992. ------------ LESSON 3: Houses and Planets in Horary/Electional Astrology There are twelve houses around the wheel. Each house sym- bolizes a different area of experiences. It helps to think of the 12 houses as six pairs of related houses. The houses below the horizon (1,2,3,4,5,6) have to do with personal matters. The other six houses (7,8,9,10,11,12) have more to do with other people and with public matters. The FIRST house represents the QUERENT (person asking the question or initiating the action). The 1st house stands for the querent's body, state of health, appearance, current location. ARIES (ruled by Mars) is the 1st sign of the zodiac. Mars is the initiator, the warrior, the daring young man. The SEVENTH house (opposite) the 1st stands for those who are on equal footing with the querent: partners, spouse, mate, open enemies, opponents, significant other people, and strangers unrelated to the querent. Because the 7th is opposite the 1st, it represents opposition such as lawsuits, but also contracts and legal or binding agreements. If the querent is planning to re- locate, the 7th signifies the place he or she would move to. LIBRA (ruled by Venus) is the 7th sign of the zodiac. Venus is the peacemaker, the conciliator, the goddess of love.

SCIENCE IN POETIC CONTEXTS: ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY IN THE HEBREW POETRY OF SEPHARAD* Ciencia en un contexto poético: Astronomía y astrología en la poesía hebrea de Sefarad JOSEFINA RODRÍGUEZ-ARRIBAS The Warburg Institute, University of London BIBLID [1696-585X (2010) 59; 167-202] Resumen: Este artículo es una primera aproximación a la presencia del conocimiento astronómico-astrológico en un considerable número de poemas escritos por judíos de Sefarad o asimilados a dicha tradición (ss. XI-XV). Abstract: This article is a preliminary overview of the presence of astronomical-astrological knowledge in a considerable number of poems written by Jews in Sepharad or rooted in the Sephardic tradition (11th-15th c.). Scientific knowledge, notably astronomical and astrological concepts, played an important role in the curriculum of medieval Muslims and Jews, as did poetry. However, the transmission of scientific knowledge in poetic form took place not only in Arabic, but also in Greek and Latin (didactic poetry).

  • The Differences Between Western & Vedic Astrology Dr Anil Kumar Porwal
The Differences between Western & Vedic Astrology Dr Anil Kumar Porwal Zodiac The most foundational difference between Western and Vedic astrology is each system's choice of Zodiac. Western astrologers use the Tropical Zodiac, where the beginnings of the twelve signs are determined by the Sun's apparent orbit around the Earth, i.e. the onset of the four seasons, i.e. when the Sun crosses the Equator (going North at Spring which defines Aries and South in the Fall indicating the beginning of Libra) and its uppermost and lowest points (the Summer and Winter Solstices). Vedic astrologers, on the other hand, use the Sidereal Zodiac, which is based upon the physical positions of the constellations in the sky. They choose a starting point (most commonly the place in the sky opposite to Spica) for the beginning of Aries, and proceed in equal 30 degree segments for subsequent signs. While planets in signs are used extensively in Western astrology as the major definer of the expression of a planet, Vedic astrology uses signs differently, and reviewed in my article The Vedic Signs at: http://www.learnastrologyfree.com/vedicsigns.htm House System In addition, most modern Western astrologers use one of the many house systems that places the degree of the Ascendant as the beginning of the First House, with either unequally- or equally-sized houses. Vedic astrologers, by and large, use Whole Sign Houses, where the Ascendant can fall anywhere in the First House, and each house comprises all of one sign. Many also use Bhava/Shri Pati houses for a portion of their work.

From ancient times up to the seventeenth century Electional Astrology in common with all the other branches of the subject received a good deal of attention, and it is a matter for surprise that it has not shared in the present revival of interest in Astrology, considering the extreme popularity and usefulness of the matters with which it deals.

  • Horary Astrology the Heart of the Question
Horary Astrology The Heart of the question Copyright Clélia Romano, DMA Evidence point out to the fact that Horary Astrology only began to be practiced in the West some centuries after Natal astrology: perhaps in the 4th century. Many scholars believe that Horary is as old as Natal astrology based on some evidences supported especially by book 5 of Dorotheus of Sidon (75 AC), Carmem Astrologicum or Pentatheuc, one of the first works on Hellenistic astrology which survived almost preserved since our days. But if we think that Dorotheus wrote in Greek, was translated into Pahlavi (Persian) and from the Pahlavi into Arabic and then into English, and besides this Dorotheus wrote this work in verses, a fact that is a limitation to didactic transmission, we realize that many things must have been corrupted on the road. Although there are apparent indications of the use of Electional astrology in Dorotheus´ book, that were cited at length by the astrologer Hephaiste of Thebes, in the fifth century, intense revisions made in the nineties pointed out to several interpolations especially in the fifth book of the Pentateuch, which overthrew the hypothesis that Dorotheus was referring to Horary astrology. It happens that authors of the 8th and 9th century, as Sahal and Masha´allah transformed the texts of Electional astrology into Horary astrology. Quite interesting is the fact that, according to the vast article by Chris Brenani, Pingree, who translated the Pentateuch in 1976 and also Hephaiste, also translated from the Sanskrit, at the same time, the important work called Indian Yavanajātaka or “the Greeks Horoscope” It is an astrological text that was written in Sanskrit verse, in 269/270 AD and originally translated from Greek and written by some Yavaneśvara or "Lord of the Greeks" in DC 149/150.

GVIDONIS BONATI ON THE ARABIC PARTS translated from the original Latin text by: b Robert Zoller. www.new-library.com/zoller © Copyright 2000 New Library Limited All rights reserved BONATTI ON THE ARABIC PARTS Copyright © 1980, revised 2000 by Robert Zoller All Rights Reserved INTRODUCTION TO TRANSLATION The following is an extract of the work of Guido Bonatti translated from Latin into English from Guidonis Bonati Forliviensis Mathematici de Astronomia Tractatus X universum quod iudiciariam rationem nativitatum, aeris tempestatum attinet, comprehendentes. Adiectus est Cl. Ptolemaei liber Fructus, cum utilissimis Georgii Trapezuntii Published in 1550, Basel. The translation is of the second part of Bonatti’s treatment of Revolutions of the Year of the World, which is the fourth part of the work and covers columns 626 – 664. The work seems to have been written for delivery as a series of lecturers. This gives it a rather disjointed continuum and requires careful reading. Special attention should be given to the beginning where Bonatti intermeshes Albumassar’s view with his own. This is again done with Alchabitius at the end. Minimal editing and standardising of the English has been undertaken so as to allow the thinking and practice of the medieval astrologer to shine through the translation. The work examines the ancient doctrine of Arabic parts. For a proper understanding of them the reader should have a working knowledge of natal chart erection and interpretation as well as a basic knowledge of horary and electional astrology. Greater detail on these areas and a fuller understanding of the parts as well as other important aspects such as profections and the revolutions of the nativities is to be found in the [Foundation Course on Medieval Astrology] (for the beginner) and the [Diploma Course on Medieval Astrology] as well as in other materials found on this website [Tools and Techniques].

For the purposes of this publication there have been considerable revision and enlargement. First of all there have been some discoveries. In the original articles I stated that there was only one unambiguous reference to anything other than the system of houses presented here, and that was in the writings of Julius Firmicus Maternus (see page 14). According to the existing translation he appears to have used the Equal House system. Since then I have consulted the original Latin in which it appears that his use of equal houses is not as clearly established as I had previously thought.

Th is article provides a general overwiew of the issue, investigates the relations between astronomers /astrologers or humanists, the related primary sources and branches of astrology pursued at the court, and analyses some exemplary horoscopes. Th e investigation is based on a great variety of sources (including literary and visual artworks): poems for the king, chronicles, various horoscopes and iudicia. Th e most popular branches of astrology seem to be natal and catarchic astrology. Astrology was applied for various purposes: to forecast one’s fortune in general, to forecast political and military events, to support institute foundations. Royal patronage and political propaganda played a great role in the importance of this discipline. Even taking into account the popularity of astrology in Europe, the king’s personal predi- lection for the stars seems to have been remarkably strong.
