Jack Halberstam Currents: Feminist Key Concepts and Controversies Trigger Happy: From Content Warning to Censorship rigger warnings have become standard fare on some college campuses T over the past few years. But they have also been the occasion for in- tense debates about pedagogy, classroom conduct, the use of me- dia in the classroom, and the nature of trauma. In general terms, a trigger warning is a cautionary note that may be added to syllabi or online sites to alert readers, students, or casual browsers about violent or sexually ex- plicit images and text in the materials on a site, in a course reader, or up ahead in a blind chain of Internet clicks. The trigger warning could easily be read simply as a protocol proper to new media forms in the early twenty-first century. However, because the call for trigger warnings on col- lege campuses coincided with new sets of regulations around sexual inter- actions, sexual assault, and teacher-student relationships, they have instead become a site for dynamic and often polemical debates about censorship, exposure, sensitivity, and the politics of discomfort. In this short piece I want to explore the function of the trigger warning and the import of the debates to which it gave rise. I will begin with two examples of college campuses where students in- troduced requests for classroom policy changes around syllabi and trigger warnings. In the first example, in 2012 Oberlin College, a small liberal arts school in Ohio known for its eclectic students and social justice agendas, circulated an online guide intended to help professors to avoid assigning and presenting potentially “triggering” material in their classrooms.1 As numer- ous articles commented, most professors in 2012 had never heard of trig- ger warnings, let alone Tumblr sites (where trigger warnings were popular- ized and proliferated), and were not opposed to them so much as ignorant of their purpose. -

Johnston NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, USA INTRODUCTION People's ability (or inability) to do different activities or tasks at the same time is a topic of much interest not only to psychologists, but also to the proverbial "person in the street". It is natural to wonder about what we as human beings can and cannot do. An understanding of our limitations should also have practical value, because the intelligent design of human/machine systems depends as much on knowing the capabilities of people as it does on knowing the capabilities of machines. Human performance limits have played an important role in catastrophes that have occurred in aviation and other fields; a better understanding of those limits might help in designing systems and procedures that can minimize the frequency of such disasters. Simultaneous performance of different tasks is intellectually intriguing as well. The limitations on simultaneous cognition may provide important clues to the architecture of the human mind. The notion that dual-task performance limitations have implications about the "unity of the mind" occurred to people long before the present era of information-processing psychology. In the late nineteenth century, for example, the educated public was fascinated with a phenomenon called "automatic writing", in which People were claimed to be able to write prose while carrying out other tasks (see Koutstaal, 1992). Abrams * INTRODUCTION This article invites feminists to leverage the #MeToo Movement as a critical analytical tool to explore the longevity of the enduring rape crisis framing of victim services. Long before the #MeToo Movement, victim services in communities nationwide were framed around a crisis model. For nearly half a century, victims have visited rape crisis centers, called rape crisis hotlines, and mo- bilized rape crisis response teams to provide services and support. This enduring political and social framing around rape as a crisis is opaque,1 has prompted a political backlash,2 and risks distorting hard-fought feminist legal, social, and political battles.3 It has yielded underreporting, underutilization, and recurring risks of budgetary cuts. If you have a cocktail shaker, shake with some ice and pour into a glass. Then add the sparkling wine. My Mother’s Idea of a French 75 Everyone needs a little liquid strength for a visit with Mom 2 oz Champagne ½ oz lemon juice 1 oz gin 2 dashes simple syrup Combine gin, syrup, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into an iced champagne glass. Top up with Champagne. Stir gently. Garnish with lemon peel. An explanation is the Photo Story activity for _which photographs are supplied that cannot be reproduced, however, pictures can be clipped from magazines as a replacement. -

ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling.
