SCIENCE IN POETIC CONTEXTS: ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY IN THE HEBREW POETRY OF SEPHARAD* Ciencia en un contexto poético: Astronomía y astrología en la poesía hebrea de Sefarad JOSEFINA RODRÍGUEZ-ARRIBAS The Warburg Institute, University of London BIBLID [1696-585X (2010) 59; 167-202] Resumen: Este artículo es una primera aproximación a la presencia del conocimiento astronómico-astrológico en un considerable número de poemas escritos por judíos de Sefarad o asimilados a dicha tradición (ss. XI-XV). Abstract: This article is a preliminary overview of the presence of astronomical-astrological knowledge in a considerable number of poems written by Jews in Sepharad or rooted in the Sephardic tradition (11th-15th c.). Scientific knowledge, notably astronomical and astrological concepts, played an important role in the curriculum of medieval Muslims and Jews, as did poetry. However, the transmission of scientific knowledge in poetic form took place not only in Arabic, but also in Greek and Latin (didactic poetry).

I apologize that the following is NOT well-formatted. I did not have time to put it in the same form as the previous entries in this series. Below you will find a collection of all the lessons which I posted on Genie in 1992. Please enjoy them. The charts are best viewed in COURIER font. They will appear distorted in any other font. You may wish to Right-Click with your mouse and choose View source. This will show you this file in WordPad where you can view it in Courier font with all the original formatting preserved. --- Anthony Louis MINI-LESSON #1: WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA? The idea behind horary and electional astrology is that the quality or nature of the time you ask a question or start a new venture will influence its future development and outcome. The best analogy is the weather forecast. If you were traveling to Maine in January, would you pack your bathing suit, suntan lotion, and scuba gear? Assuming there are no weirdoes in the audience, I'd bet most of you would answer "no." The time of year you plan the trip tells you something about its future development. Now, astrology, that is, the horoscope chart for a particular time and place, reflects the nature or quality of the time. There are good times and bad times, rough times and smooth times, peaceful times and stormy times. The chart tells us what the time looks like. In fact, in my view, astrology is simply the study of the qualitative nature of time.

Strategies of Defending Astrology: A Continuing Tradition by Teri Gee A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology University of Toronto © Copyright by Teri Gee (2012) Strategies of Defending Astrology: A Continuing Tradition Teri Gee Doctorate of Philosophy Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology University of Toronto 2012 Abstract Astrology is a science which has had an uncertain status throughout its history, from its beginnings in Greco-Roman Antiquity to the medieval Islamic world and Christian Europe which led to frequent debates about its validity and what kind of a place it should have, if any, in various cultures. Written in the second century A.D., Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos is not the earliest surviving text on astrology. However, the complex defense given in the Tetrabiblos will be treated as an important starting point because it changed the way astrology would be justified in Christian and Muslim works and the influence Ptolemy’s presentation had on later works represents a continuation of the method introduced in the Tetrabiblos. Abû Ma‘shar’s Kitâb al- Madkhal al-kabîr ilâ ‘ilm ahk. âm al-nujûm, written in the ninth century, was the most thorough surviving defense from the Islamic world. Roger Bacon’s Opus maius, although not focused solely on advocating astrology, nevertheless, does contain a significant defense which has definite links to the works of both Abû Ma‘shar and Ptolemy. As such, he demonstrates another stage in the development of astrology.

Thus, the Greek god of interpretive communication was combined with the Egyptian god of wisdom as a patron of astrology and alchemy. In addition, both gods were psychopomps, guiding souls to the afterlife. The Egyptian Priest and Polymath Imhotep had been deified long after his death and therefore assimilated to Thoth in the classical and Hellenistic period.

  • Geminos and Babylonian Astronomy
Geminos and Babylonian astronomy J. M. Steele Introduction Geminos’ Introduction to the Phenomena is one of several introductions to astronomy written by Greek and Latin authors during the last couple of centuries bc and the first few centuries ad.1 Geminos’ work is unusual, however, in including some fairly detailed—and accurate—technical information about Babylonian astronomy, some of which is explicitly attributed to the “Chal- deans.” Indeed, before the rediscovery of cuneiform sources in the nineteenth century, Gem- inos provided the most detailed information on Babylonian astronomy available, aside from the reports of several eclipse and planetary observations quoted by Ptolemy in the Almagest. Early-modern histories of astronomy, those that did not simply quote fantastical accounts of pre-Greek astronomy based upon the Bible and Josephus, relied heavily upon Geminos for their discussion of Babylonian (or “Chaldean”) astronomy.2 What can be learnt of Babylonian astron- omy from Geminos is, of course, extremely limited and restricted to those topics which have a place in an introduction to astronomy as this discipline was understood in the Greek world. Thus, aspects of Babylonian astronomy which relate to the celestial sphere (e.g. the zodiac and the ris- ing times of the ecliptic), the luni-solar calendar (e.g. intercalation and the 19-year (“Metonic”) cycle), and lunar motion, are included, but Geminos tells us nothing about Babylonian planetary theory (the planets are only touched upon briefly by Geminos), predictive astronomy that uses planetary and lunar periods, observational astronomy, or the problem of lunar visibility, which formed major parts of Babylonian astronomical practice.

  • A Mini-Course in Astrology Deciphering Your Horoscope Wheel
A Mini-Course in Astrology If you want to know more about astrology, here is a brief outline of how horoscopes work, concise meanings of each part of the horoscope and, scattered throughout, tips on how to put these parts together. Deciphering Your Horoscope Wheel The horoscope wheel is a complete, accurately calculated chart such as a professional astrologer would draw up. This wheel is actually a diagram showing how the planets and signs were arranged around you at the moment of your birth. Think of yourself, just being born, as being at the center. The two horizontal spokes are the horizon of the place where you were born. Above this line are the planets that were up in the sky. Below it are the planets that were hidden below the horizon. The sky is shown as if you were facing south. As the Earth turns on its axis each day, the Sun would rise to your left in the east, culminate or reach its highest point around noon, set to your right, and anticulminate or reach its lowest point about midnight before rising the next day. Were you born during the day or at night? If you look at your own horoscope wheel, you should see your Sun (q) either above or below the horizon, reflecting the time of day when you were born. The diagram above shows approximately where the Sun would be at various times during a 24-hour period. The planets, too, make this entire trip clockwise around the horoscope wheel each day, but each rises and sets at a different time.
